Teen DD had notice of insurance cancellation

My DD has had notice from her insurer that her car insurance policy is due to be cancelled in 7 days time. She has a black box and apparently has driven over the speed limit 3 times since 23/8. I don’t know the full details of how fast/where etc yet because she is not home and they won’t tell me.

She is going to ring them when she gets in. I just wondered if anyone else has had this and if so, is it possible to appeal the decision to cancel?

As PP have said, cancel the policy yourself, then you don't have to declare that you've had a policy cancelled (I have done this) and then get another policy set up to start today/the day you cancel.

Inastatus · 21/09/2022 12:28

@twoandcooplease - they haven’t cancelled yet she’s been given notice that it will end on 27/9. Most of the advice on here is to cancel before that date then she won’t have to declare anything. I think we will have to go with that option, I’m just nervous about not declaring the notice to cancel but fingers crossed it will be ok.

@HopScotchBump - thank you. It’s good to hear that you’ve done this and it was fine. Did you have to give a reason for cancellation?

@Inastatus no I just called and said I wanted to cancel (I hadn't declared a claim, thought it was 3 years history but it was 5, first I knew was a letter saying they would be cancelling my policy). That was two years ago and had no problems since.

Just give them a ring, say you'd like to cancel with immediate effect (it will be midnight of the day you cancel) and have something in place to start from that or the following day :)

Inastatus · 21/09/2022 12:35

@HopScotchBump - thanks so much 👍

Cancel immediately if you can. My ex had a policy cancelled because he made a mistake on the dates of a crash and hadn't updated his address so he didn't get the letters they sent in time (before everything was emailed) and it fucked his insurance for years.

The thing that would worry me would be that when you take out new insurance, they always want proof of ncd from the previous insurer. It may just flag something up. How long had your daughter held her current policy?

Inastatus · 21/09/2022 13:27

@JimmiChoux - she’s only had the policy 6 months so hasn’t built up any NCD yet.

Who is her insurance with?, all I know is insurance companies always ask for the details of the previous insurers and this isn't optional. I hope you can sort it for the best outcome.

Cancel her insurance before the insurance company does. Then leave it to her to get the bus until she finds a suitable and acceptable new policy.

@JimmiChoux - not yet, I lay awake half the night worrying about it.

@Workinghardeveryday - are you sure she won’t have to declare that she has had a notice of cancellation to any new insurer - it’s only necessary to say something if the policy has actually been cancelled? I’m worried about cancelling the current policy if the insurers then refuse to quote her for a new one because we’ve cancelled, then not being able to get her insured elsewhere! Does she need to give a reason for cancelling (obviously don’t want to say it’s to avoid having to declare cancelled policy). Thank you so much for any advice you can offer.

Ask for the new quote to be emailed over (this is now a firm quote). Accept the quote.

Straight away cancel the existing policy.
It states on a proposal form:
Has the driver had any motor insurance cancelled, refused or special terms applied in the last 5 years?

You haven’t!

Inastatus · 21/09/2022 14:41

DD just rang and cancelled and the woman she spoke to said she still has to declare it as being cancelled 😩 But technically we have cancelled it surely!!

100% you don't have to declare as long as you declare prior to them cancelling. The insurance company actually informed me of this myself.

Themselves.

Inastatus · 21/09/2022 15:43

@Workinghardeveryday - the insurers said they couldn’t email new quote straight away - it will be sent in the next few days. DD cancelled the policy but has been told she has to declare it as being cancelled by them.

@RetreatRetreatRetreat - thanks for the reassurance.

Never been asked for insurance details of previous provider only for Ncd if applicable

chocolateoranges33 · 21/09/2022 18:37

I'm just going through this right now with DC1.

We spoke to the insurers (tesco) & gave me permission to deal with it all.

Asked for the details of any incidents so we could learn how to improve the driving. They reviewed the data, found they'd incorrectly recorded speeding when it wasn't so they removed these.

That left 2 incidents of significant speeding (50 in a 30). When googling the roads the speeding occurred on, turns out their map system hasn't been updated for a while and the newly opened by pass nearby hasn't been loaded onto their system so it was recorded as speeding but wasn't. They are still sorting this out but it will be rectified.

Definitely make contact and ask for them to review the details & then share all incidents of concern so you can challenge if necessary. Its definitely been positive for us.

Good luck

I dont ever remember an insurance company asking this, I've had car insurance a long time and that's never come up. I do mine through comparison sites, the cancellation question is always asked but not who my current insurer is

If I'd cancelled the insurance I'd be confident in answering no when shopping round but I don't know for sure if that's technically correct.

It's an expensive lesson unfortunately

JimmiChoux · 21/09/2022 19:11

@AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair yes sorry I worded my previous post incorrectly. I have always been asked to send proof of no claims discount, not who my insurance was actually with.

I've not used a comparison site for car insurance before but I will from now on if it means I don't have to send proof of no claims.

It may depend on the insurer, the last time I changed I did need to speak to them to check something and asked about sending the proof of NCD and they said not necessary so either they can check themselves or they accepted me confirming. I have full NC so it might be that
