Period pants - how have your got on with them?

I’ve been expecting one of my DC to start for about 2 years. We have cotton san towels in the house, car and her room and an emergency bag with pants and towel.

She’s recently asked about other options for when she starts - she’s later than average (over 14) but this is because she is very very thin (not overweight but just her natural build she’s tall and Thin) she’s in adult clothes and a size 4-6.

How have your teenagers got on with period pants? Any plus or minus. Apart from cost (!) they seems to be about 3 main brands but all seem expensive(!)?

> £20 each!!? You could get a Mooncup for cost of < 2 pairs.

I am curious how ppl get on, but wow at the price.

flipflopslap · 26/08/2021 07:59

I use cloth pads but they are bulky and can be uncomfortable ie I can't ride my bike when wearing.
I've heard really good things about the pants. I just saving up!

thefemaleJoshLyman · 26/08/2021 08:01

I bought some for DD, she started her periods on her 11th birthday. They have been great, removing the stress about changing during the day at school. We bought Modibodi red. We do have to rinse each day after use and then wash but this is not too bad.

NoWordForFluffy · 26/08/2021 08:02

Not everybody wants to try a mooncup, do they though?

Beamur · 26/08/2021 08:03

They are expensive to start with but really good. No mess, no fuss, no smell. No rustling or changing at school, no leaks.
DD very happy with them. I've started using them for overnights as I was leaking through tampons.

NoWordForFluffy · 26/08/2021 08:04

I've read good things about Sainsbury's version on MN threads before.

Bargain compared to the cumulative cost of tampons and pads!!

I use Thinx period pangs and love them. Not only are they reliable but it gives me that extra peace of mind as I was so worried of leaking before.

Also they're so comfy I wear them to bed sometimes even when I'm not on my periodSmile

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 26/08/2021 08:06

Primark do period pants.

I have a Mooncup and agree it's a very good, reusable option, but no way did I want to use it at 14 (knew of it).

greensnail · 26/08/2021 08:10

My preteen DDS both use period pants. They find them really comfortable and convenient to use.

PrettyCherryBlossom · 26/08/2021 08:11

DD has used Modibodi for a year and loves them. In fact she says they’re the most comfy pants she’s ever worn! I bought some too and now I’m converted, they’re just so convenient.

DragonLegs · 26/08/2021 08:12

Those who use modi bodi what is the sizing like? I’m about to buy for my 12 year old (very tall but slim) and ideally wanted them to last a couple of years.

BeautifulTulips · 26/08/2021 21:54

My daughter loves them, she has very heavy periods and after trying a few brands she finds modibody best. The ones from Sainsbury's are ok but thin and not very absorbent as are Primark ones - DD finds these good for when she's not sure if her period is about to start or not. May be ok as backup, or if flow is light. They give her a lot of reassurance, especially last year when she had to wear shorts all day on PE days! To the person that asked about sizing of modibody, I measured her hips as per the size guide and ordered the appropriate size – they are perfect with growing room.

Menissues · 26/08/2021 21:58

I've just got some reusable sanitary towels. Sorry to be dim but how often do they need changing?

Emmelina · 26/08/2021 22:03

14 year old loves them, she has the smallest available from Primark, I’ve just nipped the side seams in a tiny bit for fit as she’s quite small.
She can get away with a pair through the school day at the moment (started a few months back) then changes to cloth pads and regular knickers when she gets home. Saves changing them at school, though she does keep a spare pair of knickers and a pad in a little bag just in case she needs to change earlier.

YouveBeenLittUp · 26/08/2021 22:05

Sorry to derail the thread but I seem these in primark at the weekend and wondered how they work, how often do you need to change them?

It will depend very much on the flow, the Primark ones are quite thin so if your flow is moderate to heavy they wouldn't last more than a few hours. Multibody do some for heavy periods. They are expensive but for my daughter well worth the money. They last a full school day which gives her a massive reassurance. You rinse them in cold water, then put them on a cool wash. We tend to dry them overnight in the airing cupboard or on the line if it's a sunny day. They have given my daughter a lot more confidence when dealing with her period
Bellagonna · 26/08/2021 22:19

I have cheeky wipes version. They're ok but the elastics have started to escape after just a year.

I wouldnt recommend a mooncup for a teenager just starting out. One false move when changing it and you're covered in blood.

LittleBiscuit09 · 27/08/2021 09:17

Primark three pairs for 13 quid! I live mine! Absolute game changer! And I can wear them all day with no issues.

Larryyourwaiter · 27/08/2021 09:38

The only issue we have is drying them. It’s fine when it’s hot outside or the heating is on as they are quite thick and take some drying. So you need to make sure you have enough pairs to use.

TeacupDrama · 27/08/2021 09:51

you must not tumble dry them was thinking of getting some for DD is using disposable pads now but will try the primark or sainsburys ones first

Sportsnight · 27/08/2021 10:00

It seems more hassle to me to have to change pants rather than just a pad, but I’m a mooncup person and I can’t imagine a teen wanting to use that either. I have a daughter coming up for 10 so I’m interested to see how popular they are. I suspect we’ll try them.

I remember how outraged my mother was at the idea of tampons, so I suppose my befuddlement at the idea of period pants is similar!

I think the idea is that the pants are built in a way which means they last all day. I often change pads 4 hours, mooncup obviously a lot less hassle, so I sway more towards that. But am tempted by the pants as I understand they dont need changing at all during the day.
Stretchandsnap · 27/08/2021 10:09

My 11 year old has the modibody ones and they have been fantastic for her and last the whole day - I even bought her the bikini bottoms for our holiday and they were great too. I use them too, have always used modibody too, but am testing the primark ones today, seem fine so far!

Beamur · 27/08/2021 12:04

We have the Modibody ones. You get different absorbencies - same as with sanitary pads or tampons. More absorbent ones for heavier days. DD doesn't change at school and just showers and puts on clean when she gets home. I just stick them in the wash with everything else to be honest. Everything comes out clean.
