When do boys usually have their growth spurt?

DS2 is 12 years (13 in March) and hasn't yet had his growth spurt. He's around 155 cm and probably about 34 kilos so still a little boy really! He is growing normally but no signs of puberty yet. Just trying to remember when they start growing rapidly. DS1 is 14 and I think it was around now or at some point in year 8 that he starting growing rapidly (he's now 175 cm and still growing). DS2 is getting a bit worried as quite a few of his friends have started growing. Just wondering what the average age is for puberty to start in boys.

There's a really wide range. My ds is 15 and has really shot up over the past 18-24 months. Some of his yeargroup started growing in y6, some haven't had a growth spurt yet. I'd say the majority were between 13-15 though.

StopFeckingFaffing · 13/09/2022 13:59

IME boys vary a lot more than girls in this respect with some boys shooting up at about 11/12 and others much later at 15/16

There is often a pattern in families though

Vallmo47 · 13/09/2022 14:02

DS is 15 this year and only recently started growing a bit more rapidly, albeit at a steady pace, as he always has. His parents were both late bloomers and he hasn’t fully gone through puberty yet.
He’s obsessed with his height because there’s such focus on it in school. Such a shame - we all are what we are and what will be will be.

Dramalady52 · 13/09/2022 14:09

Used to work in schools and my observation is that the average is 13-14, but that is the average, not all hit puberty at the same. It was always funny to wave off lots of little kids at the end of year 9 and have a cohort of young men with deep voices and added height turn up for year 10 in September!

FunnysInLaJardin · 13/09/2022 14:10

My DS2 is 13 in February and is well into his growth spurt. He is about 5.7, so 170 cms and weighs around 50 kilos.

However he is now much taller than most of his friends even though he is younger than many of them. Lots are still like little boys.

DS1 who is now 16 started his growth spurt at about the same time and most of his friends were much later than him.

I don't think you need to worry too much yet!

HairyKitty · 13/09/2022 14:12

The normal range is very wide

Rebelmcstreettuff · 13/09/2022 14:12

13/14 for my DS2,grown a foot and lost lots of weight.

thewalrus · 13/09/2022 14:13

Generally happens late in our family - DH was 16; nephew was 15; DS is 14 and no sign of it yet. He's chest height with some of his friends, but has long expected that he'll do his growing late.

Among his friends, I'd say most, but not all, have done a lot of growing over the last year (they've just started Y9) - there are massive differences, some are 5 foot, some are 6 foot.

Our girls go early - I'd finished growing at 14 and I'm pretty sure DDs, aged 15 and 13, will turn out to be the same.

CatherinedeBourgh · 13/09/2022 14:14

It's hugely variable. Ds2 is the same age, and at 165cm, considerably taller than his friends the same age.

So while not surprising that some are taller, I would suspect his worry stems from the few who started early rather than the majority who didn't.

My brother didn't start growing until 15, he ended up taller than all his friends.

Deux · 13/09/2022 14:18

Girls tend to reach their adult height around 2 years after the start of their periods.

ime, boys vary widely. I think of the boys in my DS’s class in Y6 who were much taller than the rest and now everyone else has caught up and passed them. My DS is 18 and hasn’t finished growing. My nephew grew a couple of inches over his time at Uni.

LadyDanburysHat · 13/09/2022 14:29

It does vary loads. DS1 was 13-14 and shot up loads in one go, but then didn't grow any more and is now 19 and 5ft 9. DS2 is turning 15 this week and is only a little over 5ft. He hates it when playing sport particularly. I keep telling him his time will come.

Strange how it varies. My ds is 12 and is 2 inches taller than your son and doesn't stand out as exceptionally tall amongst his friends. Your ds would be one of the shorter ones amongst my ds and his peers.

hennybeans · 13/09/2022 14:42

My Ds had his largest growth spurt between about 13.5-14.5 years old.

hennybeans · 13/09/2022 14:42

My Ds had his largest growth spurt between about 13.5-14.5 years old.

Both of mine were on the later side, between 15 & 16. They seemed so little next to their friends, but have both ended up well over 6 feet (6'2 and 6'3). My mother, who's a GP, says that later growers tend to grow for longer and end up taller, if that's any reassurance.

Hastingsontheup · 13/09/2022 14:57

DS became taller than me between Yr 8 and Yr 9 so 13. I think he has finished growing now at 5'8" at 18

dingbat56 · 13/09/2022 15:00

DS1 is just 14 and 5fft 11. Huge growth in last 18months . His brother is 12.5 and about 5ft2 and feeling much the same as your youngest ! So your boy isn’t alone

Sunshineismyfriend · 13/09/2022 15:02

Mine is 13 and grew from about 11/12. He’s only 5ft 6 (although one of the tallest in his group) but worried he won’t grow any taller. He’s hoping he will grow a bit more but I’m not sure. Is it common to stop growing at 13?

DramaAlpaca · 13/09/2022 15:04

My three were between 13 & 14.

mondaytosunday · 13/09/2022 21:03

Mine never did - he was always one of the tallest in his class (also youngest). To his dismay a few boys caught up then passed him! I think 15/16 for late bloomers.

bert3400 · 13/09/2022 21:09

My DS is 13.5 and is still so small compared to his friends . He is growing but its nothing to get him excited about. We keep waiting and I'm sure it will happen any day now🤞

Cotswoldmama · 13/09/2022 21:25

I think it really, really varies! My nephew is 13 in a few weeks and is already taller than me I'm 5ft 5! Neither parent is that tall so I think it might slow down a bit now but who knows. I remember a boy at school being really tiny at 16 when he left and then bumping into him a few years later and he was huge! It must be hard to be one of the later ones to go through puberty.

PrincessSpanky · 13/09/2022 21:25

My 14y old started about 12. He is huge, 5f11 and just went into size 11 shoes. He's built like a rugby player too.

Shaves too Shock I 100% didn't think we'd be here so soon.

He's my wee baby, but not anymore either.

BringOnAutumn · 13/09/2022 21:33

My just 15 year old hasn’t started yet. Very difficult for him - especially during PE. Over the summer, his feet have gone from being tiny to larger than mine… (nothing else has changed- I don’t remember him ever having a 'spurt'). I hope for his sake that it’s true about late bloomers…

Passthecake30 · 14/09/2022 08:53

My 14.5yr old has recently started his I think, 1” growth in 3 months, 1 shoe size in the same time. He’s 5ft7 and 6stone atm. He said people tease him at school as his voice hasn’t broken yet. He’s on track to be the same height as me (6ft) so this year is going to be interesting!

My doctor friend describes boys as growing from the outside in - feet, hands, arms, legs, then spine, then broadening.
