First car advice please

My dd has been saving up to buy her first car. We have figured out that insurance for driving with a provisional licence is fairly cheap but have been unable to get quotes for when she gets her full licence. She is looking at a 1.2 or 1.4 ( fiat, fiesta etc). Could anyone advise as to the rough insurance cost for an 18 year old who has just passed their test? I know each persons premium will be different but it would be good to get a rough idea before she commits to buying a car. I’m trying to guide her towards the 1.2 litre engines but as she’s funding it herself it’s really her decision! She is not rich but has been saving hard! Thanks for any advice you can give 😊

If you put it in as if she’s passed already it’ll give you a quote. It’ll be cheaper if she adds any adults/ parents on.

DS had a 1litre polo: first year insurance without a black box was about £900.

Livelifeinthebuslane · 25/02/2022 22:15

DD had a slightly smaller car and cheapest was £1,000. Someone said that if they have a stereotypically teenage car then that puts up the premium because those types of cars are more likely to be crashed by teenagers whereas family-type cars have fewer accidents. I don't know whether that's true but it sounds plausible!

Cookerhood · 25/02/2022 22:16

Mine were charged about £1800 when the passed at 17. Put it into compare the market saying they have a licence.

Cookerhood · 25/02/2022 22:17

That was with a black box. Quickly went down. DS's renewal this year (3 years on) was £450.

FATEdestiny · 25/02/2022 22:18

Just put it into confused that she's, say, 18yo and passed her test yesterday.

You just make stuff up to give you an idea of a quote.

My DD (17, still learning) is getting her grandmas Peugeot 205 when she passes. 1.4snd 16 years old. Insurance will be £1400 - she's got £800 saved so far

Lovereallywins · 25/02/2022 22:29

Our DD bought her first car, a 1l polo expecting to take her test then lockdown 2 and then 3 meant it was cancelled 3 times..so she /we were paying £35 a month for a car she could hardly use. When she finally took her test the insurance went up to about £1100, more than the value of the car, feels like a rough start to driving but hoping the next year will be easier. It's great to see her finally with some independence. It's not easy for them starting out is it 😔

Paid 850 with a black box from Admiral for a 1.2 Fiesta 2012 plate. Black box in three months and they’re happy for it to come out now.

My DS passed a few years back and his insurance was down by a full 50% in his second year b

JeremiahObadiahJackanoryJonez · 25/02/2022 22:47

Ds (18) passed in August last year. Bought a Citoen C1 in Sept and insurance was £600 with me and dh on the insurance and added to our Admiral multicar - no black box.

Kite22 · 25/02/2022 22:51

Thing is, none of u s can tell you what it will be for you as your postcode has a BIG influence on your quote.
All of mine were looking at about £1600+ for first year.
They were quote lots more from lots of companies.

eunace · 25/02/2022 23:20

About £1k for an 18 yo. Halved in second year.

Holidaypls2022 · 25/02/2022 23:27

My DD used Marmalade. It was the only one that guaranteed the price wldnt go up after she passed. She has a black box and we paid £1200. Could have got it cheaper while she was learning but without their guarantee another company could have named any price after she passed. She has a Fiesta, engine is 1.2 I think.

m00rfarm · 25/02/2022 23:33

Fiesta 1l. 900 first year with black box. 700 second year and 600 third year. No claims made and all with black box. He was cross year three was still very expensive.

m00rfarm · 25/02/2022 23:34

Oh. 2015 fiesta. Valued 9000 first year.

WeAllHaveWings · 25/02/2022 23:41

Ds(17) got Fiesta Ecoboost 1.0L 2014 plate in November. Insurance £1040 with direct line (no black box).

We looked for licence plates online in car sales places and did quotes saying he had passed already.

We put DDs car in my name, with her as a named driver. It works out cheaper.

TheFoldOx · 25/02/2022 23:57

Do this ONLY if it is actually how the car is driven. If DD is the main driver, do not mislead the insurance company. The will be wise to this "trick", looking at the type/age of car, whether you have another policy etc. You risk invalidating the insurance, or worse.

If she is the main driver I believe that's fronting & the insurance would be invalid if they decided to investigate. Plus she needs to build up her no claims.
RainbowMum11 · 26/02/2022 00:07

Not really relevant but I have been driving for 20+ years and drive a 1.2 diesel Skoda Fabia - with max no claims, my insurance is £400ish if that gives you an indication.

User405 · 26/02/2022 09:31

My dd has a fiat 500 and the insurance is £1200 with no black box and £1000 worth one.

Justkeeppedaling · 26/02/2022 10:36

I drove the car too, although it was mostly her car - I "borrowed" it a few times a week.

You can build up a no claims bonus as a named driver with some insurance companies, but anyway, the reduction in cost now that she's just a few years older negates the need to build up a no claims bonus.

Cookerhood · 26/02/2022 10:47

The main driver has to have the insurance in their name. Otherwise it is fronting.

QuantumHypothesis · 26/02/2022 10:48

To those of you saying the insurance is more than the car value, it’s nothing to do with replacing your car, it’s the value of the damage you could do to others. That’s what we were told when we questioned it.

It was still fronting and likely to be investigated in the event of a claim with serious consequences such as invalidating insurance, making it difficult for both parties to get insurance in the future and potentially criminal charges for fraud, Were you prepared to continue lying, potentially to court if caught? Was your teenage child aware of the consequences and prepared to lie too, possibly under caution?

Not sound advice to be giving anyone is it?

vjg13 · 03/03/2022 16:10

My daughter paid £1200 last year, not long passed, Aygo, no black box. She did all the comparison sites, very tedious but companies quotes can vary on each site. Really hoping it will be substantially cheaper for her this year.
