my dh is on the register and basically wants every bit of him that can be used , used. I have to admit i have real problems with this.
when people die we always says 'the body' and 'its just the body- its a shell' etc etc. i love my dh's body. i love the way it looks and feels and i know every inch of it. the thought of parts of his body being taken away- especially his corneas, really bothers me. i know its irrational and illogical but its how i feel. i like to think that i would respect his wishes but in that situation i don't know if i would.maybe something like this is the reason why the register is short of people?
i think the solution is for other people like parents and siblings to know of wishes as well as spouse so decision can be made by them maybe?

Yes, I find it a bit bizarre that if I've made the decision to register myself there would still need to be permission from my next of kin if doctors did want to use my organs. What's the point of making that decision, and acting on it, in life if your partner can then just disagree once you've gone??

Re: Noddyholder's comment... :

"..was shocked by this programme The ring in and vote for who gets the heart! The criteria for transplant allocation are not based on emotions but hard clinical facts The heart and lung disease recurs in CF patients as it is genetic and so her life expectancy could be shorter than his.."

Just wanted to say that although potentially, the 'new' lungs do run the risk of suffering the same fate as the originals, in reality this does not happen. Transplanted lungs are never as vulnerable to the ravages of CF and the fact of the matter is that the life threatening fibrosis aspect would take longer to reach a critical state than most transplant-patients live, due to the risks of rejection.

This means that 'Tony' and 'Lucy' would be succeptible to the same statistical risks of rejection.

I thought Lucy (despite her father).

I agree misdee it was a bit mean of them to give her a heart defect so that her heart couldn't be passed on.

Gobledigook, I suffer from all of the "fears" they were discussing on the programme. We had another discussion about it last night and my opinion still hasn't changed. You do read stories about people declared dead who then wake up, and however irrational it is I also feel that the doctors would be less likely to fight for you if they knew they could take your organs.

DH has always said he would donate. I very much doubt he has a card but I wouldn't refuse his organs if it came to it because I know that's what he wants. With the children though, I'm really not sure. DS2 said after watching the programme last night that there was no way he would sign a card.

I would be very unhappy about an opt out system and would be more likely to make a point of opting out in principle if it came in. I also don't agree with the assumption that the vast majority of people who haven't registered are apathetic. How do they know that is the case? There were certainly enough people interviewed who said no.

(No offence intended Misdee to your situation)

misdee · 28/08/2005 23:32

Talluah no offence taken. but i will admit to feeling sad that people think the docs wont battle to save them in the worst situation. makes me wonder if we will ever have a chance of a normal-ish life.

dd2+3 have never known dh to be 'well'. dd1 can remember him being well, and being able to do things, thats what hurts the most, she asks when he will be able to play again

Having an opt out system would maybe mean that people gave it more serious thought. And even if some people chose to opt on on principle I think the net effect would be more people on the register.

potty1 · 29/08/2005 14:26

sorry opt out on principle

What happened then? I'd set up Sky+ to record whilst away but it had a tantrum and only recorded the 'which one do you want' episode and I drifted off into a jetlagged sleep whilst watching it.

I think i would have gone for the girl. The man was older, had no dependents I think but happy to be corrected as I said I drifted in and out.
