What's good starter make-up for teenage girls?

My DD has started experimenting - with my make up! So to put a stop to that I'm thinking of getting her sorted for the basics for Christmas. I'm looking for a brand that's good for young sensitive skin (she's 12). But if it can also be something a young teen would like so i don't waste money! All ideas / advice welcome!

Would she consider bare minerals? Not sure where young people stand on it but it's affordable, lovely, buildable coverage and minersl based so apparently better for the skin. I like the original, powder mineral but they do liquids too.- and blusher, lipgloss everything really.
For eyeshadow and lipgloss, maybe just get her a pallette in a brand she likes? I haven't a clue what's popular, maybe bperfect? Is bobby brown still going?- it's not going to make too much difference to skin, like the foundation will anyway- and always good offers in boots, 3 for 2 etc.
You could consider getting her a nice face wash set too?- encourage her to start good skincare routine. When I first used makeup, all we used was baby wipes! On our faces! Awful!

great ideas - thank you!

None

My daughter has just got some benefit makeup and loves it. It's not the cheapest but really lovely.
We went to boots and she had a little make over. She has got some concealer and primer rather than full foundation. It all seems very different now from when I was a teen!

Glossier?

JustFrustrated · 01/10/2022 19:07

Revolution is loved by the younger generation, and I can totally see why tbf.

It's really affordable, great packaging and not shit to skin.

donttalkaboutbookclub · 01/10/2022 19:10

Just came on to say, what a lovely idea. I have very fond memories of my dm buying me makeup for Xmas when I was 14 I think, and it was a really nice premium brand I wouldn't have bought myself, but also it was that approval I appreciated. It stands out as a lovely Xmas present when I forgotten many others!

weegiemum · 01/10/2022 19:25

My dd2 is a beauty therapy student so I just asked her! (She's 18).

She says for that age Revolution is good and also Boots have recently refreshed their 17 range which is good for younger girls.

She also says to try to stay away from foundation, focus on fancy eyes and nice lips as you don't want to start blocking pores with a heavy foundation. Tinted moisturiser if it's needed. Plus a really good skincare routine!

FishAndChipsForDinner · 01/10/2022 21:19

Elf, good prices (a little cheaper than revolution)
Vegan and cruelty free. There are multi sticks that donates lips and blush and the primer regularly goes viral on social media. The concealer is also super hydrating which is good for young skin.

tickticksnooze · 01/10/2022 21:30

Doesn't lots of makeup contain the same carcinogenic chemicals as teflon? For instance, anything waterproof.

She's 12. Her skin should be protected.

tickticksnooze · 01/10/2022 21:31

Why would a 12 year old "need" tinted moisturiser for goodness sake?

procrastinatingloser · 02/10/2022 03:18

And why does she need a 'really good skin care routine'
I'm 45 and use water and soap and Aveeno. That it. I'm pretty sure men don't need a 'really good skin care routine'
Such a shame how early some women are suggesting they need to adhere to these 'beauty rituals'

sashh · 02/10/2022 04:24

Is urban decay still a thing with teens? I know my nieces loved it.

It is, but it's very pricey for a starter brand.

And no she doesn't "need" any of these things including a skin care routine, but she's obviously indicated an interest and her mom wants to support that. What's wrong with that?

Also if you're wearing makeup, you really do need a good routine to ensure you're removing all trace of it from your skin.

If you look around the cyber pallette is really cheap. It's not super impactful though which is probably why.

I would go with revolution

gogohmm · 02/10/2022 14:16

@tickticksnooze

I take it you didn't have terrible acne!

gogohmm · 02/10/2022 14:19

@SpringCalling

Aldi have palettes of eye shadow and lip colours plus other products. They don't carry it all the time but I've bought it in November/December for my DD's who say it's good. I use their skin care products as do my DD's - they have moisturiser which has spf in it, not tinted but at 12 spf is more important

SparkyBlue · 04/10/2022 17:04

@SpringCalling my daughter has several bits from primark and I've been shocked at how nice they are. I actually ended up borrowing a few of the lipsticks. They also always have lovely make up bags and accessories which would make lovely gifts as well for her without breaking the bank. Also reusable washable make up removal pads and cloths are good gifts to add in. Moogoo is a lovely skincare brand for sensitive skin.

SpringCalling · 04/10/2022 17:34

Thanks so much for all these suggestions!

I have a 13 year old and would say

Revolution and Elf

sadly urban decay, bare minerals etc are all mummy makeup these days.

Yup I agree I think these things go in cycles - like super dry converse and superga are firmly parent wear now

Tabitha888 · 04/10/2022 17:44

NYX is really good price point and for sensitive skin. Different ranges etc there do gift sets at Christmas boots stock them

UWhatNow · 04/10/2022 17:46

Boots Natural Collection. And you get a lot for your money so quite a few items would make a nice Christmas box.

SirenSays · 04/10/2022 17:48

Colourpop is really popular with teens and it's great quality
