What did you think about that scene??

I found it really disturbing and hid behind DP's back till it was over. I cant decide if it was just too 'real'.

Do you think that scene was unneccessary/offensive??

On a more general note I (as a huge SM fan) thought the first 2 episodes were pretty shit but thought tonight's was much better and much more in keeping with the gritty realism of the film.

I'm thrilled that Combo is back and clearly he's going to bring a few storylines to a head in what I can only guess will be a fairly explosive manner.

I thought the portrayal was brilliantly real. What was graphic was not the rape but the response of the victim. The conflict, the shock, the response and the feeling of helplessness. I do not believe that it should have been portrayed in a more comic or unreal way. Why do that when we live in a society where less than 5% of rape results in a conviction?

I'm glad it wasn't just me that found that scene so disturbing, I couldn't sleep after watching it and keep thinking about it too.

Really horrific. I want to watch it next week just to saee something horrible happen to Lols dad.

I know what you mean PinkChick, but also I was thinking about the scene and the fact that I do think a lot of people still view rape as something that happens by strangers to women, often late at night outside. I know this isn't true and that scene showed this.

On a lighter note, I too thought it was Paddy Condisine and wondered about his bald patch!

I take your point PinkChick, but I still think the scene was remarkably well done. My problem with most rape scenes in tv or films is that they end up being titillating in some way. In no way could that scene ever be described as titillating. It was raw from start to finish, which is exactly as it should be.

As for your point about some of the scenes being comedic and over the top, well that's a good point, but Shane Meadows always works in that way. And the film of This Is England was a prime example of this. It's his trademark style if you like. The comedic elements making the violent scenes even more shocking.

I watched it last night and hardly slept. Very hard to see.

Yes that scene was very realistic and brought back many bad memories for me.

I was raped 23 years ago by a friend of a friend and the experience has by now been pretty much pushed to the back of my mind and I would say I came to terms with it some time ago.

but that scene I found very disturbing because it was so realistic.

What is so sick about itand made it so much worse is the fact that if the person is known to you they trade on that relationship and take you completely by surprise.

I was watching through fingers and grimacing. Very uncomfortable.

Sincitylover - So sorry to hear that this has happened to you! I can't imagine how you must have felt watching that scene.
