No period yet

My daughter is 14 since November. Do you think I should be worried that she hasn't had her period yet? She is a little anxious as she said all her friends have their periods. She is going through puberty as she has boobs and underarm and pubic hair but no periods. My head is saying not to worry until she's 15 but I am anxious.

I'd wait until around age 16 before worrying especially as she has other signs of puberty. Lucky her not having periods to deal with; my dd got hers at age 11

Theblacksheepandme · 04/01/2022 18:14

She is lucky isn't she? I do tell her that but I remember myself wanting to be like all my other friends. Her friends talk about their periods and she told me she pretends to know what they're talking about. She is a little embarrassed. I do tell her that there is nothing to be embarrassed about.

Just give her chance. I was 13 but my DD was 11 (literally the day after her 11th birthday). Sometimes I wish she was still waiting when she gets the period hormones....

Honestly though there is such a wide range of ages where they start. I really wouldn't be worried at age 14.

Nillynally · 04/01/2022 18:22

I was 17! No problems, consider myself very lucky now but mortified at the time

Topseyt · 04/01/2022 18:23

See how it goes over the next year. Check that she is eating properly and is of a healthy bodyweight (discreetly). If there is still no sign then I would consider taking her to the GP.

Loonmanding · 04/01/2022 18:25

Its perfectly normal..I was well over 16

AuntMasha · 04/01/2022 18:29

I was 15 and a half and my mum was 17. Don’t worry.

Thiswayorthatway · 04/01/2022 18:33

I was 18, had boobs and pubic hair but periods just came late.

Starcaller · 04/01/2022 18:38

I was 15, and very rapidly regretted wishing for them to start! The later the better IMO, and 14 isn't abnormal.

Bananaman123 · 04/01/2022 18:47

I was 15 and glad to be the last to start, bloody migraines and mood swings. My niece was 10 and I felt so gutted for her.

cherrytopcake · 04/01/2022 18:55

I would tell her not to worry. Mine arrived just after my 15th bday and have always been light and fairly irregular. Which I love! I remember feeling like she did. It will happen soon. I know she won't be thinking about babies yet or ever... but in case she does get light and irregular ones like mine, I went on to have two children and never struggled to get pregnant. First pregnancy was a happy accident (first time without protection). Second pregnancy took less than 3 months. Late start, or irregular periods, don't necessarily mean you'll have fertility issues.

JaninaDuszejko · 04/01/2022 18:58

Agree with PPs, much better to be one of the last to start your period, I think a 17 yo is much more capable of coping with puberty than a 9 yo.

BlackAlys · 04/01/2022 19:17

DD was 16 and started last August. Don't worry.

quicknamechange4000 · 04/01/2022 19:19

I was 2 months off turning 15, had become very stressed waiting! But have always been regular and no problems conceiving.

Elieza · 04/01/2022 19:33

What’s her bmi?
If she’s too light her periods won’t start.

But apart from that I wouldn’t worry.

Theblacksheepandme · 04/01/2022 19:51

She is a healthy weight and constantly eating. She does a lot of sport. I actually wondered if it was too much sports that may affect her periods.

Lucky her my daughter started a month after she turned 10

ffscovid · 04/01/2022 20:01

If she's quite sporty that could be a reason. You need to have a certain amount of body fat to trigger the hormones for puberty and then menstruation. It's why most (not all) girls who start their periods young (primary school age) are generally a bit on the tubby side.
14 is perfectly within the realms of normal though. I'd only worry if she was 16+ or had worrying symptoms such as abdominal discomfort but no period.

Theblacksheepandme · 04/01/2022 20:14

She does get abdominal discomfort and we think this is it and then nothing.

How much sport does she do and does she eat enough calories for her age and activity level? You can be healthy weight and still lose your period if you’re not eating enough and exercising too much. You need a certain amount of body fat to menstruate.

FingChristmasFamily · 05/01/2022 09:08

14 is slightly later than average, but certainly not late. I believe anything you to 16 or 17 is considered to be with in the normal range.

My sister was 16 starting hers, had been developed in all other ways for years before. No problems as an adult and really it’s a lucky escape if you dot get them too young! Though I know at the time you don’t want to be different from your friends.

Theblacksheepandme · 05/01/2022 09:23

Thank you all so much for replying. It really has reassured me.

DD was just 16, DD2 was14. I was 13.

blyn72 · 20/01/2022 09:15

My cousin and a friend's daughter didn't start menstruating until they were 16 and both were perfectly healthy. I wouldn't worry about it and am sure she will start soon.

Wotrewelookinat · 28/01/2022 18:20

My twin DDs started aged 15, my older DD wasn’t til nearly 18, but PCOS runs in our family so this could be a factor.
