11 year old DD just got her period for the first time and we are going on holiday in 4 weeks

So it looks like she may get her period whilst we are abroad. :(

She has handled her first cycle like a little super star but I'm really worried she will get her period whilst on holiday. (As it's her first we have non idea of cycle.length etc.) At 11 she's obviously using pads and I we haven't even discussed tampons yet as she is so young. Is there anything that would allow her to swim and enjoy all the usual fun of a holiday?

Sorry I've got to laugh , said no one ever before .

BrendaSmall · 03/05/2024 19:45

I used tampons from my very first period at the age of 10, I was also very regular from the go!
My sister thought, she had her first one at 16, and then didn’t get one until she was nearly 18!
shes had nothing but trouble in that department even struggled to get pregnant
Were twins too!

Knackeredmommy · 03/05/2024 19:58

You can get period swimsuits, got one from Primark yesterday.

Piccalillies · 03/05/2024 20:12

Modibodi teen period swimwear and teen period pants for when not swimming are a game changer. They have made periods so much easier for my daughter.

Newbeginingssameoldshite · 03/05/2024 20:14

Thank you everyone for all your suggestions. I'm going to look at the period swimwear. Hopefully we won't need it but obviously want to be prepared. Her first flow was quite heavy bless her. Will also remember pain killers for cramps too. Oh it sucks to be woman sometimes! 👩

Am I the only adult that uses period pants?

Smartiepants79 · 03/05/2024 21:00

I use period pants except for the very heaviest days.

wompwomp · 03/05/2024 21:01

thirtyseven37 · 03/05/2024 17:46

How do period swim pants stop period blood from going into the water?

I have no idea. I mean no swimwear has legs that hermetically seal around the leg holes. If you rinse the blood out of them when you wash them I have no idea how the blood isn't rinsed out of them whilst you swim.

goldenretrievermum5 · 03/05/2024 21:03

Echoing other posters - I’d be really surprised if she’s regular from the start, more than likely it will be a few months until she has another period (for DD it was nearly a year!) but always best to be prepared just in case

You can get medication to delay a period; you may not want to for an 11 year old and not sure what the minimum age is but just thought I’d mention it.

Do not do this

Nubnut · 03/05/2024 21:06

Why would you rule out tampons because she’s young?
they’re the least embarrassing option for young sensitive souls

Octomama · 03/05/2024 21:06

@Nubnut why? If you have some kind of medical knowledge about this please elaborate

A lot of young girls find them hard to use, certainly for DD and her friends the vast majority were well into their teens before they started using tampons instead of pads

Periods are not embarrassing, nor are young girls ‘sensitive souls’. Some very misogynistic language there

Octomama · 03/05/2024 21:15

@Newbeginingssameoldshite I would speak to her GP about delaying her period. My DD was not much older when given a prescription for this, why should the poor girl have her holiday ruined unnecessarily?

bluetopazlove · 03/05/2024 21:21

I must admit I never found tampons hard to use . I started my periods early 80s , school morning and was sent off to school wearing a Dr White .Worst thing/best ever . Came home from school and spent lunch time training myself to insert tampon . Best thing ever , do Dr Whites even exist ? They were the worst ever .

atlaz · 03/05/2024 21:22

I was also very regular from the go!

Me too, I'd clung on to the hope I might not get another one for 6 months...

I've also tried period swimwear in the bath, it doesn't work for me

AperolWhore · 03/05/2024 21:25

I’d look at period delay tablets, any accident will have to close the pool and she’ll be utterly mortified

Nubnut · 03/05/2024 21:25

Octomama · 03/05/2024 21:06

Yes, because adolescence is not the time to start messing around with hormones when your body is developing.
my medical knowledge on this matter comes from reading a book about periods recently by Dr Lara Briden

Like you, I know they are not embarrassing and don’t find them so myself aged 33.
However, many teenagers find parts of having them embarassing, like when your pad slips and you get a dark patch on your jeans. It just is embarrassing.
I was being a bit ironic and patronising towards teenagers, not misogynistic.

I cannot believe people are giving this advice, it’s so irresponsible.
To put your child on hormonal medication, for a holiday.
no no no.

Octomama · 03/05/2024 21:38

Yes, because adolescence is not the time to start messing around with hormones when your body is developing

It is one delayed period. What do you actually think is going to happen? I hate the way girls are pressured to endure so much because it is "natural" What positive function do periods actually have? They are nothing but a side effect of not having conceived. Let's be honest if it were men who had periods they would have ceased to exist decades ago.

The child can enjoy her holiday, go swimming, free from horrible cramps and a sore body, thanks to modern medicine. Her periods will return to normal within a couple of cycles

FawnFrenchieMum · 03/05/2024 21:38

As everyone else has said period swim wear is perfect.
Everyone has said that her period might not be regular to start with, they might not but my DD started at 10 and was monthly from day 1.

Octomama · 03/05/2024 21:41

Again @Nubnut you have no medical training beyond the book you've just read so stop being so directive, you are the one being irresponsible in providing inaccurate information. Let the GP
who has seven years of training be the one who advises on the appropriateness of prescription medication

I would be interested if this thread got moved to the infertility board to see what posters would say about the issue there. And what they would tell you about GPs precious seven years of training and how much knowledge they have on the whole about cycles.

SoupDragon · 03/05/2024 21:48

I think Norethisterone is a no go. You have to take it 3 days before you're due and you'll have no idea when she is due given she's only just started.
