Who would you say is a gentlemanly/chivalrous famous man?

I was hosting a bunch of my daughter's 17/18 year old friends at the weekend. They were very drunk and one of the boys displayed some dodgy behaviour towards one of the girls who was even drunker. I berated him and told him it was unacceptable. I told him that he should always try to be respectful and be a gentleman and would have liked to give an example of someone that he would have heard of who is known for being a gentleman/chivalrous. A good male role model. Kind of along the lines of how people would say "what would the queen do" ? about the old queen. But I couldn't think of anyone in the moment. Even now I am struggling to think of anyone. David Beckham maybe? Who do you think is a genuinely decent guy?

OP posts:

Keanu Reeves.

James Norton seems a nice guy

Jonathan Bailey

Surely it needs to be someone closer in age to these kids, rather than old enough to be their father?

OMGsamesame · 27/11/2024 09:14

Unless it's someone you're certain hasn't blotted their copy book, AND is appealing/recognisable to these boys then you're on a hiding to nothing.

LimeYellow · 27/11/2024 09:14

Tom Holland

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 27/11/2024 09:14

Not necessarily. Most men learn how to be good men from those much older than they are.

Plus I have no clue who I could recommend of the current crop of 'celebrities'.

senua · 27/11/2024 09:16

It's a difficult question because a lot of blokes appear OK when younger but the truth comes out later on. Therefore you want someone with a history of being decent - but will a 17/18 year old relate to them?

David Attenborough?
Definitely not David Beckham.

lemonlavendar · 27/11/2024 09:17

Pierce Brosnan
Bill Nighy
Richard E Grant

Bewareofthisonetoo · 27/11/2024 09:17

Agree

Bewareofthisonetoo · 27/11/2024 09:18

Not Bill Nighy!!! Numerous affairs including with a close friend of mine!

Seeline · 27/11/2024 09:18

I don't think you can unless you know the celebrity personally.
Ok some are obviously not, but these days image is so manipulated that I don't think you can be certain about any if them.
They may seem lovely when chatting on Graham Norton, and no one has spotted them cheating on their partner, but you don't know the real person.
This is the problem with a celebrity worshipping society.
Role models should come from within the family and local community.

MoodEnhancer · 27/11/2024 09:20

Well done OP, for calling him out. But if by dodgy behaviour you mean it was in any way sexual, then he needs someone to have a strong word with him about what real consent looks like and that taking advantage of a girl vulnerable for any reason, in this case through alcohol, is not just ungentlemanly, but frankly predatory.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 27/11/2024 09:24

Are you sure you should be hosting a house full of very drunk 17 year olds?

I mean I know they drink but are you actually serving them alcohol and watching them get shit faced?!

MarvelJesus · 27/11/2024 09:24

Some men I know have lovely manners:

Benedict Cumberbatch
Mark Gatiss
Rory Stewart
David Attenborough
Tom Holland
Richard E Grant

And Michael Caine

No!!! Didn’t he bombard his now wife with messages until she agreed to date him? He’d seen her in an ad, I think.

CandleStub · 27/11/2024 09:26

Jason Momoa

I wanted to say this but also didn't want to get into it.

It's risky setting up celebrities as role models, although of course it's natural as a kid to look up to famous people. Very few famous people are worthy of that.

Apolloneuro · 27/11/2024 09:30

I don’t think the footballer Marcus Rashford has had any unpleasant behaviour made public. He campaigned for food for kids during the pandemic.

JaninaDuszejko · 27/11/2024 09:31

Andy Murray has consistently spoken up in support of women in sport and would be my first choice.

My teenager DDs love Tom Holland but since that seems to be based on him appearing eternally grateful that he's getting to shag the beautiful Zendeya I'm not sure he's the best example really. Joe Alwyn (Taylor Swifts last paramour) did not get any nasty songs written about him and has remained tightlipped about the end of the relationship which is a good sign. Maybe one for the girls though.
