Daughter wants Mole on face removed - help !

minimees · 21/07/2024 09:41

My daughter (17) has a nasty dark brown mole on her face which she absolutely hates and wants it’s removed.
We have been to the doctors who have said it’s not a dangerous mole it’s more unsightly more then anything and it’s getting bigger and darker as she’s getting older.
The NHS won’t remove it as it’s cosmetic but she adamant she wants it removed.
mate has tried hiding it with makeup but it doesn’t cover it.
Can anybody recommend somewhere where I could take her for a consultation? I don’t mind paying but because it’s her face want to make sure they know what they are doing and will do a good job.

I had mine removed by laser - plastic surgeons can do this.

Newgirls · 21/07/2024 09:43

I had mine done at a beauty aesthetics place - some have mole removal training. You need a place that has lasers etc rather than just does facials etc

GoldFrame · 21/07/2024 09:46

I’d book an appointment with a dermatologist/plastic surgeon privately and take advice. There’s no way I’d get this done at an aesthetics clinic, unless one with a proper reputable consultant medic doing it

GlossyChipmonk · 21/07/2024 09:50

I had a face mole removed at the Spire hospital. Competent and straightforward (but was lucky to have private insurance at that point)

I was in my 30s before it was removed, which is done it before, so it’s great that your supportive of your daughter to get it removed now.

helleborus · 21/07/2024 09:51

Which area of the country are you in?

GlossyChipmonk · 21/07/2024 09:51

And I totally agree with @GoldFrame - qualified plastic surgeon/medic only especially for face mole.

Inthemosquitogarden · 21/07/2024 09:54

At my hospital the dermatologists get the plastic surgeons in for mole removal on the face ; which should suggest to you the level of expertise required for even “cosmetic” procedures. Please don’t go to an aesthetic clinic unless it is done by a plastic surgeon, or a dermatologist with a lot of experience in facial mole removal.

Look up your local private hospital and pick a plastic surgeon. Make sure said private surgeon also works in the NHS.

I'm sick of the NHS "cosmetic doesn't count" line, it makes me so angry. People get all kinds of treatments for all kinds of reasons, often self-inflicted, but if something's on your face it apparently doesn't matter!

I have a similar issue OP, I'm looking at the Bristol location of a clinic called Cosmediccs. The surgeon who works in Bristol, in particular, is apparently renowned but obviously do your own research; I haven't used him yet for financial reasons 😔

The clinic is in Bristol but the London location handles bookings. Again, I repeat that it's the surgeon in Bristol who has been recommended to me. I'll try and remember his name.

Update: it's Dr Matthew Ives

Good on you @minimees for helping your daughter. I'm in my forties and wish I'd been able to have treatment whilst young.

Your DD needs to see a specialist in mole removal/plastic surgery. She needs to be taken through the options and possible outcomes.

My DD had a mole removed in her early 20s on medical advice. The surgeon was very clear about scarring and healing. The area removed was quite large and had several stitches. Had she not been warned it could have been a nasty shock. Scar has faded.

PeachPairPlum · 21/07/2024 21:16

Dd also had a similar mole removed aged about 17 or 18 , and we picked a dermalogist at a local private hospital.

PeachPairPlum · 21/07/2024 21:19

The place was part of the Spire group that a pp mentioned.

Luluem · 21/07/2024 21:21

Definitely plastic surgeon, and one who either had extensive NHS experience or was still there alongside private practice. My medic father wouldn’t let me have a mole removed from even my leg by anyone other than a plastic surgeon, and any face stitches etc have always had to have them too. Best of luck to your DD!

Princesspollyyy · 21/07/2024 21:29

I had a mole on my face removed a couple of years ago, it was done at a local reputable beauty aesthetics place and was done with a diathermy needle. It cost £200 and I am absolutely thrilled with the results.

jazzyBBBB · 21/07/2024 21:31

As you are in Herefordshire look at So Aesthetics in Worcester - I had several
Removed by the doctor there.

Hadalifeonce · 21/07/2024 21:35

Recently, DD had a consultation with a private plastic surgeon, he used to also work with the NHS. He gave her a lot of useful information and advised to have it removed later in the year to avoid sunshine.

My DP had a mole removed at one of these places too. They did an absolutely amazing job! You now wouldn't know it was ever there.

Tel12 · 21/07/2024 21:39

Had mine removed privately, basically a GP who undertook minor surgery. I just Googled. Cost about £250

Wellthisisterrible · 21/07/2024 21:42

Spire healthcare based at South Bank hospital in Worcester.
They have a website with all treatments available and the qualifications/experience of the doctors listed.

audweb · 21/07/2024 21:46

I had mine removed by the NHS. The GP was helpful, and expressed “concern” that it had changed in shape/size and so they did it. I know that bypassed the cosmetic route which was great for me. Worth a chat?

i have no recommendations but just to say it was a simple procedure and no one would know I even had one removed from my face. I almost forget that I even had one my face.

ButtSurgery · 21/07/2024 21:50

I've had moles removed by a nurse who does aesthetics. Essentially it's burned off with a small electrical device. I've also had thread veins on my nose zapped.

No scarring but I'd have been happier with a scar rather than the moles!

OrangeBlossom28 · 21/07/2024 21:50

There's a brilliant dermatologist called Dr Rajpar in Birmingham at Midland Skin. He did MOHS surgery to remove my DH's BCC. Well worth going to if you don't mind travelling that far.

May not work currently. I have a very large growth on my boob. GP is happy it's benign (probably is tbh) but it horrifies me and my mum has just finished treatment for breast cancer. They won't remove it, nor refer on.

There is no minor surgery clinic at my GP surgery anymore due to costs. It'll cost me £1k to have this removed privately and sent to histology. The nurse I previously mentioned in a post said she won't touch it in that location and wants me to see a surgeon.

Sunshineandsparklesforever · 23/07/2024 10:25

Aw bless her, have you looked into aesthetic services as some do mole removal, it doesn’t have to be a hospital or consultant prices
