Alarm clock which wakes a teen

I feel silly asking this but what alarm do your teens use which actually wakes them in the morning? DS age 13 is a nightmare to get up at 7am. He doesn't hear/respond to his phone alarm. Is it just age. As he gets older will it wake him?!

An alarm clock that sounds like the teens ringtone.

MrsBlondie · 29/09/2019 22:13

Oh my goodness people. He doesn't have his phone in his room overnight.
But thats not what this post was about anyway really!!! Talk about judgement.
We put it in a few mornings with the alarm but it didn't wake him.
And@NorthernSpirit at age 13 i think we do have responsibility to get him up and to school actually.

DS still has his battery Lego darth vader alarm which bleeps loudly. Plus a lumie sunrise alarm.
FWIW I have two alarms, a radio on one side and a lumie on the other.

ThePhoenixAlwaysRises · 30/09/2019 12:56

*Argos do a cheap plug in one

RubbingHimSourly · 01/10/2019 00:56

DD has one that runs around her bedroom. She has to catch it to turn it off

RubbingHimSourly

Where did you get that one from please?

RubbingHimSourly · 01/10/2019 09:20

It's this one.

www.amazon.co.uk/Stern-Schatz-GmbH-10497BL-Clocky/dp/B001M44YM8/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?s=gateway&keywords=alarm+clock+with+wheels&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1569917865&sr=8-6

There are cheaper / rip off versions too but I just went with that one. It works well too.

An earlier bedtime surely is the obvious answer? Ideally you should be waking naturally about the time you need to get up.

A 13 year old needs a lot of sleep and it sounds like many on this thread aren’t getting enough.

BarbariansMum · 01/10/2019 16:09

A teen who has had enough sleep will hear a standard alarm. Bring bedtime forward by an hour and see if that helps. My 13 year old sets his own bedtime but that privilege is earned by him getting himself up and ready for school on time. As he gets up at 6.45am that means he often now chooses to switch off at 9.30pm during the week (Fri/Sat are later).

SoupDragon · 01/10/2019 16:12

I used my Google Home to broadcast "get up!" To DS's Mini one. That worked.

I wonder if the sleeping through an alarm thing is the same as why children sleep through smoke alarms? They don't hear things at that frequency well. They do hear someone shouting though.

Tensixtysix · 01/10/2019 16:16

My kids used to have a 'helicopter alarm'.
Basically the alarm would go off and the 'key' would fly off and hide somewhere in the bedroom.
You couldn't shut it off until you found it Grin.

@Tensixtysix that sounds like a good incentive to have a tidy room too!

Lunafortheloveogod · 01/10/2019 16:24

A wet German Shepard or Saint Bernard was a family tradition.. even dry those were buggers. I could sleep through anything that didn’t cause physical discomfort to quite some level until I was 17ish.. even then there were spells I missed most of a day.

I think they make alarms that shake your bed too now.. much less work that a dog but he might need something to pull him back to hearing something.

bigbluebus · 01/10/2019 16:44

My DS slept through most alarm clocks (and the smoke alarm) until be bought 2 separate clocks with the bells on top. He sets both 10 mins apart - the 2nd one he has to get out of bed to switch it off. Seemed to do the trick.
Remember once DD was rushed to hospital in middle of the night. DS didn't wake as we left the house. We left the landline phone and a note right next to his bed. Took me 30 mins of ringing him the next morning before he answered - he didn't hear the phone!

schnubbins · 01/10/2019 17:00

I got a Sonic Boom on amazon for my sons who would sleep through an earthquake. It also has a beget that rattles under the mattress. It wakes our neighbours also!

Cooroo · 03/10/2019 10:47

Teens' body clocks are proven to be set later so remember it isn't your DC's fault! Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker has good stuff on this. Going to bed earlier doesn't really help.

helenhighgate · 05/10/2019 12:12

It’s so hard! Use a radio alarm and a Lumie light. I walk in at 7 with a cup of tea say morning and then leave the room - she then gets herself up. Most effective is the Lumie light bringing her out of a deeper sleep to a lighter one! Good luck.
