do you think £2.50/hr is reasonable to pay a babysitter

becasue my dd thinks it's a bit cheap.

she normally gets between £3.50-£5.00/hr

She's nearly 16 and has done firstaid and babysitting course.

This is for babysitting early evening, child awake.

Would you think it cheeky if she told them she actually charges £3.50?

my son is JUST 15 and gets £5
2.50 is a joke poor girl

Tortington · 05/10/2007 23:54

do an evening rate from 7 - 12 £25

if earlier or later £5 ph - if come back inbetween - hard shit

LyraSilvertongue · 05/10/2007 23:54

£2.50 is half what sitters charge where I live.

hana · 05/10/2007 23:55

yes, I wouldn't pay such a small amount

gomez · 05/10/2007 23:58

Far from reasonable. £5.00 an hour I think.

brimfull · 05/10/2007 23:58

I thought it was cheap too.

She may pluck up the courage to say

"Actually I don't mind babysitting but I charge £3.50/hr.I don't mind if you'd like to find someone else if that doesn't suit you"

i pay a fourteen year old £3 ph to hang out with ds for a couple of hours in the early evening, whilst i am in the house, making supper or whatever, but very definitely around iyswim.

so yes, i think its a bit cheap

gigglewitch · 05/10/2007 23:59

custy's got it. sod the hourly rate and go for the diplomatic "evening babysitter rate" or some such fancy title.she's qualified, that's worth paying for anywhere in the country!

Jackstini · 06/10/2007 00:00

Think a fiver an hour is about right.
Minimum wage for 16 yrs is 3.40 so at least that...!

OverRated · 06/10/2007 00:04

No. I used to get paid 2.50 an hour when I was a teenager, about 15 yrs ago.

brimfull · 06/10/2007 00:04

custy's evening flat rate of £25 for 7-12 is £5/hr ...am I being thick here. What's the difference between that and hrly rate?

OP posts:
gigglewitch · 06/10/2007 00:38

what i meant (and presumably custy, too)was that the hourly rate they're offering is nowhere near that. if she would rather avoid a confrontation over the hourly rate, then change the point of the discussion - introduce the idea of an evening rate and hope they grab that rather than haggling over how much per hour, minute etc. And if they don't use all of the allocated time slot, quids in for babysitter.

pneumalifenewname · 06/10/2007 00:41

Er, minimum wage mean anything to the employers? Depends if they want £2.50 worth of childcare or not

brimfull · 06/10/2007 00:53

giggle-iswym

trouble is it's between the hrs of 5 and 7pm
so maybe £10 would be decent flat rate

£2.50 is not enough at all. I would expect to pay £4-5 ph. If i cant afford it i wouldnt go out.

hamabeads · 06/10/2007 06:49

Usually £5 or £6 per hour here

harpsicorpsecarrier · 06/10/2007 07:16

yes £5 per hour here too

foofi · 06/10/2007 07:26

£2.50? That's ridiculous. Don't let her go out for less than £5.

Blackduck · 06/10/2007 07:29

2.50 is ridiculously cheap...I pay a £5 an hour

heifer · 06/10/2007 07:31

Hell no - I am sure I got more than than around 25 years ago!

I would say at least £4.00...

fawkeoff · 06/10/2007 08:14

i would say that £5 an hour is reasonable for a teenager, well worth the money considering she has done first aid and a babysitting course. They are paying a teenager that is prepared to deal with problems unlikesome other teens who just babysit for the cash, food, internet, and telephone

GrapefruitMoon · 06/10/2007 08:24

£4-5 an hour around here too...

colditz · 06/10/2007 08:24

£6 per hour? You kidding? Some 50 year old women get paid less than that!

£4 an hour much more reasonable. Once the kids are in bed it's perely a matter of MTV isn't it? Babysitting is an easy job.

Also depends where you are in the country - normal rate for London would be closer to qualified nany rate in Skegness, for example, where teenagers are plenty and the work is seasonal.

colditz · 06/10/2007 08:25

Ok missed the courses ..

£5 doable though still steep IMHO

FrannyandZombie · 06/10/2007 08:27

£3.50 would be minimum I think. I think a nearly 16 year old with a first aid course etc is worth at least that.
