HPV jab

My DD has been told that they are about to do these jabs at school. She is 17 so they have spread the initial target recipients. I have done some research on Gardasil and wil be encouraging her strongly NOT to have it. I am shocked by the number of deaths, the fact that it has been withdrawn in Spain, and especially this What do people think?

I have 2 girls, 14 and 13 and they both have had the series of shots after my dr. recommended it. Neither one of them had any after affects.

mamas12 · 29/09/2009 23:11

My dd brought home the forms today, the first jabs are scheculed for next week.
We haven't had time to discuss together at length but from what I gather it is a given I think at her school that they will all be having them.
Is there anyone out there that can tell me if babies have been born to vaccinated girls yet and if so were they ok
I'm thinking deprovera here.
Concerned but leaning towards it atm.

Hando & longtall...

I don't trust my dr much at all, at the moment. Reasons being

1] He wouldn't send me for tubal ligation until my youngest dc was 1. He said 'while exclusively b'feeding & on the mini pill you will not get pregnant, but maybe try condoms too' well guess what? Even tho using a condom too, I got pregnant! Which had to end in a termination.

2] My daughter (at her 6 week check) was sent to A&E as failure to thrive. Paed said NO WAY was she FTT.

3] She also has positional plagiocephaly which has, over 11 or so months corrected itself BEAUTIFULLY, almost to the point where there is nothing visible to me & dh & people who had not seen her for ages cannot tell there was ever anything wrong. However, my 'wonderful, experienced family dr' said there is no improvement & she needs to be seen again!

4] He told me NOT to quarantine dd (6) after a swine flu swab UNTIL I had a call from them to say if it was - or + . She was + & if I had not quarantined her, she would have potentially infected a family with a 4 week old baby & probably a lot of her school friends. When we got the + result he said she now needed to be quarantined for 7 days.

And you wonder why people trust their instinct & other parents & NOT their drs! Some of us have good reason!

Hi
I posted a links page on the health section (a girl has died) regarding some of the information sites that I have researched.

If you feel you have done as much research and feel that you have looked at both sides of this issue then you will be able to make an informed choice.

unfortunately the link for this scienceblog.cancerresearchuk.org/2009/03/18/behind-the-headlines-hpv-vaccines-and-cervical-cancer/ site didnt appear.

please look at these sites if you want more information about these jabs.

I dont always agree with Drs and i'm very cinical about drugs, therefore i look up and research as much as i can. There are many sites that offer this information. My decision for my DD is a personal choice based on information I have. NOT on the fact that an unfortunate girl has died and panic.

Hope these sites help some of you

This is the links section i posted on health section

Here are some links (hopefully) so that you will be able to see for yourself some of the sites i have searched.

www.cogforlife.org/gardasilfacts.htm

emc.medicines.org.uk/medicine/20204/SPC/Cervarix/

emc.medicines.org.uk/medicine/19016/SPC/GARDASIL/

The medicines.org sites are very technical and you should be advised to ask your GP to explain anything you do not understand.

cancerdrugnewsblog.blogspot.com/2009/05/cervarix-on-top-in-head-to-head-but-how.html

This last site states that gsk cervarix is only used in 2 countries the uk & netherlands (hmm are they a british company based in the netherland????)

It is a hard decision to make as YOU have to decide what is best for your child based on Government information. Hopefully these sites will help show that they dont always know best but if you can afford up to £400 to use Merck's gardasil, i personally would use that but not until my dd is at least 14 (2 years time) when more research has been done.

sorry its long winded but i belive we are all entitled to be well informed and not just follow where we are lead.

Sue1911, at least one of the sites you mention seems to lack credibility. Is the Peg Luksik on cogforlife, for example, the same woman standing for the US Senate on an anti-abortion, far right, religious ticket? I googled her and,if she is the same person, her PhD is only honorary (and her expertise is education, not medicine). So, to say the least, I question her motives and therefore her interpretation of the medical trials data.
Incidentally, why do you prefer Gardasil to Cervarix? Is it because it offers protection against genital warts too? Just curious.

sue1911 · 01/10/2009 14:33

Hi olderandwiser

Yes the reason I personnaly would chose Gardasil is that the product has been on the market longer and there is more data for long term results (ie some info now says it can protect for up to 9.5yrs instead of the 5 they 1st thought. There appear to be less extreme side effects and it protects against more HP viruses than Cervarix.

I would want more long term info before i agree to DD having this jab.

This is my personal opinion as i stated. I list both for & against sites (see previous msg and link below

www.webmd.com/sexual-conditions/hpv-genital-warts/news/20070919/cervical-cancer-vaccine-is-a-winner

The reason I chose to include cogforlife wasnt to be pro Peg Luksik and her beliefs, it was to highlight that even the drug company do not know the longterm results and that they do not always carry out sufficient trials to give a full unbiased spectrum of results.

I'm not medical and have never claimed to be. I listed sites that i felt would give parents a better chance to study for themselves and chose occordingly.

I think a vacination against some of the causes of cervical cancer is wonderful. I would also happily give this to my DD, IF and thats a big IF, the drug companies had more long term data on long term side effects.

For example some of the alleged ingredients people are concerned about are alluminium and polysorbate 80, both can lead to cancer and infertility. However i would also point out that these are also in most face creams (especially the expensive ones), showergels and deodorants !

olderandwider · 01/10/2009 15:20

Hi Sue1911, I have looked at cervarix and it has a good safety record and as that's what's available here, that's what my DD has had.

Re testing and safety: mums with two year old DDs can affort to wait another 10 years and see how cervarix/gardisil safety and effectiveness debate pans out. But those with teens can't wait that long if they want to take advantage of it.

I don't know the answer, but what is typical length of time that groups are followed up for long term effects once a trial is ended? If we expect drug companies to monitor groups for, say, 10 years, then that will hugely delay potentially life-saving treatments (not just Cervarix) coming to market. Perhaps waiting for a 100 per cent guarantee of safety could result in more cases of cervical cancer that might otherwise have been avoided.

sue1911 · 01/10/2009 15:35

I am lucky that I have spoken to my DD and we have agreed that intimate physical contact is not an issue with her at the moment. The research has been going on for about 7 years. I am prepared to wait another 2 years until she is 14. The data (as i understand it) states that it does begin to reduce efficiency after about 2 years. Therefore to me, giving it to kids of 12 is perhaps a little early. Yes I do know that kids are sexually more active earlier now a days.

No medication is 100% effective and without side effects. I know this and I also appreciate that any delay could cause more cases of cervical cancer but i'm talking 2 years in my personal case. Which will hopefully be beforeor about the time my DD becomes sexually active.

If my DD was 14+ I would be more likely to give her the jab, but I will feel more confident in giving it to her if I wait 2 years.
