Alarm clock which wakes a teen

I feel silly asking this but what alarm do your teens use which actually wakes them in the morning? DS age 13 is a nightmare to get up at 7am. He doesn't hear/respond to his phone alarm. Is it just age. As he gets older will it wake him?!

We have found the ones that gradually light up most effective.

cricketmum84 · 26/09/2019 22:41

I use the tried and tested method of shouting at his bedroom door until he gets up. Cold sponge if that doesn't work 😂😂

ReallyRatherBlonde · 26/09/2019 22:45

An old fashioned one with the bells on top...put on the other side of the room so he has to get out of bed to turn it off. That's what my mum did for my sister when she wouldn't/couldn't get up as a teenager

Threeminis · 26/09/2019 22:45

I've been looking for one too op.
My ds is in a high sleeper so no surface for a light up one. He's also not allowed his phone in his room at night.

MrsBlondie · 26/09/2019 22:47

I do the shouting method now but Im tired of it!!

13yo - a feather dropping 3 doors down.

15yo - the smell of bacon.

MazDazzle · 26/09/2019 22:50

I agree with SirVixofVixHall, a dawn simulator with alarm is what you need. Lumea do decent ones.

We attached a shelf on to the side of my DD’s high sleeper Threeminus. Might be worth looking into.

IHaveBrilloHair · 26/09/2019 22:51

A Lumie is good for more gentle waking, but in all honesty, it's just that they don't want to get up!

ExpletiveDelighted · 26/09/2019 22:52

Mine have battery operated digital ones (no phones in rooms overnight). They both wake to them pretty reliably, but if they don't then I wake them.

WilkosWanderer · 27/09/2019 07:19

My 12 year old just uses his phone alarm system.

sockittome123 · 27/09/2019 07:22

You can get really piercing alarms on the Amazon Echo, ones that will get louder and louder every time they play. I find that I wake up on the first time anyway, and shouting "Alexa, stop/shut up! (delete according to to what day it is)" wakes me up properly.

I'm a bugger for sleeping through alarms. I instled the 'puzzle alarm clock' app. It sets a simple puzzle everyday, and the alarm won't switch off unless I solve it. It also has a 'scan a barcode' system. Ie, I have to walk to the kitchen and scan a barcode for it to switch. Also it asks for a response five minutes after turning it off. No click, and it starts going again. Make sure he isn't putting the phone next to him in bed. Essential that it's a reach away.

Good luck!

BrokenWing · 27/09/2019 07:39

Tell them if they don't get up with the alarm/when you call them it must be they are too tired and need to get to bed earlier (without phone/screens in room). Works like magic.

stucknoue · 27/09/2019 07:40

Ordinary radio alarms at that age, they have echo dots now

babbydriver · 27/09/2019 07:57

Mine have echo dots and sleep through the alarms on that Hmm. I have to get them up most days which is shit on the odd day I have off work and can lie in

RedSheep73 · 27/09/2019 08:02

Mine can sleep through anything including fire alarms. I just open his curtains and make a lot of noise I'm afraid.

MrsBlondie · 27/09/2019 22:58

Thanks all. Seems Im not alone in this pain in the mornings!

My ds alarm clock is me and I have to tell him multiple times so I hate to wonder what he will do when he lives alone.

Passthecake30 · 28/09/2019 18:58

Cheaply battery alarm clock works here, but he's only 11, so not sleeping in too much (yet!)

MyDcAreMarvel · 28/09/2019 19:01

If you take the phone out of his room he would be less tired and most likely wake to any alarm.
Why are you letting a child have a mobile in their room overnight?

MrsBlondie · 28/09/2019 23:03

@MyDcAreMarvel I didn't say he had his phone in his room overnight actually - thanks very much.

MyDcAreMarvel · 29/09/2019 11:46

So you just put it there in the morning to try and wake him up?

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 29/09/2019 11:48

I used one of the dogs, only thing that worked.

ThePhoenixRises · 29/09/2019 11:50

Change the alarm tone, I have to change mine regularly otherwise I get used to the tone and sleep through it.

NorthernSpirit · 29/09/2019 16:11

Why are you taking responsibility for waking your 13 year old up.

Not sure why he has a phone in his room (I don’t know any 13 YO who can regulate screen time).

No phone in his room at night. Put an alarm clock in there, he sets the alarm and if he doesn’t get up and is late for school he faces the consequences. He needs to start taking some responsibility.
