School exclusion

My child was excluded permanently from school today for spitting. I know spitting is absolutely disgusting... Its appalling. But the kid he spat at punched him in retaliation. I don't blame him. But how can it be fair that my kid who spat gets expelled but the kid who punched him did not. My child has no previous record for bad behaviour.. Only historical problems with he same boy. I'm not defending spitting at all... But doesn't expulsion seem a bit extreme? I've also found out you can appeal but not even the omnibus can make the school reverse their decision even if the omnibus disagrees with the school!!

I can tell everybody being spat on is one of the worst experiences I have ever had this happened when I was 16 . I was spat on by another girl for two reasons ,firstly because I got the part time position at Blockbuster Video secondly because I went the girls Grammar school.

For someone to spit on another person requires, pure hate and is not just a spur of the moment thing but a calculated vile act of assault.

I can also tell you my dad was a prosecutor with the C.P.S at the time and was apoplectic with rage he wanted to prosecute the culprit !
The other school concerned were not interested washing their hands of the incident. This despite both of us being in our respective school uniforms at the time.

Therefore, despite having sympathy for the O.Ps situation. I have little sympathy for her sons actions but accept he needs an other chance at a new school.

@BingBongToTheMoon

Aye right, there’s no way this is his first offence. Plus there’s a pandemic and he’s spitting!? That’s revolting normally never mind considering the possibility of COVID, HIV, Hepatitis etc. Good on the other boy retaliating.
@BingBongToTheMoon this is incorrect, there is no risk of transmitting HIV from kissing, just as there isn’t from kissing or being sneezed on or giving mouth to mouth resuscitation.

I do stand corrected and sincerely apologise for any upset my comment may have caused.

Sorry to hear this OP. Yes it's disgusting but to me it seems a complete over reaction if this is his first offence. I have been through something similar with my son, although not for spitting. Did the school go through a proper disciplinary procedure?

@Maisy6565 I don't know why you're getting some awful replies.

Is there any mother of a teenager who spat on someone, first time out of the blue, who wouldn't be baffled, mortified, upset and angry that their child was permanently excluded?

The fact that so many posters are saying it's impossible and there must be more to the story, shows that there is something wrong here. A child should not be permanently excluded for spitting once. If that's what happened then you are definitely reasonable to fight it.

If there's some new Covid rule that spitting will result in instant expulsion then that needs to be made extremely clear to students and parents before doling out the punishment.

"If the governors don’t overturn the exclusion, you can ask for an independent review by your local council (or academy trust if the school’s an academy). The governors must tell you how to do this."

That's from the government site. So you have 2 opportunities to get it overturned: Governors, then an appeal panel.

No probs, just wanted to set the record straight. Failed a bit with the typo which should have said spitting, not kissing, (though kissing’s ok too). 🤦🏻‍♀️
