Literally just that. Unless I make them they usually only come down for food/drinks but unless I make them come for a walk or pasta game they will be in tier rooms DS is 14 and DD is 16. Neither seem depressed they are on FaceTiming with friends playing Xbox watching films listening to music or reading. During the week they are downstairs for school work. Just wondered if this is normal.

14 and 16yr old probably spend 98% in rooms. Its not usually this bad but lockdown....

Rubyshoes10 · 10/01/2021 20:50
  • Meant play some games.

Yup same - pretty much all day and evening. They pop down for food but only get 30 mins lunch break so usually take lunch upstairs with them. I do make them come out for a walk a couple of times a week, but they seem ok about it.

Rubyshoes10 · 10/01/2021 20:51

Just had a discussion with my DP about it and I guess when we were younger other than a CD player and books I didn’t have TV in rooms or all the gadgets so we had to go downstairs to watch TV.

My 13 year old is never is in room - except to sleep. During the day we are all downstairs.

Theromanempire · 10/01/2021 20:54

I have a 12 and 14 year old - both practically living in their bedrooms at the moment. They are doing their classes/schoolwork in there, spending their free time in there...not great or healthy but all their activities/meeting friends has stopped Sad

They will come out for meals or if we offer to play games with them. Interestingly, DS1 also comes and sits in the lounge after we've gone to bed Hmm

CharlotteCollinsneeLucas · 10/01/2021 20:54

My 13yo has not got to that stage yet either. 15yo and 17yo both in rooms for most of the day.

FuckOffBorisYouTwat · 10/01/2021 20:55

Since this Lockdown I force the 15 and 13 year out for lunch, dinner and a walk of at least half an hour with a friend or with us. So far everyday we have managed a game of some sort (table tennis, chess, poker) and a TV programme (broklynn 99 current favourite). We have a few hours screen free each day but they will listen to music over leaving their rooms.

Theforest · 10/01/2021 20:56

Mine is never in his room. Xbox is in the lounge

Theromanempire · 10/01/2021 20:56

Just to add, they both seem happy enough, they play with their friends online and I pop in regularly to check on them.

Rubyshoes10 · 10/01/2021 20:57

Thank you everyone was starting to get a little worried. They seem pretty happy and I pop in and see them. I guess they would be out and about if it wasn’t lockdown meeting friends doing activities.

23hrs a day. half hour for shower, half hour getting food from kitchen.

NotYourReindeer · 10/01/2021 21:00

Two 17 year old and a 15 year old. Spend all time in their rooms with the exception for food foraging trips to the kitchen.

I used to spend 95% of my time in mu room as a teen too. There's not that much for them to do out and about and there's only so much local walking one can do currently.

We check in with them to make sure they're OK, they tend to grunt or curl their top lip/roll their eyes and that's that. Unless they want a Dominoes or McDonald's and then we are their besties for the duration of ordering to delivery.

partyatthepalace · 10/01/2021 21:14

16 year old exactly this.

We make them come down for supper, a couple walks a week, and a couple family film/games nights.

13 yo not at that stage yet

marmitecake · 10/01/2021 21:21

Op, completely normal. I have two teens. The lesser spotted teenager is a species known to hide away for long periods but always emerge from its lairs at feeding time when a good selection of tempting snacks and favourite foods should always be on offer.

Rubyshoes10 · 10/01/2021 21:26

@marmitecake that did make me laugh. You have completely nailed it there.

OP posts:
ButterMeUpScotty · 10/01/2021 21:31

@NotYourReindeer that made me laugh, same in my house. Teen comes down to eat, grunts and sighs a lot the rest of the time, except when he’s looking for a takeaway then we’re his best mates. What else can they do at the minute though. At least they’re talking to friends online.

NiceTwin · 10/01/2021 21:32

I joke with my dd, 14, on the rare occasion she is downstairs, about being vertical and not to make any sudden moves Grin

AintPageantMaterial · 10/01/2021 21:34

All of it.
They can only be enticed out for meals.

CatherinedeBourgh · 10/01/2021 21:38

Never. There is only a bed in there and no wifi, so other than read a book there isn’t much to do there and they prefer to read in the lounge.

Mine are 15 and almost 14. They spend about 90% of their time in their bedrooms.
I did the same when I was their age.

zeitgeista · 10/01/2021 22:47

i spend 90% of my time in my bedroom as it has everything i need other than food, a shower and a toilet.

Randomrebel · 10/01/2021 22:54

Probably 90%-95% in bedrooms it feels very weird and as though they have both almost checked out of family life especially younger DD (17 and 15). They sleep, do school work and talk to friends on XBOX, phones, ipads. I have always insist they both eT downstairs otherwise we wouldn’t see them when they want food and drinks.

WhatTheFoot · 10/01/2021 22:55

My dd is 16. I would say she's in her room 85% of the time. The change happened at about 14 I think, before then she would be downstairs with us most of the time.
