This week I ordered a Graze Fruit box to be delivered to DD. She phoned today sooo thrilled with it. A mix of getting something unexpected (post-box envy goes on), & getting something different.

As it was

BumpyBecky - your time will come

Nice idea Lilymaid - but small enough to fit in pigeon-hole was my idea. Worth noting for someones birthday though!

Mummee - yes, they love the little bits don't they. That's the sort of thing I mean, little surprises to send at random times.

Bit late now but during my first year at uni my mum sent me an advent calender. I was so pleased and my housemates were really envious.

bentneckwine1 · 04/02/2010 18:41

My gran used to send me a food parcel which included a HUGE box of homemade coffee buns...I used to have a queue outside my room to share them!!

A real 'taste of home'

PandaG · 04/02/2010 18:54

my Dad is a newsagent and sent me the local paper every week while I was at uni, meant I got regular post!

Dad never ever writes, so the day I got a compliments slip from him with 'a note from Dad xxx' written on it, stapled to a tenner, was really special - the note more than the money.

A friend of my parents used to visit his mother near where I was at university, and mum used to send me a food parcel via him - home made cakes, chocolate etc., was lovely.

ideas to send

pair of gloves - needed at this time of year, and so easily lost

fiver - labelled spend me on tea and cake at a coffee shop (plenty where your DD is iirc)

credit for phone

book of stamps - so she can write back to you!

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 04/02/2010 18:55

My mum used to send an envelope stuffed with a handwritten postcard that she thought would be nice for my wall, and usually some kinf of choc bar taped to it. Plus stuff from papers she thought i'd be interested in (e.g. book reviews of fave authors books etc).

Little funky brooches from e.g. oxfam are cool. Tell you what's cheap to post - a really nice folded up cotton shopper bag, and if it's got a good design it will get endless use returning books to libraries etc.

Disposable camera if she hasn't got a digital.

ooh, notes from other people who wouldn't otherwise write e.g. granny, friend from school etc.

Bumperlicious · 04/02/2010 19:03

What a lovely mum you are. I'm very jealous as my mum does this sort of thing - for my DD! She'll just send her a random parcel of a colouring book and some buttons. I want someone to send me gifts!

Other ideas:

-an M&S voucher
-a board game from a charity shop, sounds naff but a great way to get your housemates together
-some sort of item for dressing up (we were always dressing up to go out
-pretty postcards or tacky ones of your home town
-a nail varnish in the lastest colour (don't ask me what that is though)

snickersnack · 04/02/2010 19:09

My mum used to send little parcels from time to time - bags of liquorice allsorts, stamped and addressed postcards, phonecard (this was pre mobiles), thermals, little books. Was a highlight of the week and made everyone incredibly jealous.

LollipopViolet · 04/02/2010 21:56

A little me to you bear??
A little note, and a voucher for something to de-stress her?'

It's really the thought more than the gift

I'm living at home for uni, but my mates loved getting post last year when they were in halls, but it was a pain to collect.

Save some of the bigger things people are suggesting for when she's in an actual house, as it's easier to get the post there. In halls they have certain times they have to go to the post box.

DaniellaC · 05/02/2010 19:42

The latest colour of nail varnish is lemon yellow

Monty100 · 06/02/2010 01:26

A pair of nice socks

A hot water bottle (not with water in lol)

Nice smelly soap

PJ's

A card with a tenner

A cookery book and a tenner to buy ingredients!

Am I a big softie?

Dreading the day when dd goes away, if she does.

Monty100 · 06/02/2010 01:28

If you know she's in one night, ring her fav chain pizza place or whatever, pay with card and have food delivered?

Monty100 · 06/02/2010 01:29

A supermarket on-line delivery of her fav food.

(Getting carried away now).

frakkinaround · 06/02/2010 07:40

Aw you lot are such lovely mummies.

Cards are such a nice thing to receive, pin up and reread.

If you have any French magazine requests Milliways let me know and I can have them sent from France and you can paypal or bank transfer me the cash in Sterling. I think I offered to look after your DD if she does her year abroad in Reunion!

mumeeee · 06/02/2010 15:04

I've just found some sachets of hair conditioner and face masks at boots.I've just sent DD2 a hair conditioner sachet.2 emary boards, mini note book, sachet of hot chocolate and some fun stickers. I know she'll enjoy getting tjhem and the letter.

Milliways · 07/02/2010 15:58

Well, DH is seeing her next week as giving her a lift to an interview, so I can send some bulky food treats.

Mumeee, yes, - I have sent her free sample sachets of stuff before, they are good fun.

Actually, I have just got a load of vouchers for Sainsburys that will go to

frakkinaround - I may well ask you to choose a mag on day. That would be great. I bought her a pile back from our holiday last year as she couldn't come with us. Trying to organise her to do a stay with some MNers has been a bit too hard as she was waiting to hear what dates she was working in what holidays etc, and I beleive she may be leaning towards Germany for her year out, but she has a whils to decide yet.
