Eastenders Baby Death Storyline

Once again, no one can live happily ever after Sad

Ronnie's baby James, dies and she puts his body in Kat and Alfies son's crib, and steals their baby boy, Tommy.

Why oh why oh why do scriptwriters insist on portraying bereaved parents - mothers especially - as mad and deranged??? Maybe it's because they can't begin to imagine how awful the death of a child is, but really, whilst we are mad with grief, it is our own child that we want back, not someone else's stolen child. When are scriptwriters ever going to understand that?

Still, it'll be a riveting watch, no doubt.

Sorry that was a link to a story on the BBC about the number if complaints.

3400 apparently.

Mouseface · 04/01/2011 17:38

Does this work?

jugglingjo · 04/01/2011 17:52

Hi mouse,

Thanks

Does anyone else feel it's at least good to see the MN solidarity around this ?

  • And that of the other 3000 or so complainants
Mouseface · 04/01/2011 18:05

Hey juggling

I think it's bloody brilliant that MNers are in agreement that it's the baby swap story that we have are finding so insensitive and farcical, not the SIDS part.

Although that in itself wasn't done so great IMO.

gregssausageroll · 04/01/2011 19:56

And the midwife just sweeps the club foot under the carpet. FFS.

Mouseface · 04/01/2011 20:03

TURN IT OFF gregs, don't put yourself through it.

me23 · 04/01/2011 20:03

plus the mw leaves the baby at home when it has lost 20% of birthweight that is a substantial amount baby would be sent straight to hospital for an assessment with a paediatrician.

drysocks · 04/01/2011 20:45

I have to go with the people that say it's just a soap. It's not real and you shouldn't be flaffing about these ridiculous story lines.

I dont like EE generally but do know the happenings. I think the issue here is with Ronnie and her wierd behaviours (which get wierder and wierder in her life).

The issue is that she has real mental health issues. Just look at her history. She seriously needs help and not as a mother/sister/daughter (Archie) or partner BUT as herself. Something's not right in her head.

drysocks

Why are you concerned for 'Ronnie's' mental health if this just 'a soap'?

Mouseface · 04/01/2011 20:57

'is' Blush

Glitterknickaz · 04/01/2011 20:59

Yay my 14 year old niece has just stated her disgust on her FB status

thefirstMrsDeVere · 04/01/2011 21:08

Its just a soap and we should stop flaffing about ...

But you write a concise mental health history of a fictional character and assert that she seriously needs help.

Hmm

Remind me... who is taking this all a little to seriously?

drysocks · 04/01/2011 21:29

I understand where most of you are coming from but i still think the whole complaints thing should'nt be centred on this one baby- swapping storyline.

I'm not overly concerned about R but I keep hearing about it everywhere i go and it's getting a little annoying. It's clear she has serious issues. Dont know of anyone in RL who'd go to such extremes.

Having said that it's still not real. Just wish pple could look at it from mental health angle at least. Perhaps then it will make a little bit of sense.
That's my opinion anyway.

We heard you the first time drysocks Grin

HereMeRoar · 04/01/2011 21:43

Why does several trauma's in someone's life = mental health issues = therefore understandable they become a babysnatcher?

This logic manages to insult and negatively stereotype more vulnerable groups than just those affected by the death of a baby Angry. See earlier posts from someone else on "damaged goods"

It is patronising poorly thought through justification by the BBC. Or alternatively a pile of wank.

HereMeRoar · 04/01/2011 21:47

"It's clear she has serious issues. Dont know of anyone in RL who'd go to such extremes."

Exactly Wink. So now as a viewer you're saying she must have mental health issues because she snatched a baby, rather than saying this storyline would just not happen. People will make that jump, and then the implication easily becomes that mothers with mental health problems should be viewed with suspicion Sad. This just gets better and better...

Sorry SAF, I should have looked back and quoted you properly Blush. Lazy, moi? Wink

Mouseface · 04/01/2011 22:20

' so this is being written as a pure response to grief not a point on a mental health decline or part of an ongoing condition. '

Exactly! All of a sudden 'Ronnie' goes nuts. Yes, she's suffered in the past. When her daughter died, she didn't snatch another child, when she miscarried recently, she didn't snatch a baby.

Why now? Because this was the last straw?

People go through hell and back each and every day coping with death, illness, accidents, worrying about putting a roof over their heads, feeding and clothing their children, simply surviving.

They don't go off the rails. People don't rob banks to feed their kids. The don't snatch a man if there father dies.

It's just so far fetched and wrong to suggest that because 'Ronnie' has had shit in her life, she is as mad as a bastard and would snatch a baby.

Yes, she realised what she did but didn't actually do anything about it when confronted with her husbands' arrival home.

She lied.

Why is she being beaten with such a shitty stick by the writers?

And yes, I know it's not real but the protrayal of a bereaved parent is way off base.

HereMeRoar · 04/01/2011 22:23

Mouse Sad. Hope you're OK (hug).

HereMeRoar · 04/01/2011 22:25

Changing tack slightly here... I'm not on FB, but is there not an official FB EE fanpage like for everything else in the universe? Is anyone writing comments on that (BBC or unhappy fans)?

Mouseface · 04/01/2011 22:34

Thank you HMR - I'm going to take myself off to bed before I carry on ranting in circles.

Night all xx
