Should we delay period or risk it??

Typical. First hol abroad, we even arranged it so she wouldn't have her period and this month it's abit late. We fly on Sun, if it comes today then the worse will be over, she said only day 1 and 2 are heavy and more manageable afterwards. We are only going for 4 days, 5 nights so wouldn't want it to arrive on the 1st day of holiday. I've ordered some period swimwear which is due to arrive today and I have bought some tampons to try but she's never used them before. The other option would be to try some medication to try and delay it.....but have read it can really mess with things afterwards, until now her periods have been pretty good, no pain, not particularly heavy. Thoughts please?

Similar position to the Op. We got the tablets for DD (14). Also taking period swimwear as a back up.

No idea why the Op was given such a hard time. DD spends hours swimming - it's the best part of the holiday for her.

I don't think it's martyrdom. I think it's some people who just don't realise that periods are quite different for different people. The internet wasn't about when I was a teenager, I had no idea until I was quite a bit older that what I experienced wasn't universal. My mum and my sister suffered the same way so I thought it was normal.

Oh to have such light periods that you don't have to plan around them!
I order bullet proof tampons from Spain (or bring them home in box loads) which work with a very big pad as well but I actively avoid swimming even in these and definitely plan holidays life around them.
Op it's lovely that you are looking into how to minimise the stress that worrying over leaking would bring to your dd
Those of you saying visit the gp for help with heavy periods obviously haven't tried that - they don't care and won't help ime
Some people just have heavy periods and yes it is a natural thing and part of life but we don't have to like it, if planning around it makes life easier why wouldn't you?

Update. GP prescribed some tablets, dd happy with that. They may not work as could be too late but GP said got nothing to lose and she fan just stop taking if it does start. I'm thinking she could still continue taking and they'd be lighter anyway just for the holiday?!we also have some swimwear from Wuka so hopefully she will have a fab holiday!

Thanks! It's pretty much the highlight of the holiday plus its out first holiday abroad for 5 years and we are only going 5 nights. I think if wr were going for longer it would have been ok.

I still run two packs of contraceptive pills together if I'm going on holiday. Why would I mess round having cramps, fiddling with tampons and worrying about whether or not I'm going to bleed on someone else's sheets if I could just... Not?

Seems perfectly sensible to me OP, hope you have a lovely holiday and your DD does too.

Yes, exactly. I've had the Mirena for a long time so don't have to think about it anymore, only get spotting but I'd be exactly the same.

Can anyone answer this. If her period does come anyway whilst taking these as we may have left it too late, can she continue taking them anyway, are they likely to make it lighter anyway?

Ditto. Mine are a big event so I feel for your daughter. (I still have a traumatic flashback to discovering the loos in the forum in Rome were out of loo paper when I really needed to use them for that reason). Another option is tranexamic acid - you take it at the heaviest point and it reduces the flow substantially.

I'd always been saving mine for the worst times but my GP took the piss and said she prescribes it for teenagers so it really wasn't a big deal to take it. Might be also worth investigating for the future.

OP I’m not sure how it would work for your DD but the first time I was ever prescribed norethisterone was to stop a horrible heavy period that I was in the middle of. The GP was concerned I was bleeding too much and the pills did dry up the flow within a day or two - but it came back as soon as I stopped taking them. So I would guess they would at least make her flow lighter.

It depends how sensitive she is to progesterone - which you may not have any way to know yet.

I will also add that I’ve started taking norethisterone when my period was overdue/forgotten doses before and been fine on holiday- it still worked because I guess I’m very sensitive to it. So it may work for your DD.

I found it helpful in my 20s when I was taught how to know when I ovulated. The time between ovulation and your period is pretty consistent, it’s the first part of your cycle that varies. So it helped me know when to predict my period better in the short term.

I really hope it works out and your DD can have a great holiday. You sound lovely, by the way.

This thread reminds me of when I was a young teen and went swimming in the sea despite being on my period and I looked around and saw my pad floating away in the sea 😂😂😂
But seriously I wouldn't give her medication over this it's not worth the side effects and she needs to learn to deal with her periods

Talkingtothetrees · 11/08/2023 21:55

If the swimwear has arrived why is it a drama? You need to teach your daughter to be at peace with her cycle and changes in her body not make it all a big panic and like it gets in the way. It is a beautiful, wonderful thing and all part of the female body and its fantastic abilities.

Oh come on, how tone deaf can you be? There is nothing beautiful and wonderful about periods for a lot of women. Just read the thread you're on for plenty of examples.

Just get her some tampax 🤷🏻‍♀️.

😂😂😂😂😂

It’s actually a pain in the arse for many women and something that causes a lot of pain, discomfort and mess and can sometimes have a huge, negative impact on a woman’s life.

There is nothing beautiful and wonderful about periods….it’s often just a shitty part of womanhood with many downsides that we have to endure 40+ years.

Yeah, sure. Bleeding through to my chair in a 3 hour A-level is a beautiful, wonderful thing I could really have done without.

If I could have delayed periods during my teenage summer holidays I would have done so without a second thought.

How on earth does period swimwear work? Surely it's the same as washing it, doesn't the blood still come out? I'm very intrigued!!
