Do girls still cover boys' hoodies?

RealHousewivesOfTaunton · 08/12/2024 23:05

When I was a teenager, getting to borrow a boy's hoodie was a high point of any day. I asked my 14yo DS whether girls ever borrowed his hoodies and he was outraged that a girl would "steal" his clothing!

Is it still a thing?

Edit: the title should be covet.

My teenage son has had several hoodies 'borrowed' by whichever girl he was seeing at the time. The difficulty is sometimes getting them back again!

Whiskeywithwater · 09/12/2024 14:14

My DD seems to have an entire wardrobe made up of her boyfriend’s clothes. Hoodies, t-shirts, joggers - even boxers that she ends up coming home in if there’s an impromptu sleepover. I just wash and iron them as routine now (I don’t iron the boxers obviously- I’m not deranged). No idea what the poor boy has left to wear!

LittleRedRidingHoody · 09/12/2024 14:17

Still a thing.

I always buy DB a hoodie as part of his Christmas gifts, and I never see it again! His girlfriend (and the one before, and the one before that...) however always turns up for things in hoodies I've purchased 👀

Last Christmas I brought them matching hoodies. Apparently she still stole his 😂

Bless your DS! I still have a pair of baggy tracksuit bottoms from a boyfriend I had when I was 17 and I'm 34 now! (Things used to be much better quality!!). It's better he knows now he will be expected to share his hoodies, jackets and trackies, and should be prepared to ask for them back if the girls take too much of a shine to them

JustAMiddleAgedDirtBagBaby · 09/12/2024 14:22

We always know when there's a new girl on the scene because one of DS's hoodies disappears, and he starts wearing one we've never seen before. So it seems to be more of a swap than outright theft around here!

mitogoshigg · 09/12/2024 14:24

My dd certainly did, only in early 20's now

Dueanamechange2025 · 09/12/2024 14:25

Yes still a thing, my DS made the mistake of dumping his first gf without getting his favorite clothes back, when asked for them she told him she was going to burn them! Valuable lesson for him! 😂

ObliviousCoalmine · 09/12/2024 14:26

Definitely still a thing.

ouch44 · 09/12/2024 14:36

Yes my DD was wearing a hoodie I'd never seen before. First time I asked I didn't twig whose it was (new boyfriend) and she lied. Second time I asked her she told me it was his. Doubt they've swapped she's a foot shorter than him! Probably explain how her eczema flared up too!

WinterFollies · 09/12/2024 14:58

My DS has quite a few of his girlfriends hoodies!

I honestly thought we were bad parents for not giving him enough money for clothes

Mipil · 09/12/2024 14:58

It was definitely still a thing when mine were teenagers. I was quite amused recently to see my DS26’s DP wearing my teenage boyfriend’s band t shirt that I “borrowed” circa 1986, and DS “borrowed” about 10 years ago 😂

I think it is definitely still a thing! My cousins are 14-19 and they seem to loaf about in massive boys hoodies quite often, and seem absolutely thrilled (secretly not so secretly!) if you ask where it came from! Of course I’m sure it would be hideous to them if I mentioned how nothing ever changes! I believe I still have my boyfriend-at-the-time’s Gloucester uni rugby hoodie, what a status symbol that was to a 16 year old… especially when he’d pick me up on a Friday arvo in his saxo 😂

Iwontlethtesungodownonme · 09/12/2024 15:06

My dd and her boyfriend seem to have entirely interchangeable wardrobes.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 09/12/2024 15:09

My dd was a bugger for this, so many random items of boys clothing! But now she's 26 and in a ltr, boots on the other foot as he's always nicking her socks and pyjama Bottoms. (The fleecy ones)

Travelban · 09/12/2024 15:22

My teenage daughter last year at one point had 4 or 5 of her boyfriends' hoodies. I kept joking with him was he sure I wasn't going to get a call from his mum to return them 😅

Only a t-shirt and a hoodie belonging to current boyfriend, which she sleeps with daily! Early days, I am sure we will have more... so definitely a thing. Very cute, I think.

When both dds split up with boyfriends, I made sure they returned everything... although dd still has her first ever boufriends hoodie as he didnt want it back as had grown out of it!!

RealHousewivesOfTaunton · 09/12/2024 18:00

Ahhh, it's so nice to know this hasn't changed. Getting a boy's nice, warm hoodie smelling slightly of Lynx and knowing that everyone knew it wasn't yours... such a great feeling! I might sleep in one of DH's t-shirts tonight, just for the nostalgia factor.

I've advised DS not to wear his favourite hoodie on school trips. I also asked whether any girls were expecting/hoping for a Christmas present from him. "I don't know, I can't read their minds!" 🙄So disappointing. I'd love buying stealable hoodies.

Same, I love this too and yy I might steal my husband's t shirt too, he doesn't really wear hoodies anymore lol

RealHousewivesOfTaunton · 09/12/2024 20:08

DH is more of a knitted crew neck guy. I might buy him a shared hoodie for Christmas.

DD was outraged when her BF reported that a girl where he worked asked to borrow his hoodie.
Uk version of Letterman sweater or class ring i think (based on Grease)

RealHousewivesOfTaunton · 09/12/2024 20:16

That's real CFery. A boyfriend's hoodie is for his gf!

I joked about this with my boyfriend, that I didn't consider us a couple until I stole a hoodie.

The next date he brought along his favourite hoodie, sprayed with the aftershave inloved him wearing and gave it to me.

That's when I realised I loved him 🤣🤣🤣 especially as it was his favourite one!

EmmaEmEmz · 09/12/2024 20:24

Oh and I'm 40 and hes 44 so we definitely aren't teenagers

itsmeits · 09/12/2024 20:47

A friend of ours came over a few weeks ago and kept glancing at my DD and shaking his head. When she left the room he asked if that was his limited edition kickers jumper that disappeared one night many years ago.
I text my DSis and...
Turns out my DSis 'borrowed' it years ago when they went out for about 6 months. She left it at mine a few years later I borrowed, my DS claimed it at some point now my DD is in it.
DSs has had several hoodies and jackets disappear over the years.

Angrymum22 · 09/12/2024 21:04

Yes DS had a number of hoodies that were never seen again. He has also lost shirts and the odd t shirt.
My DH was very sporty in his 20s and 30s and wore a lot of adidas and Nike training gear. He has always been particular with clothing so had a vintage collection of sweatshirts and T shirts that he kept for DS. I tried to tell him that DS was unlikely to wear clothes from the 80s, I was wrong!
DS has worked his way through DH’s wardrobe but I think there is more stuff in the loft.
DS is now a serious vintage clothes wearer. In my day they were charity shop and rag market clothing. I still pick up the odd bargain for DS, I found an unworn pair of vintage Levis recently for £10. You can date them by the label.

Hoppinggreen · 09/12/2024 21:07

When DD broke up with her first BF aged 14 there were quite a few nice hoodies left here. She offered them back but he ignored her so her younger brother inherited them - Ralph Lauren and Hugo Boss
