Visits to family at Christmas when they are a long way away

We live a long way from family so if we go and visit at xmas we have to do a 10 hour drive each way. Ds is 14 and has expressed that he doesn’t really want to do this any more as he misses out on things at home with friends.

If you are in a similar situation, did your visits stop as your teens got older? I can’t imagine doing it with him when he’s at uni for example, so I’m guessing it’s just something that stops?

10ths travelling in a day? So you drive there and back in one day?

Wouldn't do that but would do it over a weekend to visit family, and we do that to see FIL who lives a 5/6hr drive from us.

No way would l expect my teenage sons to go, it would be pure torture, my family is very relaxed though and wouldn't expect them to.

We have a big family gathering 1-2 weeks before Christmas, its hard fitting it round work but works out well for teenagers social lives, and keeps relatives happy too.

Ten hours is a LONG way but could you go straight from school on a Friday, taking turns to drive, so if you leave at 3.30pm you get there by midnight? Stay until Sunday or even miss the Monday from school.

I read it as 10 hours each way

Oh yes, it does say each way..d'oh!

Would definitely pie that then, especially if they don't visit at other times.
