did you wean them at 4 months as was the advice then, and were they ok.
Just wondered as ds is 16 and way back then It was 4 months.
a lot of new parents seem to assume this was all wrong

yes!

janeite · 25/10/2008 22:37

Yes. DD1 was weaned at around four and a half months iirc. She was also totally veggie until she started school and is again totally veggie at 13 after dabbling with meat for a few years. She is very tall and very skinny (as they say children who start out as veggie often are) but also very healthy!

catweazle · 25/10/2008 22:41

When my eldest (22) was a baby it was 12 weeks or 12 lbs

By the time DS1 was born 18 mo later it was 4 months ("no earlier or you'll damage his kidneys" said the same blasted HV who only 18 months earlier had insisted that my 12 week old DD was ready for baby rice ).

3 of my 4 weren't ready for solids at 3/4 months but we weaned because we were told to. DD had eczema and was allergic to egg. Is now very faddy about food. DS1 and DS2 aren't NT so who knows what would have made the difference. DS3 seems OK.

SilentTerror · 25/10/2008 22:41

DD1 now 19 was 12 weeks.The advice then was 12lb or 12 weeks,whichever came first.
Is very healthy.
In fact, each of my four have been weaned at different times according to 'latest advice'.
Doesn't seem any difference in them, tbh

ewwwmy2shoesarefullofblood · 25/10/2008 22:43

oh dd was a nightmare, she didn't take milk well and as for weaning(nightmare emotion) it was horrendous(she has cp) but wow she eats everything now.

I can't remember it was ages ago.

ewwwmy2shoesarefullofblood · 25/10/2008 22:44

do you think the advice changes as the big wigs realy haven't got a clue?

OP posts:
RustyBear · 25/10/2008 22:47

Yes, I followed the advice at the time & weaned at 4 months.
But I also followed the advice at the time and put them to sleep on their tummies.

I don't feel now that I was 'wrong' to do either; I was doing the best I could with what I knew at the time, but if I had one now (OK, it would be a medical miracle, as I am menopausal but let's suspend disbelief for a second ) I would follow current advice and put them on their back & wean at 6 months.

RustyBear · 25/10/2008 23:00

SilentTerror - where did you find the advice to wean at 12 weeks?
DS is 20 now & DD 18 - DS was very small & the HV suggested giving solids at 12 weeks - I read everything I could lay my hands on & they all said 4 months, even the leaflets in the baby clinic the HV worked at- so I waited till then.

lilolilmanchester · 25/10/2008 23:13

Ds was 3 1/2 months, DD 4 months. I try to stay off the weaning threads for fear of sounding like my mother... My DCs eat EVERYTHING (even cabbage, sprouts and liver), and neither have ever had a day off school sick, so "early weaning never hurt them" HOWEVER, if I was Mum of a baby now, would heed the current advice. I BF mine til they were over a year, that said would have struggled to BF them exclusively til they were 6 months. So count myself very lucky that I am not a young Mum now (tho wasn't a young Mum back then!!!)

ewwwmy2shoesarefullofblood · 25/10/2008 23:15

oh I am sure I would too, but surely that doesn't make what we did wrong

Tortington · 25/10/2008 23:15

i think so. i remember being obsessed with an electric hand held food processor back in 1993.

everything is such a fucking science these days.

WezMeBroomstick · 25/10/2008 23:27

DD1 almost a teenager...weaned her at 16 weeks just like I was told to.

ewwwmy2shoesarefullofblood · 25/10/2008 23:27

oh I have one of those for dd(13) milk/nesquick and thick and easy don't mix with out it

OP posts:
scaredoflove · 25/10/2008 23:34

yes, though no3 child was 6 months as was a boob fiend and slept all night and really didn't need anything else, the others by 4 months had changed behaviours

And they are all fine, the late weaned, bf one is the one with all the allergies (which I know is sods law)

If I had more kids (which I won't) I don't know what I would do re new guidelines

MrsWeasleyIsTheCrazyHatLady · 25/10/2008 23:45

mine is 13 and I weaned at just after 4 months I tried delaying until 6 months but she started waking in the night and wasnt satified by her milk.

FWIW the midwife told me to wean her at 3 months because she was small

UniversallyChallenged · 26/10/2008 00:01

All mine (ages 3 to 15) were first put on solids at 14 weeks. They were all such hungry babies that milk didnt appear to sustain them. I have noticed over the years how advice has swung backwards and forwards over things. I now do what I feel is right and more importantly what suits my child at the time, rather than any latest thinking

lou33 · 26/10/2008 00:06

dd1 is 16.5 and the advice then for me was weaning at 3 months, but she was 10 weeks old when we did, on advice from the hv

she is fine

kiddiz · 26/10/2008 00:20

From what I have understood any possible problems manifest later in life than teens. I could be wrong though....it has been known!

witcheseve · 26/10/2008 00:21

DD aged 14. Started weaning at 3 months. No health problems at all and never has had. She loves her food though (that should not be a problem).

kiddiz · 26/10/2008 00:21

All mine 20,17 and 11 were weaned at 4/5 months

witcheseve · 26/10/2008 00:23

kiddiz, what problems in late teens? Can you expand?

NightOfTheLivingThread · 26/10/2008 00:25

In ten years time people will be posting on mumsnet to ask 'Did you wean your child at [whatever the current advice is] and were they ok?'

All the fine details of official advice change from year to year and seem so crucial to mothers of babies. But in practice with all our compromises and our 'failure to get it right' we are all pretty much doing the same from one decade to the next.

MrsMuddle · 26/10/2008 00:56

Eldest is 13, and HV recommended weaning at 8 weeks because he was very hungry. No health problems - in fact got a certificate for going through 7 years of primary with perfect attendance. Is now a strapping 6-ft tall rugby playing teenager.
