...any suggestions for a small car with a reasonable(!) insurance rating?

Good safety rating obviously top priority.

Not sure on budget yet - probably £3k ish.

Skoda Citygo or Honda Jazz?

Miloarmadillo2 · 12/02/2025 19:03

Toyota Aygo

Toyota Aygo

No chance of getting one for £3k!

Following with interest OP - DD is 20 and still shares a car with me (purposefully downsized from an SUV for this reason, sadly!) as it’s just so expensive to buy and insure, especially for a young driver.

Thanks all. A colleague has just got her DD a Fiat 500 but there's something I can't put my finger on about them that I don't like.

I'd look at something like this but as others have said, it's the insurance that will cripple them atm.

DD has a little Citroën C1. Insurance is pretty reasonable (for a young new driver).

I've just looked at auto trader, there are over 300 Toyota Aygos nationwide under £3k.

DS has one as he passed his test last year.

Good little car, and is cheap to run.

hereismydog · 12/02/2025 19:46

I loved my Suzuki Alto.

Eh ?

I've just put 'Toyota Aygo' into Autotrader, price range £2500 - £3500 and there are 205 for sale.

@RazzzzzzzzzlllllllleDaaazzzzllle

Peugeot 107, Citroen C1 and Toyota Aygo.
They are all essentially the same car - built as a collaboration between the three companies.
Lowest insurance bracket. High mpg. Zero/£20 road tax. Cheap to fix.

We've just bought a 2014 107 for £2300.
£850 insurance for 17 year old + me as named driver.
Whatever you do, check insurance price before committing to buying anything. You don't want to find the insurance costs more than the car!

Ooh, a 107 looks ideal actually. I've had pretty good experiences with Peugeots in the past myself

I love my Fiat 500 - it's my 2nd one aswell. If we all liked the same cars it would be boring!

Gumbo · 12/02/2025 20:16

We got DS a Skoda Citigo - fantastic and reliable little car with plenty of decent safety features, and cheap to insure (with a black box around £800 pa). He loves it and even took the driving test in it!

CatsBalls · 12/02/2025 20:16

just paid £365 for a year’s insurance on a C1 for a new driver.

Eloise768 · 12/02/2025 20:18

Fiat 500 door handles coming off is a huge issue. They’re cheap on eBay but poor quality. A proper fiat one is £180 from fiat 😂

NavyReader · 12/02/2025 20:20

Same budget as yours for both my sons who still love their cars and took their tests in them 😀. My advice is to buy old, solid (get a trusted mechanic to look them over), low mileage, 1.4l or less engine cars. Mine have Skoda Fabia and VW Polo both bought under 30k mileage and looked after (both by one probably older owner 🙂). No one will steal them 😂 Insurance in their name is achievable (with black box) and starts building their no claims bonus and little bumps aren't a big deal.

Namefortodayandtomorrow · 12/02/2025 21:07

We test drive the Toyota Aygo and the Hyundai i10. We went for the Hyundai - great little car.

Pinkandgreentrousers · 12/02/2025 21:14

Hyundai i10

Moveoverdarlin · 12/02/2025 21:25

I’d go for a Fiat 500 every time.

Xelda · 12/02/2025 21:32

Dd has a Hyundai i10, 1.2L. It's economical but also really nice to drive.

AlleyRose · 12/02/2025 21:37

C1. My DD loves hers.

Chasingsquirrels · 12/02/2025 21:37

Ds has a 63 plate Hyundai i10, given to him by his grandparent.
Reasonable (haha) insurance.
I took it on a few 2hr motorway trips and was quite impressed.

CarpetKnees · 12/02/2025 22:34

just paid £365 for a year’s insurance on a C1 for a new driver.

Which is lovely, and fantastic for you / them, but postcodes have a massive impact. I've got 27 yrs No Claims, and tick lots of boxes for being a 'sensible driver' and struggle to get my insurance down to £300, due to our postcode.

One of my adult dc moved into their own house last year, and on renewal, their car insurance halved, even though they are only 4 miles away and still drive all the same routes they were from here.
