There were 14 children when this started & my friend & I can only remember 13 - who's missing ?

Friend thinks Neil had a pal with blonde hair, but we can't remember anything about him...any clues ?

And...who's your fave & why ?

You're welcome Scummy, I was aware of being judgemental and crap myself

Jools, so where is he? Footage looked Eastern Cumbria to me...or possibly Coniston?
I think having two small children played a significant part in Bruce's volte-face. At least he is still teaching and happy in his personal life I guess, but I felt obscurely let down by his new direction too...

JoolsToo · 23/09/2005 15:04

look under EDEN gosh - he almost did it!

Marina · 23/09/2005 15:05

Better luck next time Neil.

Agree with not quite liking Bruce as much as I felt I ought to.

Also liked Nick as well. He seemed pretty sorted and likeable, I thought.

I've followed this series all the way through - I find it particularly poignant as these people are my exact peers - and I always enjoy seeing what an old-fashioned black and white world I was born into

I felt that Lynn had the most important job of all and the lack of funding for her made me

I found Nick to be the most fascinating because he came from a farm in the Yorkshire Dales and went to Oxford and seemed to be a total academic (even his 2 wives were university lecturers) - that just fascinates me because both sets of my grandparents were farmers and he seems to have done in 1 generation what took my family 2 generations to achieve.

Didn't you just keep marvelling at how beautiful the children were, and how life dulls you down. I sat there thinking how can I help my children to remain vivid and alive like this. Maybe it's impossible.
I think I'm happier than those people, but maybe my life would seem awfully dreary on television.
I was really pleased Bruce had children, and could excuse his being totally worn out.

ScummyMummy · 23/09/2005 19:00

Yes, aloha. I definitely thought it was really noticeable how little joie de vivre this group of people had as adults. Do people think that's just typical of adults as compared to children? I definitely don't think that most of my friends are that unhappy. Hope not anyway.

I thought the one who visits Bulgaria was pretty happy - he seemed like the prince of Ruritania

ScummyMummy · 23/09/2005 19:22

Yes- he seemed happy enough, Cam, though a tad annoying in his princeliness!

Cam · 23/09/2005 19:25

Yes I kept expecting him to get geared up in a pseudo military outfit with medals and a hat with a big feather in it

moondog · 24/09/2005 13:09

lol at your comments on that strange Eastern European one, cam!
He seemed a nice enough bloke but God,so unattractive as a personality!

I don't think Bruce had sold out. I reckon that one can only give so much in terms of philanthropy. It does grind you down and far better to give it a good shot then retire from the field than to spend years and years getting bitter and disillusioned and therefore less effective.

Cam · 25/09/2005 14:36

Yes, moondog.

Like I said earlier these people are my peer group and I can't relate to any of them, what a strange bunch of people 49-ers are

unicorn · 25/09/2005 15:00

Just caught up with this (so apologies if I repeat)
Thought Neil's 'life' has been the most fascinating and honest to watch.

I wonder what happened that changed him from that beatiful/innocent/full of life 7 year old - to an emotionaly fragile/'damaged' person.

I'm glad he seems more 'together' now - and hope he goes from strength to strength (I reckon he should write a book on the basis on this programme - everyone is fascinated by him)

Great programme.
