Car for teens

Probably been done to death but…

DS has only just started lessons. Putting him on my Mini car insurance is £1200 even though he’s obviously still learning.

The plan is to have a car that he and me can share for a couple of years, so we need to swap the Mini for something that he can drive and me also (when I need it). We have a bigger car but DH works from home and I work very close by.

We definitely do not need 3 cars yet.

What would you do?

Have you used a comparison site to see what it would be once he has passed on your mini.

To be honest most first insurances will be between £1000 - £2000.

Citygirl2019 · 12/02/2022 20:29

The Hyundai i10 seems a reasonable car to insure for first time drivers.

Fiestas and corsa's tend to be more expensive due to them being popular.

Justkeeppedaling · 12/02/2022 20:30

Ford Fiesta?

Snooks1971 · 12/02/2022 20:30

Thanks @Citygirl2019 I was under the impression that as a learner it would be cheaper and then me more like at least £1000 when he has passed and driving solo.

On comparison sites if I’m the named driver on a Fiesta etc with him as the additional it’s more like £300+

Fiat 500 was the cheapest to insure when I needed it for DC.

Snooks1971 · 12/02/2022 20:31

Thank you @Justkeeppedaling cross post!

You won’t get much cheaper for a first year than 1200. My dd1 has a Mini Cooper was £1280 in first year and now £380 in year 3. DD2 was on other dds mini in year 1 as her sister was in Africa. She’s since bought an Aygo and in year do cost her under £300.

Snooks1971 · 12/02/2022 20:33

@somewhereovertherain was your DD the sole named driver?

CovidCorvid · 12/02/2022 20:34

I didn’t put Dd on my own insurance when she was learning. I used a pay as you go type insurance for it. Veygo.com

When she passed we got her a Skoda fabia. Apparently cars which are more popular with older drivers can be cheaper to insure.

RussianSpy101 · 12/02/2022 20:36

Audi A1 are a nice small first car. Not sure on insurance.

lovelyupnorth · 12/02/2022 20:38

Yes her car with us on the insurance as well.

lovelyupnorth · 12/02/2022 20:40

It was only £300 when she was learning. And dd2 had an add on policy on my car when she was learning again not expensive

Marmalade
Adrain flux
Tesco Boxins

Are the insurance companies we use in the early days.

bloodywhitecat · 12/02/2022 20:41

I had a Fabia when my two learned to drive, it was relatively cheap to insure them once they passed their tests (I was told that cars like the Fabia that are not popular with youngsters are cheaper to insure than their more popular e.g. Fiesta/Corsa type rivals)

That’s interesting. Will look at Veygo - thank you

Confused dot com list the Skoda Fabian as the number one car or choice for 'boy racers'

So I basically need to trade in the mini and get an older person’s car 😂 makes sense. And I’m 50 and this is the first time we could afford a lovely non-boring car 😫

I know I'm risking being lectured by all those who've been moaning about reading comprehension levels on this site...But I skim read your title as 'CAT for teens' and was expecting something more interesting Grin

Tee20x · 12/02/2022 20:47

Insurance will also depend whether you're in/out of London and the area you live in so that will make a difference too.

My first car was a VW Polo in London and was 1100 first year, 720 second year so still quite high compared to others.

Angrymum22 · 12/02/2022 20:48

We are in exactly the same position. I have been looking at Audi A1. Insurance is also dependent on the safety features as well as engine size so the newer cars age often cheaper to insure.
DS was 17 last September, he was as t really that interested in learning straight away. I think he was worried he would become designated driver if he passed before most of his friends. It is taking 10+ weeks currently for provisional licences to come through and driving instructors have 2-4 mnth waiting lists.

Nomoreusernames1244 · 12/02/2022 20:49

Have to say I bloody love mine. Quite evangelical about it Grin.

Dc is only on a provisional so far but insurance hasn’t gone up at all, although I did have to switch providers as churchill got all computer says no and wanted £300 just to add them on. New provider was less than that for the whole year Grin.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 12/02/2022 20:50

That learner insurance sounds expensive. Ds was pretty cheap to insure when he was learning - I couldn’t add him on ours so he had an independent one for himself - still think it was with the RAC. It was only when he passed that it went up ridiculously.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 12/02/2022 20:52

Dayinsure.

ForcingSmiles · 12/02/2022 21:54

Insurance depends on so many things, location/car/where its kept (garage/drive/street) but my first year insurance was £800 on a mini one so it is doable (that was without a black box )

fabulouslyglamorousferret · 12/02/2022 22:11

My DC hasn't passed his test yet but we have bought a car in his name and insured it in his name as a learner driver with me on the insurance - it was only £300. It also means when he passes his test and gets 'non learner' insurance he will have a years no claims bonus

And go for a random teenage choice of car, we bought him an old Juke
