15 -16 years?
mine not quite that age yet.

chopchopbusybusy · 17/04/2008 23:32

DD is in YR9 and goes to bed at 10ish. 10.30 on Wednesday so that she can watch the BBC2 follow up show for The Apprentice. I think it's late, but I have tried sending her earlier and it takes her ages to get to sleep. Always up in time for school in the morning.

lilolilmanchester · 17/04/2008 23:33

14 -15 is year 10 (4th year to me) ; 15 -16 is yr 11 (5th year to me)
Thanks for bumping it anyway BlinkingNora

Hm. Well. In theory mine (DS2, just turned 15) is in bed by 10.30 but in fact there is always something gripping on the TV that finishes at 11 if I'm lucky

And then he prats about for another half-hour - he hasn't settled down yet in fact.

HTH

lilolilmanchester · 17/04/2008 23:36

which was precisely why I was asking Wendy, tho I think mine is finally asleep. Just.

well my dd1 is year 7 and she goes up about 9 to 9:15pm
reads and then she turns her light off about 15 mins later. Up at 7am with no problems.

If getting up is a problem, then they need to get to sleep earlier, like any of us.

WendyWeber · 17/04/2008 23:39

Until 2 weeks ago DS2 did a morning paper round which required him to get up at about 7am, so he was never late for school at least.

He has given that up though and is about to start a Saturday job; I am hoping he will still get up in good time for school (he has been in trouble a lot, even without that, the last few weeks) but am not optimistic...

Thing is blinkingnora, there's quite a big difference between 11-12 year olds and 14-15 year olds. They grow up so much in those few years. It's like having a young adult rather than a kid. But they are still kids so you have to be the parent and enforce some bedtime rules. He does get up ok (with a bit of help) but at that age, they'll sleep all day even if they've had an early night. I think 10:30 is plenty late enough, but even if he goes to bed and light out at 10:30 he doesn't go to sleep.

I agree big difference.
and my nephews are a similar age and they would spend till 2 am playing on their computers when they should be asleep if dear sis didn't take the power cord out each night.

Sometimes physical exhaustion is the best reason to sleep I find.

My time will come I am sure. I have one good sleeper and one bad sleeper now.

lilolilmanchester · 17/04/2008 23:54

yes, it's a funny age so you can see why they find it so frustrating. In some ways they are very grown up and in others not - liek you say, they'd be up all night if not chased to bed. Will be interested to see what DD's like at that age. She's 10 and will kiss us goodnight - and often go straight to bed (at 8 - 8:30). Not always, and I bet it won't last!

I have to take mine up and tuckthemin so to speak, I expect to be doing it when they are 20 whether they like it or not!

juuule · 18/04/2008 07:43

15yo (y10)somewhere between 10 and 12.
16yo (college) somewhere between 9 and 10:30.

lilolilmanchester · 18/04/2008 09:55

really Juuule? How interesting. Different genders or the same?

OP posts:
juuule · 18/04/2008 10:03

DS 15yo.
DD 16yo.
I'm not sure that gender makes a difference, though. My eldest ds also used to take himself off to bed reasonably early until he left home for uni and my 13yo is looking like she might be a night owl.

lilolilmanchester · 18/04/2008 10:14

I guess you shouldn't generalise about gender, it's just that most of my friends' DDs go to bed at a lot more reasonable time than the boys. Just wondered if there was some reason for that, or maybe it is just too much of a generalisation.

Lilo - it might last with your dd. It might. 16yo dd that I'm talking about has always been this way with her bedtime routine. She will stay up to watch a film or if she goes out with friends occassionally but after that she slips easily back into looking to go to bed some time 9/10:30.

fifitinkerbell · 18/04/2008 10:24

My DS2 is 10 goes to bed half 8 reads until 9 & is always up before 7

DS1 is 14 goes up to his room about 9 - 9.30 but can still be awake a 11.45 but always up for his paper round.

MrsWeasley · 18/04/2008 10:28

DD is nearly 13 and goes to bed at 9 (she will try to push it to 10). she then faffs about in bathroom for ages then reads for hours until I unplug her light.

cory · 18/04/2008 15:13

I used to go to bed at 11 at this age- though I did read until all sorts of hours.

mumeeee · 18/04/2008 18:31

DD3 16 is in year 11 is in bed by 10.12 on school nights but she sometimes reads until 10.45.

janeite · 18/04/2008 18:35

Dd1 13, dd2 10 - both go at 9.00, although the 10 yr old would be better at half eight I think.

I do worry how late some teenagers, especially those with GCSEs approaching, seem to go to bed. And those with computers in their room then seem to stay up watching DVDs and MSN ing for hours more, or at least some of the ones I teach do!

Milliways · 18/04/2008 20:47

DD just couldn't get to sleep before 10:30 or 11, and in the end I gave up as school work was not suffering. She always got up no problem on a school day but would sleep all morning at weekends.

Now year 12 she is often still working at 11pm (and was all through GCSE year)!

ShrinkingViolet · 18/04/2008 20:54

DD1 (Year 10) goes to bed anytime between 9 and 10 depending on how tired she is - she does need more than average amounts of sleep though and always has. She'll be awake on school days by around 7.30, weekends I wake her by 10. However she did manage a 3am bedtime the other week on a sleepover .

KatieScarlett2833 · 20/04/2008 01:29

10pm on school nights. At other times, when they like but always before me.

ajandjjmum · 23/04/2008 08:28

Ds 16 will go around 9.30/10, unless he is watching something on TV.

Dd 15 will go anytime from 8.30 (if she's tired) to 10.30.

They have to get up at 6.30 am, so late nights are really not a sensible option - they've learned that the hard way
