First periods

Hope this is not too gritty a question. i have an 11-year-old daughter and know that her periods could start at any time. I want to have some sanitary towels in the cupboard but having been years since I used the things I don't know what product would be most appropriate for a young girl. Can anyone make any recommendations?

FastasleepTheInsomniac · 13/04/2005 16:24

Don't start the mooncup episode again!! Nooo not the nightmares...

dyzzidi · 13/04/2005 16:26

I've never heard of anything like that before and seriously thought it was a joke.

Even rang my head office to make the girls there have a look at the site. It is now the cause of much amusement in Lincoln, Livingston and London

My daughter is 13 and started her periods last month. I bought her the always ultra thin ones, which she ound comfortable. She keeps a couple in her rucksack so she does not have to ask the teachers. Her older helped her and suggested thats what she should do.

jampots · 13/04/2005 21:31

my dd started last year at 11 and she uses Always Ultra - she does use night time ones for night because she can be quite heavy too and it saves an awful lot of fuss that way. Thinking back to her first one it was more of a browny red discharge to be honest so a pant liner may at least save her undergarments and she wont feel horrid but to be honest a discreet towel just kept in her bag really shouldnt be much bigger to be honest.

QueenEagle · 13/04/2005 21:32

My dd is 13 and started her periods in January this year. It lasted only a day. The next one was last week and lasted for a full 4 days and she used tampax slims and got on absolutely fine with them.

Davzmum · 14/04/2005 04:43

Last month was my dd first one and it was just like a show off and on for about 5 days but this month she is "on" with a vengeance poor love.....not stomach ache she reckons though which Im pleased about

Hi, I'm new to MN. My 14 year old daughter had her first period last week. We had a range of products for her to try, she prefers tampons as she is very sporty, but she used towels too as a "just in case" until she gets used to dealing with this regularly. Bless her, my baby's growing up!

edenverity · 21/04/2005 14:38

hello, I have a 13yr old who started her periods in feb. She is not in the least bothered and takes it all in her stride

AnnaInManchester · 08/05/2005 23:05

I started when I was 9 yo too. I was very tall as a youngster, developed boobs at around 9yo too. i used to hate swimming with school incase the boys noticed and never took my jumper off because I thought the boys would be able to see my bra!!! I used Always Ultra until now, at the age of 21, ive just started to use applicator tampons which are superdrugs own brand.

lyra41 · 04/06/2005 17:27

Hi Anna

I'm in Manchester too, and my 9 year old started about 6 months ago. She was heartbroken at first, why me, it's not fair, I don't want to grow up so fast etc., but now seems to take it in her stride. They were 6 wks apart at first, but this last one came after only 2 wks. Hope they'll settle down soon.

I wish the primary school she goes to was more switched on to early puberty. Girls and boys have to get changed for PE in the classroom together, which I don't think is appropriate any more. I think I'll go in and talk to the teacher about it, but I def don't want my dd singled out.

I have to say I feel kinda sad for her, I wish she didn't have it to deal with so young, but what can you do, but be positive and encouraging.

jessicasmummy · 04/06/2005 17:37

Shocked at 9yr olds changing in the classroom for PE - when i was at primary school, for year 5 upwards, the girls were sent to the "cloakroom" to get changed and the boys stayed in the classroom.

colditz · 04/06/2005 17:39

When I was at primary school, we changed in front of the boys until we balked and refused to do pe.

And they wonder why girls don't like pe!

Hi, so glad I've found MN. Pretty sure my daughter's going to be starting her periods soon. Shes 10. Any advice on the best 'first time' pads to use. I heard the Always Ultra Thins made you sweat and gave rashes?

blossomsmine · 17/06/2007 23:46

My dd just started this weekend she is 13 and a half. I am so sad about it as she is growing up and i feel really emotional about it, stupid i know! She is using bodyform slim during the day and always night. That is all i have bought this weekend. Also, we got caught out as i didn't have anything at home, the poor love didn't know what to do. So i would say make sure you have a stock ready!
