Reasonable bedtime for 15 year old

Back to school, and that age-old bedtime fight.

DD is 15; does loads of sport; doing 9 gcses; school day is 8.15am - 5.30pm and Saturday 8.15 - 1 with sport afterwards. Gets up at 7.15am.

One week back at school and she is knackered - blaming it on the sport after a summer of slacking and inactivity but I know damn well she isn't getting enough sleep either.

What time do you think she should go to bed?

DD1 is almost 15 and I have said 10pm bedtime on school nights. She has to be up at 7am and does 2-3 evenings of sport. She currently doesn't have any morning activities at the weekend, so will spend most of those in bed!

Uriel · 08/09/2008 09:15

Hmm. 9.30.

brightwell · 08/09/2008 09:47

My 14 year old dd goes to bed 10'ish and settles down to sleep between 10.30-10.50. She gets up at 7.15. At the weekend I don't see her until at least 11am and then she usually goes back to bed to watch tv.

Ds is 15 and goes to bed at 10.30 on a school night ..usually asleep by 11 ..gets up at 7 .15

snorkle · 08/09/2008 10:11

ds is 14.5: Does lots of sport too; usually goes to bed about 10.30pm and tends to read for up to an hour in bed. Gets up at 7am (earlier sometimes). Sometimes it all catches up with him & he sleeps for England though. I think all children are different & if you know she's over tired then she needs more sleep regardless of what others are doing. I've heard that teens can go through a stage of needing more sleep than they did previously too, so you can't always guage requirements on that either. Not good to be knackered just a week into term though.

Lauriefairycake · 08/09/2008 10:13

considering where she is at the moment (exhausted) then 9 for a few weeks.

BecauseImWorthIt · 08/09/2008 10:14

DS2 is 13 and his bedtime is 9.30 (has been for some time - if he doesn't go then he's knackered the next day). Groggy at 7 when we all DH gets them up and I lig in bed for another 20 minutes

DS1 is 16 and his is supposed to be 10pm although he does resist. He usually does to bed but listens to his iPod for a while. Not a problem getting him up at 7.

BecauseImWorthIt · 08/09/2008 10:15

Ooh hello MTA - didn't realise you were the OP. You could have skyped me the question!

RTKangaMummy · 08/09/2008 10:20

DS is 13 and he goes to bed @ 8.30 but he is up @ 6.00 sometimes earlier

He is out @ Fencing club on Monday nights and gets home about 9.45pm so is obviously later to bed.

On saturdays he is @ drama school in the morning and so doesn't sleep in but on sundays he can sleep in but doesn't tend to apart from getting up @ 7am instead of 6am!!!

He is deffo a morning person {atm anyway}

BUT I agree all teenagers are different.

juneybean · 08/09/2008 10:21

I was sent up to my room about 9.30pm and "told" to go to bed at 10pm but it'd usually be 11pm after reading and such.

RTKangaMummy · 08/09/2008 10:22

yes I meant he goes to bed to read although he is usually asleep within 30 mins

lilolilmanchester · 08/09/2008 10:54

trying to get our yr 11 DS into bed by 10:30 (up at 7:30) but it's a struggle. If tired, then send him earlier but rarely asleep before 11.

seeker · 08/09/2008 11:03

I would say lights out at 10.00 at the very latest - preferably 9.30. But one of my many hobby horses is children not getting enough sleep. Theya re busy, they are growing, they need to be in bed and reading if not asleep!

ShrinkingViolet · 08/09/2008 11:10

DD1 (who needs loads of sleep) will be in bed by around 10, up at 7.30 (ish) but very groggy. Weekends around 10.30, btu will sleep in till 10 (mean mummy wakes her up then, otherwise it woudl be at least midday).
She is unusual amongst her friends in needing so much sleep though, and fortunately accepts she needs earlier bedtimes.

RedHead81 · 08/09/2008 11:14

At 15 I was allowed out til 10pm (very small quiet village and there was only ever a few of us) and I was then in bed by 10:30 / 11pm - I didn't need to get up for school til 8am though.

psychomum5 · 08/09/2008 12:05

I am having this arguement aswell with my 14yr DD1. at the moment we have agreed on her being in bed before me or at the same time (which is normally 9pm and then I either read or MN, but sometimes 10pm), and then she is free to read herself or she also goes on her laptop.

I cannot make her go to sleep however, and this is my row as she is often still awake at midnight...........I think her being on her laptop is too stimulating.

problem is tho, she is so like me......much more an evening person than early and I also can find it hard to go to sleep....so I am sympathetic rather than angry about her being up.....which gives her reason to say to me that she can cope as I do!

it is hard isn;t it, parenting teens. there is not the same 'cos I said so' ability that you have when they are younger.

MrsMattie · 08/09/2008 12:07

She probably needs 8 hours a night sleep, so 10.30-ish?

mumblechum · 08/09/2008 12:11

We had this convo this am, as ds was watching a film on his ipod touch till midnight under the covers [grr]

Have agreed 9pm tonight, and only allowed to read books he finds boring, eg David Copperfield.

He goes to bed at 9 on school nights but reads till 10 normally.

Libra · 08/09/2008 12:13

DS1 is 14 and on school nights goes up at 9.30. Can then read in bed, but the rule is no moving around or noise after 10 because I go to bed then and my bedroom is below his, so any noise travels.

seeker · 08/09/2008 12:24

And no screens of any sort in bedrooms. God,I'm a boring old fart!

ethanchristopher · 14/09/2008 09:58

when she wants

she knows she has to be out of the house by whatever time so as long as she is at school it is fine surely?

she'll work out quickly that she has to be in bed by a certain time

either that or turn of the internet access at 10 or something

Mine is nearly 13 and would stay up til midnight given half a chance (and did so over half term). I've been trying to get her in bed by 10 on school nights.... Can't make her sleep tho. She gets up at 6.30 so I think she should be in bed at 9.30 but some of her structured activities finish at 9.00 or 9.30...

FreeFreesia · 04/06/2019 19:59

DS 14 but yr10 goes upstairs between 9.30 & 9.45pm Mon-Fri. Lights off at 10pm & gets woken at 7am.

BrokenWing · 07/06/2019 15:22

Ds(15) needs 8:30hrs sleep minimum or he's a nightmare. So bed is always before 10:30pm. Sometimes he goes up at 9:30 if tired.
Screens/game console is off by 9/9:30. When is lights out he'd usually asleep quickly.
