What did you think about that scene??

I found it really disturbing and hid behind DP's back till it was over. I cant decide if it was just too 'real'.

Do you think that scene was unneccessary/offensive??

On a more general note I (as a huge SM fan) thought the first 2 episodes were pretty shit but thought tonight's was much better and much more in keeping with the gritty realism of the film.

I'm thrilled that Combo is back and clearly he's going to bring a few storylines to a head in what I can only guess will be a fairly explosive manner.

And obv I meant last nights. We missed it and watched it On Demand.

I reckon Combo is going to sort out Lols dad. Didn't she say last week that she had only told Milky and Combo and that Combo had already been to confront the dad but he had knocked him out?

I think it's fab, definitely got darker this week. That scene was very disturbing, but I feel it kept in theme of how SM is, IYSWIM.

And I have a small crush on Woody (and Lol!)

Isn't it the final one last week?

LastOrdersAgain · 22/09/2010 00:04

next week Hmm

stainesmassif · 22/09/2010 00:51

Last night's is the first I've seen. I thought it was brilliant but now I don't want to go to sleep. Paddy considine is such a good actor. That scene was v disturbing and so inevitable.

Dione · 22/09/2010 00:57

Scene was really disturbing and brought back memories. Horrible horrible horrible. But not unneccessary or offensive. Just realistic and horrible.

kylesmybaby · 22/09/2010 01:05

have been watching it but dont know the characters too well. who was the girl - she wasn't his daughter was she - was she his daughters friend. thanks

LastOrdersAgain · 22/09/2010 01:08

yes, Kellys best friend.

katkouta · 22/09/2010 07:46

It was upsetting, but agree it was much more like Shane meadows than the 1st two.
Did I miss something? I dont recall Paddy Considine in it? Confused

I hope Combo sorts out Lol's Dad, if not I will Grin

BelfastBloke · 22/09/2010 07:54

I believe Shane Meadows directed last night's programme, whereas he only wrote the last two but someone else directed. I could be wrong.

BelfastBloke · 22/09/2010 07:57

Yeah I was right about the first two, directed by Tom Harper. Maybe Shane Meadows directed the programmes which were most attuned to his style and sensibilities.

BunnyLebowski · 22/09/2010 08:37

staines Paddy Considine isn't in it??

Lol's dad is played by Johnny Harris who I mistook for one of my favourite actors Eddie Marsan when I saw the initial trailer. Phew confusing much? Grin.

BelfastBloke You're right. Episodes 1 & were directed by Tom Harper who worked on Skins (and boy did it show). Episodes 3 & 4 by Shane Meadows. It has restored my faith in him.

Thats interesting BelfastBloke, it also makes sense now too.

jennieflower · 22/09/2010 09:24

Last nights episode started out so well, the music was fab, especially English Rose by the Jam. The scene at the end was easily one of the most uncomfortable moments I've ever seen on TV. I went to bed feeling pretty awful about it and still can't stop thinking about it today.

stainesmassif · 22/09/2010 10:52

Do you know - I thought 'how did paddy get such a convincing bald patch'..... I stand by my comment that he's an excellent actor , tho I accept it may not be relevant to this thread now. What can I say? I'm 29 weeks pregnant??

Seriously though, I'm still disturbed by that scene. Too believable.

ArcticRoll · 22/09/2010 11:39

Brilliant and disturbing.
The acting is fantastic and so natural.
Love the look of it as well-captures the eighties but in a subtle not obvious way.
Demonstrates that it is possible for UK tv drama to match US drama.

LouMacca · 22/09/2010 13:41

Absolutely brilliant series and the best thing on TV for a long time.

Like a couple of you have already said I found that scene so disturbing. I can't stop thinking about it and it made me feel awful watching it. I know you can't put yourself in that position unless you've been there but I felt the fear of the girl through the TV screen and it really affected me.

PinkChick · 22/09/2010 13:47

i think the lengh and grafic portrayal of that particular scenne was unnecesary and sick, even more so when the sound of what was happening was dubbed OVEr the other scenes..VILE Angry

wintera · 22/09/2010 23:29

Just watched it now on catch up. Although I thought it was horrible obviously, there is a part of me that thinks any rape scene has to the very worst it can be, to get across what a terrible thing it is. However, I think maybe the scenes showing the guy's arse could have been substituted with close ups of the girl's face instead to get across the full horror of what was happening to her.

Rape is always going to be a very tricky subject for a tv show or film to capture, and on the whole I think they did a good job of showing what an awful thing it is to happen to someone.

I thought last night's episode was much better than the others, and I only wish that Shane Meadows had directed all the episodes himself instead of letting someone else direct the first 2 eps!

BelfastBloke · 23/09/2010 07:01

WINTERA: "there is a part of me that thinks any rape scene has to the very worst it can be, to get across what a terrible thing it is."

That's sort of what I thought about it, too. As someone earlier in the thread said, realistic and horrible but not unnecessary. THe realism being the point.

But then I started to wonder how well that sits with other sequences, which are clearly NOT realistic. Like the fight with the scooter casuals, which has almost Benny Hill-like music over the top of it, and almost no-one getting seriously hurt.

I suppose the explanation for that is that when you look back upon your adolescence (as Shane Meadows is here), some of it is in a rosy glow (Woody and Milky loved the fight) and some of it is grimly horrible.

4andnotout · 23/09/2010 07:16

Oh no I missed it! I've really enjoyed the series although I never saw the film. Where can I watch it online?

BelfastBloke · 23/09/2010 07:19

Channel "4 On Demand", I'd have thought?

Do try to see the film, although I doubt it's a prerequisite for the series.

Having said that, I suspect the return of Combo in the 4th episode might mean the storyline next week draws more on the film.

AnyFucker · 23/09/2010 07:33

I had to turn the tv channel over

I am usually a brave soul, but it was too realistic for me...when the girl tentatively caressed his face in an effort to touch his humanity to make him stop, I burst into tears

I haven't been able to get it out of my mind since Sad

There seem to be very few programmes that do not have rape in. In the Bill, Doctors, Eastenders etc etc and shown graphically in films at the cinema which have usually only have a 15 certificate. Maybe because the makers of these programmes and films think that people like to watch rape. So much pornography also includes rape scenes. So I guess it is good to show how horrific rape really is, and not something for our entertainment.

PinkChick · 23/09/2010 21:17

people KNOW whether first hand or not that rape is horrific!..we dont need to see two people acting it out as grafic as that!, for that lengh of time..as said earlier, why try to be so 'real' in this scene when the majority of it is comical and 'unreal'?
