What time do your kids go to bed?

Basically that...

My 11 year old gets in bed anywhere between 10 and 10.30.

My 15 year old tries to push for nearer 11pm. He reckons his mates are all up til later.

This is school term time I'm talking about.

Bedtimes stay pretty similar most nights. Some mornings they are fine and awake before the alarm. Sometimes they are grumpy and tired.

Really not sure what the correct bedtimes should be to be honest. They both stay up til around 11ish on weekends and in the holidays.

Opinion pls. And please be gentle with me... I honestly can't tell if most will say its fine or I'm gonna get ripped to pieces 🤔

13 year old gets ready and reads in bed by 9pm, lights off between 9.20-9.40.
10 year old in bed by 8.30, reads lights off at 9pm.

I’m always amazed on threads about bedtimes that people only compare time of going to bed and not the time that they need to be up at in the morning.

familyissues12345 · 27/01/2023 09:20

14 year old is meant to go to bed at 10, but he's slowly pushing that back and is now showering at 10, so into bed at 10.30ish. I wouldn't generally mind, his big brother was going to bed 10.30/11 by this age, but DS2 isn't a great sleeper (has to take medication to fall asleep) so the later to bed, the much later he falls asleep..

MrsMariaReynolds · 27/01/2023 09:22

DS (15) is meant to be lights out by 10:15 on school nights. Anything goes on weekends, but he's rarely up past midnight.

I have 13 and 15 year olds. Both go to bed at about 10 week nights. We ask them to get ready anytime from 9.30 though as it seems to take them FOREVER to just have a wee, brush teeth and actually get into bed.

I'm so glad you posted this. My DS (13) takes AGES to do anything. Drives me flipping mad!

Gymtok · 27/01/2023 09:39

There was a thread like this recently and loads of people were saying they're 11/12 year olds were in bed for 8pm. I couldn't believe it.
My ds 13 (year 8) goes to bed at 10 on a school night.

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 27/01/2023 09:51

My 9 year old goes to bed at 9.30. She can't go to sleep before, she is the first to wake up in the mornings.
However at her age my eldest was in bed for 8 as she needed her sleep.

My 15 year old goes to sleep when she wants with the condition she gets up in the morning. She usually goes go sleep around 10.30. There are some nights it will be earlier and some later.

They are all up no later than 7am on a weekday.

The rule in our home as soon as youngest goes to bed (7pm) all guitars are put down, music is stopped unless through headphones and calls to friends are also stopped.

warmlights · 27/01/2023 12:45

About the same as you OP, can’t force them to sleep. They are both in bedrooms at 10 but potter around for ages, we go to bed before them. Even my 9 year old (who we put down at 8.30) only drifts off at 10pm. Mornings are hard though.

inigomontoyahwillcox · 27/01/2023 12:51

14yo goes to bed at 10 on weeknights, although she eeks it out as long as she can (suddenly wants "mummy cuddles" or realises she hasn't packed her schoolbag/done that very important thing).

Tunnocks2022 · 27/01/2023 13:26

11 year old - lights out around 9.15pm after time in bed reading/audible. 13 year old with adhd is still haranguing me over Alexa from his room at 11.30pm some nights, and I am wrecked.

Severntrent · 27/01/2023 13:36

14 year old goes upstairs about 9pm or 9.30, she's asleep about 10ish.
11 year old in bed by 8.30, reads asleep before 9.
But we all like sleep!
Up at 7ish

Sorry should have given morning routine for context. They get up about 7.30/7.40 and leave for school at 8.20. Some mornings they are already up when I call them, sometimes I have to wake them up.

OMG same! Can literally take an hour to do the smallest things! Or they go to brush teeth but forget and do something completely different!

DS7 - 8.30pm, generally out like a light.
DS11 - 9.00pm but reads for a while and has a special playlist to help him relax in bed.

Dinner at 6.30pm, maybe nearer 7 if husband is late.

Both boys struggle to get up in the morning, I usually drag them out of bed by 7.15. At least they’re starting to sleep in at the weekends.

Thanks for all the opinions. Me and DH don't need much sleep, both go to bed at midnight most nights and up at 6.30/7 everyday. Don't lie in much on weekends either. My sis in law is in bed every night by 9.30! People's different sleeping patterns fascinate me lol. I suppose the kids bedtimes flow with how late the parent go to bed too... couldn't imagine getting in bed at 10 and leaving my kids up and about 😅

Why would you? Surely you want some couple time? I would say 8:30/9pm reasonable for an 11 year old on a school night. Your 15 will have school & exams too this year surely, so 10pm, with lights out by 10:30pm seems reasonable? Gives you 2 hours of guaranteed couple time a night too.

IhearyouClemFandango · 28/01/2023 20:52

12 yr old in bed for 2130 on a school night, 2200 on weekends.

10 yr old, 2030 school night, 2100ish weekend.

5 yr old around 7ish.

gogohmm · 28/01/2023 20:52

Mine were in bed by 9 at the younger age. 10 at 15. We ate around 7pm

AlwaysTheGoodGirl · 30/01/2023 12:24

DS11 is never in bed before 11pm, and DS15 nearer midnight. I know that's late, but they're just not tired before that. I tend to almost keep them up by doing stuff with them till quite late - we'll play on the keyboard, play games, go out for a walk at 9pm etc, and then get on with bedtime jobs until it's late again. I did the same when I was a kid, no set bedtimes and up quite late watching tv or just chatting with my mum, and I love that they enjoy doing that with me. They're both fine getting up for school, so I'm not too worried about it. I find it quite surprising when I see other comments about teens being in bed for 10pm or even earlier!

MaverickGooseGoose · 30/01/2023 12:26

11 year old DTs are upstairs at 830 during the week on non activity nights, lights out at 9.15. they have to get up at 6am.

Weekends they can push to 10ish but usually go up before out of choice.

Haha, yep same. I hope at some point his brain will 'switch on' but no evidence of that yet...

W0tnow · 30/01/2023 17:24

They take themselves off to bed at 10 ish. 17 year old is an early riser and is up at 5.30. Her 16 year old sister gets up at 7 ish. My son gets up at 7.45. They all leave for school just after 8.

MajorCarolDanvers · 30/01/2023 17:25

14 yo bed at 10pm and devices off. Can read as long as he wants.

10 yo bed at 9 no devices and lights off.

Both later at weekends

Withholdingvitalinfo · 30/01/2023 17:27

DD 16 in sixth form has shower at 10pm, dries hair and is in bed by 10.30pm. She’s not tired before then.

Weekend she pleases herself but is usually asleep before midnight.

Midnight OTOH is when 19 yr old DS night is just starting at Uni lol

GreenLeavesRustling · 30/01/2023 17:27

8 yo 8.30
13 yo 9.30, 10pm on non school nights

krne · 30/01/2023 18:03

I have an 11 yr old and a 13 yr old. Both go to bed at 10pm on week nights, 11yr old often up at 6.30am on her own, 13 yr old needs wakened at 7am most mornings. No bed time at weekends. Don't worry about what other people do and do what's right for you and your family. Everyone needs different amounts of sleep and every family has different lifestyles.
