Who makes school lunch

ChantsHinch · 26/02/2026 18:19

I have 2 DD, 14 and 19. Both in school. I make their lunches and a friend of mine was shocked that I still make my girls lunch. I thought we were all doing this??? Just wondering when you stopped making school lunches for your kids?

Mine’s 11 and makes their own - I have enough to do!

FullOfFresias · 26/02/2026 18:23

Stopped making them for mine around age 9 or 10.

ItWasntMyFault · 26/02/2026 18:35

I stopped making their lunch when they were about 9.

arethereanyleftatall · 26/02/2026 18:36

I stopped around 10 yrs old I think.

arethereanyleftatall · 26/02/2026 18:38

I should clarify - they make their own, they don’t get money for cafeteria.

50NotFat · 26/02/2026 18:38

Mine made their own the moment they started comp.

MoreIcedLattePlease · 26/02/2026 18:39

I'm making mine, may as well make one for them too...

What do they make for themselves ?

We temporarily stopped but restarted to control the chocolate content and lack of fruit. DDs are 14 and 18. Dh makes them because I hate it.

50sFun · 26/02/2026 18:40

I made my dc lunches until they stopped eating packed lunch at 15/16.

Ditto. I have always hated making pack ups - even though I know they only take 2 minutes so I encouraged mine as soon as I could. My dc do theirs as soon as they have finished eating tea.

I make for my teens, although they occasionally make their own or buy at school. Much easier for my groceries/ meal planning and ensures they get a balanced meal.

MarchInHappiness · 26/02/2026 18:42

I would make DD sandwiches but I was making mine at the same time. She studied hard In the evenings and sometimes worked so I wasn't going to not make hers to prove a point.

JustAnotherWhinger · 26/02/2026 18:43

MIL makes packed lunches in our house.

The teens have other jobs though - I just don’t believe in everyone doing their own washing, everyone making their own lunch etc. it’s not good time management imo.

Mine make a sandwich/pitta or something like that. A yoghurt drink, packet of crisps and then apple or banana plus whatever other fruit we have in e.g pineapple pot or strawberries. They might bung a lump of cheese and some crackers or a sausage roll in too if it’s a longer day. I’m sure it could be healthier but it could also be a lot worse.

stickydough · 26/02/2026 18:44

My 10yr old makes her own several days, sometimes I do it for her as I’m doing her sister’s and to let me control her food choices a bit. But she’s well capable - yours must be or can learn anyway.

bookstack · 26/02/2026 18:45

Mine made their own from about 11/12, I didn’t think anyone did this when they got that old???

xyzandabc · 26/02/2026 18:45

Mine generally have school dinners. On the odd occasion they need a packed lunch, either for school or a weekend scout/cadet event, they've made their own since the later years of primary school. I do ask them if there's anything specific they'd like me to get in for them to make a packed lunch but the actual making it and putting it together is all on them

I think that’s the key. As long as everyone is pulling their weight and nobody takes the piss.

Mine are 11 and 8 and they’re responsible for getting it all ready. I help the youngest by making his sandwiches but that’s it. I pay for school dinners because I don’t want to be making lunches every day!

Why does it feel like one of the worst jobs to do despite taking minutes? 😂

GreenPears · 26/02/2026 19:00

12 year old makes her own lunch and has been doing since about 10 and cooks dinner once a week. I think your friend was right to be shocked.

minipie · 26/02/2026 19:02

I will cook and leave leftovers in the fridge, DD will heat and put in food flask.

So guess it’s my cooking but her packing?

GroovyChick87 · 26/02/2026 19:03

I still make my 17 year old a sandwich. I'm doing it for my younger kids so why wouldn't I do it for him? Now and again he'll say he wants to buy his lunch out or he'll make his own. Sometimes I push the boat out and make my husband a sandwich.

Mathsdebator · 26/02/2026 19:09

Ds (14) and I make his lunches together on a Sunday. A taco chicken and rice wrap for Monday to Thursday. He takes a tin of soup in a flask on a Friday
He's a creature of habit
