Setting up automatic wifi disable overnight?

doorornottodoor · 15/08/2021 18:44

Anyone done this successfully? I’ve just had a frustrating session with BT but it seems impossible to do. Crazy!

My 16 year old is a bloody nightmare with devices and so I want to set up automatic wifi turn off overnight. So I don’t need to stay up and also have the battle every night with him. He CANNOT self regulate. We have tried.

Any techy help? BT is so shit at customer service. I have the app but it allows me to pause the wifi but not set up an automatic routine.

Thanks!

could you get some sort of plug on a timer? not sure if possible to get one with a code to turn it on and off.

Or plug it in in your bedroom and ensure it's turned off when you go to sleep. You might want to get an extension lead so it can be situated in there.

We use sky buddy thing. Do bt have a similar app,

CHIShandler · 15/08/2021 18:52

The easy but time consuming option would be to change the password every evening.

Forestdweller11 · 15/08/2021 18:52

In 'my bt' there's a bit for WiFi settings. You can switch WiFi off for individual devices. I just block the devices for the teens after 10.30, back on at 6.30.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 15/08/2021 18:53

I use a plug on a timer.

doorornottodoor · 15/08/2021 18:56

Thanks all. Yes a timer is an option but it feels that there should be a way of doing it electronically. Changing the password would be a big headache. We have so many devices and Netflix etc…

I have the app but it won’t let me do it.

Do you have a Broadband router OP?
If so, what model?

doorornottodoor · 15/08/2021 19:01

If anyone who has the app can tell me how they did it that would be great. Thanks! I have now wasted 2 hours of my life on this. Husband had lost the log in details so I needed to reset the whole thing before I could download the app Angry

Before you spend any more time on this - will they not just use data? Or someone else’s unsecured WiFi? There’s loads of it near me…

But yeah, the last time I did it, I just set time outs for specific devices like others said, it was in My BT.

doorornottodoor · 15/08/2021 19:05

Hi it’s a SmartHub 2

doorornottodoor · 15/08/2021 19:06

@TakeYourFinalPosition yes probably but they have limited data so it’s more self regulating .

In your web browser go to 192.168. 1.254. Log in with the admin username and password that’s written on your router. You should be able to use the settings to restrict access for certain devices at certain times.

CornishTiger · 15/08/2021 19:11

Yep

Type in 192.168.1.254 your browser and log in.

Wakeupin2022 · 15/08/2021 19:13

Yep the IP address above.

We use BT hub to control the time kids devices & TV are on.

I don't find it that easy to use tbh but once it's up and running it works fine.

doorornottodoor · 15/08/2021 19:14

So you’re not using the app?

OP posts:
doorornottodoor · 15/08/2021 19:18

It just says access controls now managed by MyBT App

doorornottodoor · 15/08/2021 19:19

Honestly it’s so shit

alohahae · 15/08/2021 19:19

Won't they just use mobile data anyway?

gvb8 · 15/08/2021 19:20

In the app, go to your Wi-fi network, then control wi-fi access for your devices. Find the device you want to limit access to in the list, then you can set up a schedule for it to switch off

doorornottodoor · 15/08/2021 19:21

They don’t get much

Should have said you'll find your wi-if network option under the 3 dots on the bottom right hand side of the app

doorornottodoor · 15/08/2021 19:25

Yes I’m having trouble setting up the hub in my app. It keeps saying not recognising the password but I’m definitely typing the one from the back of the hub in correctly

Try WifiBlocker app- works for us

doorornottodoor · 15/08/2021 19:28

Am I going mad?!

Thanks for all your help!

In your web browser go to 192.168. 1.254. Log in with the admin username and password that’s written on your router.

I hate to be the one to point this out but if you are using the default admin password, which is written on the router, do you really think that the teenager isn't going to just undo it again.

Change the admin password.
