First periods

Hope this is not too gritty a question. i have an 11-year-old daughter and know that her periods could start at any time. I want to have some sanitary towels in the cupboard but having been years since I used the things I don't know what product would be most appropriate for a young girl. Can anyone make any recommendations?

I started at 11 & went straight to tampons. I was a dancer & there was no way I was going to mess around with pads. There's no reason why they can't be used from the beginning (none of my friends used pads).

I have a ten year old who seems to be about to start her period ( although we are never sure). I have found a site called POGO which has a starter pack with a case / different size pads/ 12 month planner to look at first yearly cycle/some simple tips on your first period. The pack is £14.95 but my daughter thought it was great.

Hi Ben

Go to POGO a site where your daughter can find out info on stating her first period and where you can buy her pack with everything she will need for her first period.

Always Ultra with Freshelle are a brilliant idea for use at school as she will have a wet wipe to freshen up with.

My DD gets her friend to turn the hand drier on when she has to rip the wrapper off.

I got her a cheap make up bag to keep her pads and spare nickers in for school. Anybody who sees the make up bag in her school bag thinks it is her make up.

All great advice!

I'm about to go and buy the 'just in case' back for my almost-10 y/o step-daughter, as she's had The Puberty Talk at school and wants to be on the safe side.

Sadly, her mother passed away many years ago, so I have no idea 'hereditarily' (that can't be a word: sorry) of when she's likely to start, but she has begun some fattening out, but not much.

So - Always Ultra + some night stuff it is. Thanks, everyone!

Eli, how about you buy two or three packets of different makes like AliB suggested? Your daughter could take a look at each sort and try them all. Also I think my DD got given some samples at school to try. When she's made her choice, she can just keep a couple in her school bag just in case....As for tampons, I think we waited about a year until she wanted to have a go with them.
