13yo DS not really growing. Do they all get a growth spurt at some point?

I realise I'm probably over thinking this as per bloody usual but DS is mentioning it more often.
He's 5 6" and not had a growth spurt yet, his voice hasn't broken, only a couple of rogue spots and no underarm hair.

He"s noticed his mates are maturing faster and getting taller than him. But he's just nudged up in height over the last year. He doesn't have a massive appetite and doesn't sleep in.

When did everyone else's teens grow?

13 for ds and he is not stopping but away to turn 14. My eldest dd was 17 though before she had her first period. Don’t worry there are plenty of years yet.

FluffyPJs · 20/09/2020 20:03

My son has grown about 5/ 6 inches since last summer. He's now 14 and a half. He's almost 6 feet tall, less than a quarter of an inch off. I think he may still grow a bit more.

holidayseeker · 20/09/2020 20:05

When I was younger my brother was small and didn’t grow much until he turned 16 and then he shot up to 6 ft.

Bessiebigpants · 20/09/2020 20:25

Does he stink yet? First a disgusting Bo musky lingering pong then some mood swings then your baby is a massive eating machine next thing you know you have to stand on the sofa to give them a telling off! Puberty happens at different rates in different children my son 15 has mates at a variety of stages

Northernparent68 · 20/09/2020 20:59

If your worried book him an appointment with your go.

megletthesecond · 20/09/2020 21:09

bessie he's not stinky either. But he's really sensible with showers, lynx and clean clothes.

My 14 year old seems to have hit a growth spurt recently and his voice has started to break. No underarm hair yet. He's still only 160cm, but he only grew 14 cm between 11 and 14 and now has grown 3cm in a few months.

Hazelmazel · 20/09/2020 21:12

13 is still young for a boy, my DS is also 13 and still looks little boy-like, just taller. He's not had a growth spurt but is growing steadily but no other signs of puberty yet.

Theromanempire · 20/09/2020 21:14

My DS is 14 and not really had a growth spurt, think he is around 5ft 5in Confused he has a few signs of starting puberty but not many.

Like others have said, his friends are all at different stages in height and maturity. He also commented that a couple of his friends have shot up since he saw then 6 months ago.

Me and DH are both taller than average so logic says he will grow tall but I am starting to worry that it won't happen Sad

Passthecake30 · 20/09/2020 21:14

My ds is 12.5 and is about 5ft, doesn’t smell, same childish voice as always - same as half of his class. The other half are about 5ft 6, smelly, spotty and gruff. They’re all going through puberty at different rates.

Neolara · 20/09/2020 21:15

My dd is 14 in Dec and he isn't 5'6" yet. Some of his friends have begun to grow but I don't think all of them.

HasaDigaEebowai · 20/09/2020 21:19

Ds1 is 15 and s half and still about 5 foot 5. Everything else has developed but he doesn’t seem to be growing. I’m not sure whether he will get much taller. Ds2 is 13 and two inches taller than ds1.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 20/09/2020 21:21

My dp did he said he went home one summer one of the smallest in the class, went back and he was one of the biggest. He's 6ft 3 now.

BackforGood · 21/09/2020 00:53

ds didn't really grow (upwards) until he was 15.
He did put on some weight first and starting looking a bit podgy, then sort of grew up into his weight.

redlockscelt · 21/09/2020 01:06

One of Ds's friends has just started his growth spurt and his voice has broken. He's 16.

WeAllHaveWings · 21/09/2020 01:27

Ds(16), was quite a bit shorter than me (5'10") last year and has sprouted to 6'1" and up to a size 12 shoe 👣 (and has huge hands 🤚🏼✋🏼!) in the last year. Shoulders and chest have got broader too, armpit hair started in last 6 months from nothing at all. He also has a wee moustache starting. He occasionally had bo after sport since he was 9ish, but now even when still showering daily he has a weird pong 👃about him especially in the evening.

when he went back to school after lockdown everyone was commenting on how much his voice 🗣 had changed.

They all go at different times, one of the boys in ds's class has had a reasonable beard for over a year now!!

FlippinNoah · 21/09/2020 01:50

Last year my DS was 12, smaller than me (5"3) and still had puppy fat. I had to buy him school trousers with an adjustable waistband because he couldn't fasten them.

Fast forward a year, he's 13, his voice has broken and he's 5"7.

I looked in his red book (kept it all these years!) at the growth charts. He was on the 95th centile when born and it turns out he still is now, predicted 6"2 by the time he is 18. You can google the growth charts if you don't still have the red book, it might help you predict what height he should end up and roughly where he should be now.

redlockscelt · 21/09/2020 02:08

My ds is tall and his voice has changed but there are no other signs of puberty, no underarm hair and he has no teenage acne or need to shave.

Imapotato · 21/09/2020 07:30

I think 13 is still pretty young for a boy to have had their main growth spurt. Plenty of boys still look very young at this age.

Our neighbours boy is 5 months younger than dd1. They are both 15 and in y11. Dd1(5ft6) has always been taller than him (known him since preschool), until about he shot up over the last 6 months or so and he now towers above her.

Another friend left school at 16 at 5ft and is now 6ft1 as an adult.

13 is very young to worry. He’ll grow soon.

BalloonSlayer · 21/09/2020 07:39

It's not unusual to not have had a growth spurt by 13!

DC3's school has given each year group a different coloured lanyard and I have seen some year 9s who are smaller than the year 7s.

Some don't have their growth spurt till year 10 or even 11. I saw a lad yesterday and did a double take - last time I saw him he was in year 11 and about 5'2", now suddenly he is a big bloke.

In Clive James's autobiography Unreliable Memoirs (which is fab!) he describes waiting longingly and agonisingly for a growth spurt that never came. He ended up at 6'2" I think but never had that sudden surge where he changed dramatically. He said his hormones were on a drip feed unlike everyone else's.

middleager · 21/09/2020 07:50

I have two 14 year old boys. Neither are very tall.

At 13, DS1 was just short of 5ft. He has now hit puberty but still grows slowly. At 14.5 he is 5ft 4.
His twin is about 5ft 7 and has hit puberty too.

I'm not very tall though and neither is his dad. I think itcan be hard for teen boys, with the obsession for being tall.

HoratiotheHorsefly · 21/09/2020 08:07

Happened to my ds when he was almost 15. He just started growing and hasn't stopped yet several months later.

N0tfinished · 21/09/2020 08:26

I'd say he's still in track. 13 is young still. A lot of boys seem to have their growth spurt around 14. My DS1 turned 15 this summer. He shot up to 6ft, his back is covered in stretch marks. Whole new wardrobe required, it was like having a science experiment in the house.

GetThatHelmetOn · 21/09/2020 08:32

For Ds the growth spurt came towards the end of his 14s.
Some of his friends started shouting up a few months earlier or even later but at 13 they were still very much still children.

ClashCityRocker · 21/09/2020 08:33

I was looking at my old school year photos the other day - even in fifth form so 15/16 year olds it's still quite amazing to see the difference between the boys.

Some could easily pass for eighteen plus, some still look like slightly taller little boys.

The year ten picture most of the girls look a good 2-3 years older than the boys.
