Posting here since as parents of teens you may have had the car insurance problem.

Okay, we weren't expecting a cheap insurance given dd has a 2018 VW Polo Beats, so the replacement cost of the car is quite high. Also, whilst it is a 1 litre engine it is turbo. However dh has been given a quote of £4,400 from the brokers. We had been anticipating (a still eye watering) £2K perhaps, but £4,400 Shock? If she had previously driven and been banned for drink driving her insurance would probably have been less!

Fortunately she has only just started to learn to drive so we have time to work on this. Any advice please re getting a better deal?

Drive a more sensible car for a couple of years.

Frenchfancy · 18/07/2019 10:32

If cost is a concern then sell the polo and buy a cheaper car.

hsegfiugseskufh · 18/07/2019 10:33

if you can afford a 2018 car for your teenager, surely you can afford the expensive insurance to go with it?

if not get a different car.

ItsReallyOnlyMe · 18/07/2019 10:36

She needs a black box. This will reduce the insurance to a manageable level. Just google 'young driver car insurance' - and you can get a number of quotes.

Pinkyyy · 18/07/2019 10:39

Try insuring it in your name and adding her as a named driver. It often works out cheaper that way. Or you could try a black box policy.

Mrsjayy · 18/07/2019 10:39

She needs an older car My dds had 10 yr old cars when they passed their tests and even then the insurance was high if you don't want to get rid of her car she needs a black box

Anyat212 · 18/07/2019 10:40

Not gunna lie slightly envious your daughter has a brand new car - As her first?!

Have you tried adding yourself or husband on as a named driver? That should cut the cost I imagine. Otherwise I agree with above and selling it for a cheaper car. Insurance costs for new drivers are a joke tho!

hsegfiugseskufh · 18/07/2019 10:40

Try insuring it in your name and adding her as a named driver

that's called insurance fraud.

ExCwmbranDweller · 18/07/2019 10:40

Black box/add you and your husband onto her insurance. That about halved DS1's.

Also after a year of driving impeccably with the black box DS1's insurance dropped by about 60% even taking his father and I off the insurance and removing the black box. So maybe worth sucking up the first year to get the no claims bonus etc.

How many companies have you shopped around, my boys both have newish cars with good engines and it hasn't been nearly as much as that.

hsegfiugseskufh · 18/07/2019 10:43

its not envy at all, I think you're being silly to be honest.

They're not motivated by envy, just common sense...

LimitIsUp · 18/07/2019 10:44

I was expecting it to be expensive Mrsjayy - but this was a revelation! We will have to suck it up but try and manage it down with a black box. If anyone can recommend a particularly good insurance company they have experience of that would be most appreciated

Whilst putting yourself as the main driver is not legal - you can add yourself as a named driver (and any other experienced driver at the same address) this will reduce the insurance.

itbemay · 18/07/2019 10:45

It is the car though that is causing the high premium. My DD has a 7 year old Fiat, her insurance was £1800 for the first year, now its almost halved.

itbemay · 18/07/2019 10:46

Try Adrian Flux

ruralcat · 18/07/2019 10:46

You need to shop around on a comparison site. That's a ridiculous price. We got insurance for under 2k on a bmw 318.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 18/07/2019 10:48

Nope. Nothing else you can do other than change the car.

My son's quotes come in (age 18 newly passed test) as £1400. He will be driving a 2002 Suziki Ignis. I'm more than happy with that. If I put other cars in it is much higher.

welshweasel · 18/07/2019 10:49

Why would I be envious of your kid’s car? Bizarre. We used insurance comparison sites to put in all sorts of cars to see which were affordable, before buying one for DSS when he was 18. I thought that is what most people do. The fact of that matter is that it’s the car that is making it expensive. Changing it for a more sensible car would make the quote cheaper. Black box may help a bit but usually no more than 10% reduction.

hsegfiugseskufh · 18/07/2019 10:49

a lot of it will be to do with your postcode / age / make of car - ie things that you cannot or wont change. So people saying "I used x company and insured x car for 2 grand" is totally unhelpful to you because your daughters circumstances are different.

for example, my insurance went up by over £200 for the year when I moved - to a nicer area, and started parking my car on the drive instead of the road. Sometimes insurance makes no sense!
