Handy tips from your teen (or yourself) to my teen for her first festival

She has just turned 17 and will be attending Boardmasters next week with three friends.

She has ordered a small locker, is taking a (excuse me if I have the term wrong) fanny pack / bum bag for wallet and phone, has got a solar powered phone charger, is taking a dry bag for her belongings, has a reasonable tent (Coleman Kentmere 3 plus) for her and a friend to share, has wellies (as weather is showery) and all the other bare essentials

Any tips on what to / what not to do? /take?

Many thanks

Thanks, those look like a sensible buy Sleep

I must alert her to the possibility of her drink being spiked - particularly since she will probably ask slightly older friends of friends to buy the odd beer for her

yes, just tell her to be mindful and not to leave her drink unattended at any time x

Always carry tissues in her pocket in case the loos have run out of toilet paper

Keep some emergency cash in her bra. Bum bags can get pickpocketed.

Second ear plugs, both for loud bands and for sleeping.

Thanks slug

Before she walks away from her tent for the first time make a note of landmarks so she can relocate easy. ( eg left hand side 6 rows back from gate, near large blue tent)

Take nothing of value but if she does keep nothing valuable in the tent unattended.

Bog roll (so much)
Sandwich bags or dog poo bags to put the loo roll in (in case it rains and your bag gets wet)
Wellies
More socks than you think you will need
Bin liners
Wet wipes
Face wipes
Every type of wipe!
Dry shampoo
Power brick for phone (better than solar powered)
Waterproof (ponchos are best as they go over your bag)

Have been to millions of festivals!
Ps a lock for the tent is good, although if people really want your stuff they will just slash it open!

Flag and flagpole so they can find their way back to their tent.
Wet wipes.
Loo roll.
Comfy shoes. Lots of socks.
Warm jacket
Waterproof

Great tips here. One suggestion I'd make is rubble sacks rather than bin bags - they're the super heavy duty ones. Completely waterproof and a godsend for:

  • Fixing a tent (when paired with duct tape)
  • Keeping things dry in a storm
  • Sitting on - pop a folded one in her bum bag in the morning and even if it's muddy everywhere she still has something waterproof to sit on!
ThereWillBeAdequateFood · 31/07/2019 16:27

Always sleep with your valuables at the bottom of your sleeping bag.

Go to the furthest away portaloo. Most people choose the closest and they get disgusting v quickly.

BinkySodPlop · 31/07/2019 17:19

Travel John - really useful for early mornings in the tent before the loos have been emptied.

Plastic bags - I know we're all cutting down, but something to put rubbish in around camp, damp / wet clothes / shoes to come home with is v useful. Also for taking stuff to/from showers if she has one

As others have said, tissues and anti-bac.

A reusable water bottle - and use it! It's very easy to become seriously dehydrated at a festival, even without huge amounts of alcohol. You're outside all day, with little/no shade, so if there's sun, it'll be on her.

Sun cream, hat etc..

LimitIsUp · 31/07/2019 18:25

Hadn't considered multiple pairs of socks!

Didn't realise about the flag pole and windsock either...

Is it true that people nick your sleeping bag and air bed from your tent?

Brightly coloured duct tape to help her recognise her tent!

It's not unknown! My brothers mate had all his stuff nicked and we had to scrape round to help him out.
There was a warning from our police about a local festival about people buying tickets just to gain entry to the festival. They had no interest in the band or shows but go there to rob.

SwiftAnchor · 31/07/2019 19:35

Don't lock your tent, it just makes people think you have something worth stealing, then it's more likely to be slashed open.

LimitIsUp · 01/08/2019 11:48

She'll not be locking her tent then, and I will ensure that she takes a spare sleeping bag and airbed and keeps it in the boot of her friend's car in case of need!

a folding camp chair for sitting outside the tent. Agree warm jacket for night and extra socks.

Portable chargers - literally life savers! I'd get her two and tell her to give one to a mate in case they get separated. It sounds silly but even as an adult it's really disorienting to be lost at a festival especially after drinks obviously. Hope she has fun and stays safe Smile
