My dd 14 has recently said she wants to change her dress style - she calls herself alternative. I’m ok with her wanting to change but she is talking about ‘dark academia’ , I had to Google it to find out what is was , anyway she bought a few things and put them on and I really didn’t like them on her , she just doesn’t suit it at all ! If I say I’m
Not keen she thinks it’s because I don’t like her being alternative, how do I tell her without hurting her feelings too much that it’s just not nice?
She looks about 20 and like she’s going out to work in an office ! Am
I over reacting ? I really want her to wear what she’s happy in but I don’t want people making fun or her being bullied .

I've seen the style and I quite like it. Well done her for not looking like an identikit teen. I would applaud her desire to be different

funnylittlefloozie · 17/10/2020 17:57

I just looked up "dark academia" and its literally goths at uni...ffs! I doubt anyone will really notice! These years are when we experiment with shit fashion and make-up, to try and figure out who we are. If other kids laugh at her, she'll either change her look or she wont. Let her try.

jennie0412 · 17/10/2020 18:01

I dress in this style and I'm not even 20 either! If she was wearing a crop top and booty shorts you'd be complaining about that too Confused. It looks very put together and I love the 'aesthetic' of it. I even have a Pinterest board dedicated to it Grin

Is it like this? Smile

It’s a big trend at the moment on tik tok (I don’t have tik tok, but read a big article about it the other day!). As pp said at least this is the trend and not something like the Perspex “stripper heels” when I was in my late teens...not sure how I didn’t break an ankle 😂

CaptainMyCaptain · 17/10/2020 18:04

Like this.

Candleabra · 17/10/2020 18:04

Looks nice and smart! All parents wring their hands at teenagers fashion.

Oops no picture. Here it is.

I just googled and to be honest it could be much worse. Adidas popper were big in my day, just saying 😅

Beamur · 17/10/2020 18:09

OP. Don't tell her you don't like it. It's her trying out different styles.
Maybe suggest something in the vibe of the look that you think will suit her.

rbe78 · 17/10/2020 18:09

It looks nice! Leave her to it, could be worse...

Nandocushion · 17/10/2020 18:12

I like it Shock feels quite 80s to me.

Whitehome · 17/10/2020 18:13

Yes Jennie and captain that’s it

Lweji · 17/10/2020 18:16

She's 14. She will know what she'll be bullied or made fun of.

What do you want her in?

Whitehome · 17/10/2020 18:22

Hi Lweji I want her to be happy is what she wears , I just don’t think this style suits her , maybe I’m worrying to much about what other kids etc will think. Her friends all dress alternative aswell but not the dark academia

OP posts:
Whitehome · 17/10/2020 18:23

Thanks everyone, I think it’s a nice style , I just don’t thinks it’s for her, maybe I’m wrong , I do believe she seen it on tiktok so maybe just a phase and she will experiment until she finds what’s right for her

I really can't see the problem .

Whitehome · 17/10/2020 18:55

I know I’m
Probably overthinking it , I just worry to much about other people and it’s not a good thing I know , to be fair my dd hardly goes out, she goes out on a Saturday for a few hours into town and then home .

Myv13 year old DD dresses like this with a variety of wigs in bizarre colours. It's like cosplay lite for her and I think it's a nice look. She went out yesterday in steam punk victoriana inspired clothing complete with a bowler and my Irregular Choice flat boots that look like spatz. Her friends tend to be either very similar or in sports gear. This is in a small town in NI and she's never had anything said. Some of the older people who have approached her are very complimentary and the older teens don't bother with them.

Dontwanttobeyourmonkeywench · 17/10/2020 19:10

I wish I had been as confident in my skin when I was her age

Fireandflames666 · 18/10/2020 08:58

Leave her to find her own style, if people don't like it then that's their problem. There's way too much pressure on looking a certain way in society and it's just wrong.

Lovemusic33 · 18/10/2020 08:59

I think there’s much worse things she could be wearing, I would be pretty happy if my dd would wear that style, my dd lives in jogging bottoms and leggings 🤣. My dd doesn’t really care what others think about what she’s wearing, she dresses for comfort but also wears funny slogan T-shirt’s that I hate.

wishywashywoowoo70 · 18/10/2020 09:05

I love that she's wearing something different to everyone else. Teens these days are identical.
They all wear the same clothes have the same hair cuts and the same thoughts.

I dressed quite rock style from about 14/15 and still do if I go out over 30 years later. Can't be doing with the fashion everyone else wears

Let her wear it. There are much worse trends she could be following. I've never heard of this look before it's pretty cute and I bet teens look fabulous in it

Okbutnotgreat · 18/10/2020 09:10

Don’t overthink it. Most kids these days seem to spend a fortune trying to look individual and end up looking identical. It’s just clothes and compared to the love island look which many favour, I’d be much happier with this. Clothes should be whatever you’re comfortable wearing be it jeans joggers or dresses.

Bouledeneige · 18/10/2020 09:11

I love teens to just choose their own style and experiment. That style looks great. What boring adults (no offence) think suits them is really not the point of teen fashion. In fact its the opposite. Don't say anything.

I was very out there as an 80s teen and loved it - hair all colours and styles. Its the fun of being young.
