What do your 15 year old boys eat in a day?

I'd like to get an idea of what's within the range of normal. So if anyone doesn't mind sharing. Breakfast lunch dinner, snacks. Please be honest if you could, not the edited healthy version.

I'm asking because I could do with a bit of perspective and also hopefully get some ideas.

I'm struggling to fill ds up but getting him to eat decent, filling food is difficult. I know the right things for him to eat but he's constantly taking everyone else's snack type food and nothing I've tried will stop him doing it.

There's a huge backstory of possible disordered eating. I don't want to go into explaining g it all because it's long winded.

Could you pack more protein into his breakfast and lunches?
perhaps some nuts/seeds/Greek yogurt on his weetabix?
or depending on preference more meat/a cooked egg with his lunch. We’re veggie so I have to be a bit more creative. Sometimes we make soups with added lentils/beans which are filling.

Mummydoctor · 23/03/2023 19:59

I agree that learning about food groups and what constitutes a healthy meal/day of eating is quite important, particularly if they do a lot of sports. Then hopefully they can make their own healthier choices.

Clingthefilm · 23/03/2023 19:59

Cross posted with your latest update! If he's taking cake bars to school and you have a limited amount in the house, I'd divvy up the cakes. If he eats it all in one go, that's his hone and he can't go sneaking other people's.

My son used to take all the cakes, but swapped to peanut butter sandwiches when I split them cakes between us.

HPD76 · 23/03/2023 20:00

I have a 12 year old who hit puberty early, so is currently eating me out of house and home.
Breakfast- several slices of toast/crumpets/packets of waffles
Lunch- if he’s at school, then a slice of pizza because he is “too busy to eat”, if he’s at home, several sandwiches, crisps or pasties, pot noodles etc.
After school- I try and limit this to a sandwich, but he’s usually ravenous, so it could be a couple of butties and a pot noodle, flapjacks, anything he can get his hands on.
Dinner- I give him one large adult portion of whatever we eat, so risotto or pasta or whatever and he will always have a full second portion, sometimes a third huge portion and then pudding.

if I ate like that, I’d be the size of a house, but he’s skinny and tall and you can see his ribs. He is costing me a fortune.

Hamserfan · 23/03/2023 20:03

Breakfast 4 weetabix with honey and semi skimmed milk.
Lunch on a school day wrap with chicken, nutella or chorizo. Red pepper slices and cucumber slice. Chocolate biscuit like club or tunnocks.
Snacks sometimes buys biscuits in school often has something like oreos when arriving home.
Dinner usual family dinner but at twice or three times what I will eat. Very large bowl of pasta with seven home made meatballs and 12 pizza express doughballs and a mountain of parmesan tonight.
At christmas he had one of our large denby plates for most of his food and one of the large salad plates for the roasties and yorkshires that couldnt be accomodated on the main plate!

Hamserfan · 23/03/2023 20:04

Oh yes he often has a steamed pudding or a bowl of rice pudding too whrn we only eat pudding for special sunday lunches birthdays etc

Chilloutsnow · 23/03/2023 20:04

My 13 year old son knows exactly what foods constitute as healthy and unhealthy. Does he care? Not really. I think he does eat too much sugar and it would concern me if he wasn’t really slim, but good luck to anyone trying to monitor that in adolescence. I think in terms of battles I’m willing to let that one slide. I just make sure he gets plenty of protein, calcium and veg and the rest is up to him.

Oblomov23 · 23/03/2023 20:16

Everyone's else's lists are probably kind of irrelevant. Your son is very slim. He's not eating that much, from what I've read.
Both my boys eat tonnes of healthy stuff. Ds2 also eats tonnes of unhealthy snacks aswell, plays tonnes of football.

Maybe more fruit, more carbs, more protein?

IsaiditwasLighthearted · 23/03/2023 20:17

OP that seems very normal and standard for a teen of that age. Mines a year older, here's a typical day:

B either a big bowl of cereal or toast with peanut butter. Apple juice. Might also grab a banana if he has time. At the weekend we often have a big cooked breakfast one of the days.

S will either take a cereal bar with him or buy something like a small bacon bap at the school snack bar.

L often a panini or toastie with cheese/veg or the canteen hot main meal of the day. Tub of carrot sticks or pack of grapes. Once or twice a week he will have chocolate milk or a smoothie with it, or he might have a muffin/brownie. Depends how his weekly spend on his school card is going.

S always seems to be ravenous when he gets in from school so will often have toast or crackers/oatcakes with cheese or more peanut butter or Nutella/cheese sandwich/couple of slices of chicken or ham/whatever he finds in the fridge. Plus often a couple of biscuits or small choc bar or whatever is in the treat cupboard. I will remind him there's fruit n veg but it's carbs carbs carbs at this point in the day

D usual family meal with at least 2 veg and a bigger helping of protein and carbs than us

S sometimes he will have a late evening snack but not always. Often some more crackers with cheese and fruit. Or Greek yoghurt with whatever is around - fruit/honey/granola. Something super quick and easy. Pretty sure he may have a couple more biscuits too.

Walks to and from school every day, plays a sport twice a week and is often out on weekends being active too. Lanky and no weight issues at all.

FatGirlSwim · 23/03/2023 20:20

My 15yo ds eats flippin’ loads. He is tall and very slim. He eats a whole quiche for a snack.

I couldn’t tell you exactly what he eats because I don’t know, I don’t keep tabs on it and I honestly think we shouldn’t by that age. I do have a vague idea because I buy the food but I do not know how many snacks he has or what he buys outside the house:

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 23/03/2023 20:20

Basically everything they can find. Mother to two teen DS 18 (6' 4") and 16 (6' 2"). Both really slim and they NEVER STOP EATING.

BatFaceOwl · 23/03/2023 20:20

Mine is 16 and a typical day would be ..

Hot chicken wrap, cashew nuts, hot chocolate, chopped apple

Hot pasta dish if at home, sandwich, crisps, chocolate at school

Potato waffles with cheese or toast with peanut butter, various snacks. Maybe beans on toast or a fish finger bagel. This is after school

Then dinner of chicken/ cottage pie etc etc with veg and potato

Ice cream, mixed nuts, crisps, fruit, raw carrots

So he eats a lot. He's 6 foot and very slim at 10 stone. Typical teen boy really

lunar1 · 23/03/2023 20:29

My 14 year old doesn't stop eating, he is a swimmer and is built like one.

Breakfast he will make eggs on toast and grab smoked salmon from the fridge, a banana, coffee and water.

Lunch, whatever school dinners are that day

When he gets in from school he raids the fruit bowl, heats up yesterdays leftovers, then snacks until our evening meal. If he's swimming before school he takes a second breakfast to eat when he finishes.

He definitely has more sweets than he should in the evening, chocolate isn't an issue as he can't have dairy.

Cas112 · 23/03/2023 20:37

How do you not know that teenage boys eat EVERYTHING

lljkk · 23/03/2023 20:46

57 kg. Food is almost the exact same every day

1st breakfast: 2 brioche rolls, 1 sausage roll
(9 mile paperound)
2nd breakfast: big bowl porridge with sugar
(6 mile school commute /or/ park run)
lunch: bag of crisps, 1 ham sandwich, 1 yoyo
(6 mile school commute)
after school: more biscuits
(PGing often)
supper: dinner plate of 'roast' type meal, veg, mountain of spuds
(PGing or cadets)
pudding: 4-5 biscuits, 1 cup of milk

Twobigsapphires · 23/03/2023 21:05

My ds is 15. Average build, reasonably active (walks home from school, does GCSE PE and extra curricular sports hobby). Typical day:
Breakfast - 3 weetabix or large bowl of shreddies.
cereal bar for snack. He’s usually buys a cake or cookie from the school canteen too.
lunch is usually either 2x ham rolls or a pasta pot.
When he comes home from school he’ll have a couple of biscuits and some fruit.
dinner is usual stuff, meat and potatoes and veg type thing, pasta bake, chicken wraps etc. some times he’ll have a cake bar for pudding. Occasionally he’ll have a yogurt or fruit later in the evening.

weekends he’ll make himself a cooked breakfast . Then usually either a pot noodle or a baguette for lunch. Normal dinner and then May have some crisps as a snack in the evening.

Hoolihan · 23/03/2023 21:10

Human dustbin, three normal meals (cereal/sandwich/family dinner) supplemented by whole tubes of Pringles, family size bags of Werthers Original, large bottles of coke, endless cereal, instant noodles, instant porridge, cheese, carrots, biscuits. Messy and expensive homemade smoothies, gallons of milk, sugary tea. Topped off with McDonalds and Dominoes. I despair.

jays · 23/03/2023 21:13

18 now and away from home but can tell you a typical day at 15.

breakfast either 1. Two slices of seeded bread toasted with two eggs scrambled and a tomato or 2. Bowl of sugar free granola with blueberries and strawberries and green yogurt.

lunch : a wholewheat wrap with chargrilled chicken, lettuce, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers and olives and some crisps

dinner : fajitas, salmon, rice and veg, Cajon chicken on burger buns … - full pack from M&S or a roast dinner or curry with loads of protein and some chocolate, olives or ice lollies here or there. Sometimes a crumpet or pancake at night or some nuts and raisins or cheese on toast for supper

jays · 23/03/2023 21:17

To add…. He has a great build, lean with good muscle and good energy. It’s so hard knowing what to feed them… mine was tiny at 15 and my family were liking at me like it was my fault! He’s 6’ 2” now and I done nothing different!

waterlego · 23/03/2023 21:22

A typical day for my almost 15 year-old DS would be:

Breakfast: big bowl of cereal, often with a further half pint of milk as a drink.

Snack (at school): pizza slice

Lunch (school): panini and a cake or flapjack. (He occasionally has a proper cooked dinner there, eg curry.)

After-school snack: leftovers from the previous night’s dinner, or toast or sandwich. More milk.

Dinner: decent size portion of whatever we’re having (curry/chilli/fajitas/roast/stew etc)

Pre-bed snack: a few Weetabix and a yoghurt or a protein shake/smoothie. Often more milk.

Yes, he eats a lot and a lot of it is carby. Plus he eats sweets a few times a week. But he does eat decent amounts of veg in/with his dinner though, and puts plenty of fruit in his smoothies. He’s very slim and active.

BramleyAppleHotCrossBun · 23/03/2023 21:30

DS is 15 next week. A typical day tends to look like:

Breakfast - toasted bagel with cream cheese/breakfast biscuit/croissant. He’s not usually very hungry first thing.
Lunch (taken to school from home) - Sandwich/Roll/Soup/Leftovers/Quiche etc, with crisps, fruit, sweet treat & cheese/other form of protein such as pepperami.
After school snack - Coffee (obsessed with that beanies flavoured stuff) and anything he can find that goes in the toaster. Could be toast (2 slices), 2 bagels, crumpets, muffins, fruit bread, hot cross bun etc.
Late afternoon snack - biscuit(s), more coffee, piece of fruit.
Dinner - adult portion of whatever is cooked. He eats almost everything, doesn’t like mashed potato or beans. Loves pasta and anything spicy. Also currently obsessed with adding sriracha to everything.
Evening snack - preferably more toast. If not, raiding the cupboards for crisps.

He is 5’10” and so, so slim. Very active, walks a lot, does sport every day at school.

Jenjen21 · 23/03/2023 21:38

Pretty much beige diet for my DS 15, has always been like this. Will eat strawberries, raw carrot and cucumber so I get these into him most days. Otherwise will eat toast till it comes out of his ears, or a variation of our dinner. I give him vitimans also as he def does get enough...

FunnysInLaJardin · 23/03/2023 21:42

My 13 yo and 17 yo eat pretty much the same. Cereal or toast for breakfast, sandwich, sausage roll, crisps and cereal bar for lunch and dinner which was quiche, wedges and peas tonight. Last night it was Thai curry, rice and beans.

They rarely snack, although DS1 who is 17 and doesn't always have breakfast/lunch will often make eggs or granola for an afternoon snack

BakewellGin1 · 23/03/2023 21:53
