My dd has been saving up to buy her first car. We have figured out that insurance for driving with a provisional licence is fairly cheap but have been unable to get quotes for when she gets her full licence. She is looking at a 1.2 or 1.4 ( fiat, fiesta etc). Could anyone advise as to the rough insurance cost for an 18 year old who has just passed their test? I know each persons premium will be different but it would be good to get a rough idea before she commits to buying a car. I’m trying to guide her towards the 1.2 litre engines but as she’s funding it herself it’s really her decision! She is not rich but has been saving hard! Thanks for any advice you can give 😊

Hey we also found with our dd that insuring her from a week after she passed her test the price was lower than the day of the pass. This was about 4 years ago

My 20 year old is only paying £590 for her Mazda 2. It's on my multi car. We are in a very cheap area for insurance

@RainbowMum11

The problem is it varies so much, I drive a newer more powerful more expensive car and only have 2 years no claims but pay only just over half what you pay £220 - I live in a cheap insurance area.

Mt 20 year old just renewed with 3 years experience - £360 (quoted £450 but he phoned them & they immediately reduced it). It drops quite quickly if you can take the early pain. It also depends on how many miles a year you insure them for.

My son passed his test at 17. He bought an 11yr old 1litre Clio for £1000. The insurance, with a black box was £1600. We both tried lots of insurance companies and brokers, but couldn't get the price down. He was the named driver, but put my on the insurance too to lower costs.

By the second year the cost had come down to under £1000. Fours years later, no black box and around £600

I can’t believe teens still bother with cars when the insurance is so high. DD would never save £1k just to drive around when she can use public transport and get lifts.

A bit short sighted isn't it? Mine has a job, it's not just 'driving about' she does. She 'bothered' with the car because driving gave her an additional skill, opened up the employment world and cost her less than she earns.

We live somewhere with appalling public transport. Both of my working DCs would have no way of getting to work if they didn't drive. One has to have a driving licence & car for their job. I'd hate them to have missed out on their dream job because they couldn't drive.

Not sure I’d want to get up at 1.30am to drop DS off at work. No public transport at that time of the morning, not that any goes to his place of work anyway. If he hadn’t passed his test he wouldn’t be able to do his job.

He paid about £800 to insure a 62 plate Corsa with a black box.

Ah sorry I’m thinking of student teens not working teens.

Benjispruce5 · 07/03/2022 22:21

My DD has passed her test to get it out of the way and occasionally drives my car but probably won’t get her own car until after uni when she can afford one.

I imagine most 17 yos will be working in some capacity so unless you want to be getting them to and from work then it makes sense. They have to do their first year driving and insuring a car at some point.

DH was in his 40s and had 20+ years No claims discount. He sold his car and cycled for 6 years, we didn't realise and he bought a new car and the insurance was £600/700 when usually about £2/300 so I don't even think it would be 17 yos who are the only ones affected when they have no built up any no claims.

We are literally going through this right now. DHs car has just been written off through no fault of his own, DS can drive in 11 months so is buying DH a car until he passes his test then DH will just use it as and when. We have put in the details as if its a year on to see what is on the cheaper end of the scale. We assumed something like a Toyota Yaris would be pretty low but the Suzuki Alto or Kia Picanto are much lower (by about £400).
