13yo DS not really growing. Do they all get a growth spurt at some point?

I realise I'm probably over thinking this as per bloody usual but DS is mentioning it more often.
He's 5 6" and not had a growth spurt yet, his voice hasn't broken, only a couple of rogue spots and no underarm hair.

He"s noticed his mates are maturing faster and getting taller than him. But he's just nudged up in height over the last year. He doesn't have a massive appetite and doesn't sleep in.

When did everyone else's teens grow?

I wouldn't worry at 13. For context my ds1 is 17 and only 5.5. He didn't hit puberty at all til he was 15. He is an outlier though and is under an endocrinologist who concluded he is normal and will catch up, an x-ray at 16 revealed a bone age of 13 so he has plenty of growth in him. All other tests were completely normal. He may never have a spurt but just quietly continue growing. His 14 year old brother is 5'8 with his voice in his boots. Both are normal.

Thank you all. I will chill out a bit.

It's odd because I had to shave under my arms when I was 10 (no PCOS) yet DS doesn't have underarm hair yet.

His shoulders are getting broader though come to think of it. I do still occasionally plot his growth in his red book and he's still following the 80th centile. I'll wait and see how he sprouts....

Y9 is the school year when puberty deems to kick in for more of the boys. DD says that Y9s are funny because the friendship groups look like little boys hanging out with great big men, where Y8 is mostly little boys and Y10 is mostly big, deep-voiced teens who've gone through puberty.

OhMsBeliever · 21/09/2020 14:20

13 is still quite young. My youngest of 5 boys is 13, and only just taller than me. I'm 5ft 1. He was always smallest out of his brothers comparison wise. They're all between 5ft 8 - 10.

My eldest grew quite slowly. The other 3 went from shorter than me to towering over me in what seemed a matter of weeks. So I think my youngest is more like my oldest in that respect.

Girls develop much earlier than boys in most cases.

Dd2 s 12.5 y8. She looks like a woman. Big boobs, periods for a year and a half and taller than most of the boys. You can’t compare girls and boys.

The boys look really young in comparison. But by y11 they’ll nearly all have grown taller than her, have deep voices and be starting to shave.

Don’t worry, I’m sure in a year or two you’ll be cursing how fast he’s growing.

itssquidstella · 21/09/2020 14:26

Honestly OP, I'm a secondary school teacher and the boys hit puberty properly at any time between Y7 and Y12! I have taught 6'2" 12 year olds with full beards, and 5'6" 16 year olds with cheeks like a baby's bum.

I notice the change most when they come back into Y10 after the summer, or failing that, into Y11. 13 is quite early still.

pinkbalconyrailing · 21/09/2020 14:27

in my teen class the boys that age are half and half - half had an enormous growth spurt over summer, massive feet and hands, broke voices, fluff on face. the other half are still pre puberty and probably smell better.

yellowmaoampinball · 21/09/2020 14:33

This thread made me panic initially as my 13 yo DS is only just 5ft. No sign of puberty yet so I assumed he'd shoot up a bit then. I was reassured by the replies to see he's quite normal.

peakotter · 21/09/2020 14:36

The later the growth spurt, the taller they grow on average. Particularly for low BMI kids. I remember being taught this as a teen and it was definitely true for those I knew. It’s more common for small skinny 13yos to grow into tall adults.

rorosemary · 21/09/2020 14:42

How old was his dad when he shot up?

Hazelmazel · 21/09/2020 14:49

That's interesting peakotter. My DS is very very skinny so I expect he'll end up a giant!
I found this website which is interesting too

I’d have to look up photos to be sure of his age, but DS2 was just like that at 13-14 - he’s grown up now & about 6’3.

Also years ago I worked with a lad who was pretty short at 16 but had a very late growth spurt and ended up well over 6’

fantasmasgoria1 · 21/09/2020 14:54

My ds is 6 ft 3 now but only around 5 ft 5 at 13! But not everyone is meant to be tall. My Fiance is 5 ft 10 and to me that's fine. Are you both really tall? It doesn't always follow that children of tall parents are tall themselves.

megletthesecond · 21/09/2020 15:25

Thanks peak 😁. DS is whip thin and in rude health. Looks like he'll just take a bit longer then catch up.
We don't see his dad so I don't know when he grew, he's 6 5" though.

My DS didn’t have a growth spurt until he was 14. At 13 he was only 5’3 and now at 17 he’s stopped growing at 6’0. I wouldn’t be worried

Mintjulia · 21/09/2020 16:07

@bessiebigpants 😁 Gosh, I can't wait! 😁

You've cheered me up. My ds is 12 and not 5' yet. Some of his friends are a foot taller than him and there's a lot of angst going on.

LindaEllen · 21/09/2020 16:27

My DSS only really started to 'mature' in the physical sense when he was 15. Before that he was a chubby short arse (his words, not mine!) and now he's a 17yo beanpole with a deep voice and upper lip hair.

He will get there in his own time :).

IHateCoronavirus · 21/09/2020 18:03

Ah my 13 year old ds is 5ft 3” if that, and still very boy like . My 14 year old ds (17 months between them) Is 6ft 2” with a deep voice, moustache and the start of a beard!

It’ll come.

Passthecake30 · 21/09/2020 19:12

Hee hee @IHateCoronavirus that sounds funny, the way you describe it.
My dd is 18months younger than my son and is the same height and smells... ds doesn’t.
I’m 6ft, went through a later puberty than all the other girls in my class and ended up the tallest. There must be something in it...!

TheCovidiot · 27/09/2020 21:58

@IHateCoronavirus the beginning of a beard at 14?! Ds recently turned 15 and he’s about 5’10 (was 5’4 a year ago) and is only just starting to get some peach fuzz. Was your DS fairly early into puberty?

IHateCoronavirus · 28/09/2020 08:27

I wouldn’t say particularly early. Yr 8 his voice broke. He has always been tall and was a bit wiffy in yr 6

TheCovidiot · 29/09/2020 14:08

@IHateCoronavirus DS’s voice broke around yr8 too, even though he was quite late to puberty apart from that haha.
He was always so skinny too so buying clothes has been a nightmare even when he wasn’t particularly tall Envy

IHateCoronavirus · 29/09/2020 14:51

Yes! Skinny is very tricky. DS1 (the bearded one) is also skin and bone despite him eating us out of house and home.
Now that his shoulders have padded out small men’s looks good on him Tops wise and we get 30” waist 34” leg (needs to be worn with a belt) for jeans.

However for a long while he looked like a clothed broom with a head! Grin

steppemum · 29/09/2020 14:59

They definitely have growth spurts later. Girls first, - ages 11-14 mostly, then boys, more like ages 13-16.

Ds is now 6'3".
At age 15 he grew smoething like 5 inches in one year. The food he consumed was staggering. I knew he had stopped when over night his appetite cut in half!
He then slowly filled out (was very skinny at 15)

My nephew did the same, very small right up until about 14 then suddenly grew.

I think he sounds like he has not quite hit puberty yet, once that kicks in all sorts will start to happen. But he is on the young side for boys. They are definitly later.
And ds only really stopped when he was 17. He has now been same size and foot size for a whole year. So I think that is it!
