Punishments for 16 year old

So if your teen has done something bad what punishments would you impose?

Like grounding and taking phone off her seems like cutting her off from social network. But both things tie to the crime (she was bullying another girl online and with friends)

Shes currently one week into no phone and grounding. Shes showing no signs of remorse which is making things more difficult.
Thinking about getting a brick phone least then Shes contactable.

Would you do the same? 16 is such a child and not at the same time. In Scotland if that makes a difference

I'd be restricting online access. Homework to be done at the kitchen table so you can supervise.
Brick phone sounds like a good idea.

Yes school aware. Dd has been moved classes so shes not in the same class as the girl anymore.

Dd thinks this is unfair.

I dont think contacting the poor lassie will help in any way.
Yes im concerned with the no remorse too.
School hasn't really done anything aside from moving the classes. Shes supposed to have 1 lunch detention but that hasn't materialised

Could you contact a bullying charity? Get them to give her some real life scenarios on the impact of bullying? What it could lead to? Make her volunteer?

SummerInSun · 10/03/2026 14:56

Try reading “how to talk so teenagers will listen and listen so teenagers will talk”. Have you tired a calm conversation about why she treated that girl that way, why she the though it was ok, how does she think the other girl felt, how would she feel if she was treated that way? What does she say to those questions?

Goldfsh · 10/03/2026 14:59

Blimey. Is she generally nice? Or is this out of character?

It's hard to know what to do if she's bullying someone with no remorse.

What are her hobbies? Does she have a job or anything? Could you give her a brick phone until she earns enough to pay for her own phone?

What is she bullying her about? If it's looks/clothes, she would be losing make up/straighteners etc

MyVividFox · 10/03/2026 15:18

I would recommend to read "Queen Bee and wannabes" to any girl mother. I was so surprised and shocked even to read it. It opened my eyes on my DD behaviour.
It has a chapter on bulling as well

Dairymilkisminging · 10/03/2026 15:44

Its not about looks. Its more this lassie said something about someone else so dd tells the person and then they both have a go at the lassie.
Dd and lassie used to be friends.

It seems this lassie is a bit less mature than others and dd is behind on this aspect too.

Thank you for the recommendations.

I've had numerous conversations with dd about it. All at different points to try catch her in a different mood.
Dd was bullied horrendously last year (by a boy) so she knows what it feels like so I just dont get it.

I wouldnt even give her a brick phone because she can still talk to her friends...

No phone, No internet, No gaming,
She would be grounded untill she understand the impact bullying has and she was truly sorry

At 16, i would of thought she would of known this already though

Dairymilkisminging · 10/03/2026 17:11

Pretty sure she knows she just either didnt think and egged on by friends or didnt care its not 100% clear which it is yet.
Shes probably more the mentality of a 13 year old. Wears alot of snoopy clothes. Not really into make up much. Wants to wear cat ears outside stuff like that

Not sure how that is bullying. "Bullied" said sonething unkind about your dds friend and they both then called her out on it?

No it wasnt just a calling out. the person dd told and dd would then be very unkind to lassie. Either dd or dds friends would be egging each other on its not clear which yet.

Out of the blue. Shes normally the one getting picked on. She still has scars from the last bout of bullying.

Wanting to wear cat ears out being bullied, bullying a friend, seemingly not understanding what she's done - have you considered that she might be on the austic spectrum (mum of two asd girls myself)?
