Finding a weekend supermarket job (or similar) for 17 year old DS

I haven’t used my Mumsnet for a long time and I’m not sure I’m asking in the right place but some of you may have some pointers for me.

DS would like a little job whilst he’s at college. I’ve been on the lookout for a while just to see how much is around. I never see supermarkets advertising for jobs for students (he only wants a few hrs a week) but I know they exist. I feel like I’m missing how these jobs are advertised. In my day, we’d have sent a CV in to the store and things generally happened but I presume that’d get ignored these days? Does anyone have an insight/ experience with this. I’m thinking this is prime time for youngster recruitment now that they’ll be a losing a cohort to uni shortly. Thanks in advance

Don't send In a cv most is done online these days. Temp Christmas jobs will br coming up soon so he could maybe pick up some hours. Another way is to look at your local shopping centres social media or website they will advertise jobs. He might need to be flexible with his "few hours" though.

Mrsjayy · 07/09/2022 16:31

The supermarkets do advertise on their websites.

lickenchugget · 07/09/2022 16:32

Don’t know where you are, but here in the SE, almost every single shop, bar, supermarket, leisure centre etc has a sign saying they are hiring. Tell him to take a walk around town in person and have a word.

AverageJoan · 07/09/2022 16:35

Places usually advertise on their own websites, it's just taken me less than 2 minutes to find a 16.5 hour vacancy at my local Asda

Jobhuntingfun · 07/09/2022 16:40

Thank you- there’s definitely jobs around but he doesn’t want anymore than 8 hours and that is the trickier thing. He’s doing 4 A levels so unfortunately 12 or 15 hrs etc will just be too much.

I have lots of 17 yr olds working with me, ask in person if you want but there is a online application, there are plenty of shifts, evenings, weekends, holidays, they do like you to do a regular pattern, eg Saturday morning, Wednesday Evening etc then you can add extra shifts as needed.

Mrsjayy · 07/09/2022 16:47

Some places do 8/10 hours one of mine did 8 hours when they were at college was a Thursday night /Sunday so short hours are out there.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 07/09/2022 17:07

Round here lots of small hospitality places need staff, wouldn't you just walk round look in the windows for notices and go in and ask?

One day a week is a normal type of teen job ime

Jobhuntingfun · 07/09/2022 17:08

Thank you all, I will tell him to widen his search. At our local supermarket, there are kids getting jobs without them being advertised. This is the one place I signed up for job alerts from 😂. So I was curious if it’s because they know someone there or because they’ve sent in a speculative CV 🤷‍♀️

DS1 16 has just got 10ths a week at Booths. If you are in the NW they are worth looking at as they pay well for students. They advertise jobs on their own website and you need to apply online.

Good luck to your DS.

Mumski45 · 07/09/2022 17:33

10hrs not 10ths 🤷‍♀️

Framboisery · 07/09/2022 18:03

Most of those types of jobs round here are hospitality type jobs. Some you see ads in shop windows but some are on Indeed. Supermarket jobs allegedly pay the best. I've heard of teens putting their name down for waitrose so they're on a list for when jo

My dc has recently applied for a 5 hr a week job , a

Framboisery · 07/09/2022 18:04

...and am hoping they don't take her on and up it to 15 hours.

MaMisled · 07/09/2022 18:13

My DC and many of my neighbours DC all did useful stints washing up in local care homes. Short shifts of 2 to 5 hours, reasonable hourly rate and a great atmosphere with kitchen staff and care staff.

MaMisled · 07/09/2022 18:14

P.S always someone else wanting to cover for you for the extra money, should you want to skip a shift.

Rollergirl11 · 07/09/2022 18:17

DD has just started working 10.5 hours per week at Waitrose. She searched for vacancies and applied for a job on their website www.jlpjobs.com

mathanxiety · 07/09/2022 19:12

For starters, a teenage job hunter needs to do his own job hunting.

He needs to look online for application forms or ask at customer service desks.

You need to sit back and leave it all to him.

wizbit93 · 07/09/2022 19:32

Are there any garden centres near you? DS worked in one when he was 16. Minimum wage and he didn't really like it but he stuck it for 15 months!

AmberGer · 07/09/2022 19:36

He could try signing up to a recruitment agency too.

PlanetNormal · 07/09/2022 19:37

Hospitality are still crying out for staff. My nephew is doing his A levels. He has a Saturday job waiting tables at a local independent cafe. McDonalds is always a good option for students, too.

BertieBotts · 07/09/2022 19:40

Don't sign up for job alerts etc. Do suggest that he does this.

He needs to go into the shops and ask about their recruitment. Usually they will direct him to their website. He could also look on places like Indeed or in the local free newspaper.

GeorgeorRuth · 07/09/2022 19:43

B&Q is good for teenagers, small contracted hours are often available. They don't differentiate pay for youngsters, everyone gets paid the same shit for experienced staff . Our local one is very popular with the local grammar school pupils. My DD did a stint before university.

PeekAtYou · 07/09/2022 19:46

Dd was a barista and I see fast food and coffee shops round here desperately looking for staff.

Will he consider other retail ? Our local B&M always has part-time staff wanted notes on their doors.

if you're near a shopping centre then their website is also worth trying.

UncomfortableSilence · 07/09/2022 19:48

DD, and most of her friends, got her job on Indeed. A big fashion retailer in our closest shopping centre. 8 hour contract and she does overtime when it suits her. She applied for a lot before getting this one so they need to just keep trying.

As a PP said lots of retailers will start advertising for their Christmas temps this month so get him to keep checking all the websites regularly.

Mrsjayy · 07/09/2022 20:41

Why are you signing up for job alerts he needs to get into that not you, I appreciate you are trying to help him but he needs to do things in his own.
