Posting here since as parents of teens you may have had the car insurance problem.

Okay, we weren't expecting a cheap insurance given dd has a 2018 VW Polo Beats, so the replacement cost of the car is quite high. Also, whilst it is a 1 litre engine it is turbo. However dh has been given a quote of £4,400 from the brokers. We had been anticipating (a still eye watering) £2K perhaps, but £4,400 Shock? If she had previously driven and been banned for drink driving her insurance would probably have been less!

Fortunately she has only just started to learn to drive so we have time to work on this. Any advice please re getting a better deal?

"it is important, but you don't need to judge anyone else for their choices. "

Oh my, the irony JoanMavisIceCreamGirl. May I quote you:

"I think you're being silly to be honest."

"Oh god you're one of them"

No judgement there then Hmm

The car could well be staying........

On your drive when she fails for the 1st time.....the 2nd time.....even the 3rd time.

By the time she passes you'll be buying her a 21 plate VW.

PestoCaffeinisto · 18/07/2019 11:34

Wow! £440 per month on car insurance alone, without factoring any other car/driving costs Shock
Hope she’s got a good job Wink

hsegfiugseskufh · 18/07/2019 11:35

yes, but the difference is these are people you claim to be friends with, in your real life. You clearly think they don't give a shit about your children.

I just think you've a bad attitude, but equally im not pretending to be friends with you.

LimitIsUp · 18/07/2019 11:36

Why on earth would you presume she won't pass until 2021. What a fatuous remark

OP posts:
LimitIsUp · 18/07/2019 11:37

There not my friends Joan and I don't much care for your attitude tbh. You are very confrontation - are you having a bad day? I've reported you.

confrontational

im not confrontational, I am just telling you things you don't want to hear.

is it parked in the street? That makes a difference. Def yes to dashcam. I would recommend thinking about a smaller engined car.

PestoCaffeinisto · 18/07/2019 11:41

If you were you expecting a premium of around 2K, why don’t you use one of those original quotes?

Surely the broker’s cut can’t be as much as the original premium itself?

applepieicecream · 18/07/2019 11:43

I can’t believe the venom on here from people just because the OP bought her daughter a nice car. I agree a turbo might not be ideal - best insurance will be a group 1 or 2 car and polo’s can fall into this category. I would really shop around OP and if you really can’t get the cost down look at changing it for a lower spec polo. FWIW I know lots of 17 year olds with polo’s they’re an excellent first car but more than we want to spend on our child’s first car which yes we will be buying, insuring and running

hsegfiugseskufh · 18/07/2019 11:46

the problem is not the fact that its a "nice car" though is it.

If op has got that kind of money to spend, fine, but it doesn't make it a sensible first car and really op, or her dd should have done their research if insurance cost was important to them.

It is a little silly to buy a car without considering that first, for anyone who drives!

Mrsjayy · 18/07/2019 11:47

Nobody is bring venomous people are pointing out if you buy a new car with turbo: then insurance is going to be sky high for new drivers how is facts venemous ?

LimitIsUp · 18/07/2019 11:47

"I can’t believe the venom on here from people just because the OP bought her daughter a nice car."

Thanks applepieicecream - but I can believe it - been here 17 years and have seen it all before Grin

Look into the Pass Plus scheme, this was equivalent of DS having one year no claim discount on his first insurance. This was a fair few years ago though.

chzarind · 18/07/2019 11:50

Direct line insured DD on a 19 plate FIAT 500 for £1300; worth getting a quote from them. All the young driver specific insurance companies came in over £2k

newmomof1 · 18/07/2019 11:51

@LimitIsUp do you have a garage she could park in?

The options are driveway or road - there's not an option for 'secure driveway' (which is silly really).

Have you added you and DH as named drivers?

Have you checked compare the market? Go Girl was cheapest for me for the first year as they aim their insurance at young women.

swisscheeseplant · 18/07/2019 11:51

We used Insurethebox for DC’s first year of Insurance and tried adding additional named drivers to see how they affected the premium.

TheQueef · 18/07/2019 11:52

Change car or suck it up.
Try the guide on money saving expert first.
If you are willing to change car a VW Fox is one of the cheapest to insure.

LimitIsUp · 18/07/2019 11:55

I'll state again for clarity:

I am happy with the car. Its staying. I am prepared to pay the cost to insure it and recognise that a different, older car would have a lower premium. No, it wasn't silly or a waste of money to purchase it. I am simply asking for advice (which I have received from some posters) and the benefit of people's experiences, re how to get a better quote. Realistically a better quote will still be expensive but it could be a fair bit less than £4,400.

OP posts:
mummabubs · 18/07/2019 11:57

Definitely don't do what Pinkyyy suggested, as others have said this is insurance fraud (known as "fronting"). Get caught doing that and police will not be kind and you'd really struggle to ever insure her again. Black box is a good idea or brace yourself for an expensive couple of years, then it will come down significantly as long as she keeps claim-free :)

LimitIsUp · 18/07/2019 11:57

newmom - yes there is a garage. Without spelling it out and giving some posters the opportunity to wet themselves with glee, there are certain things that make driveways secure.

We struggled with both lads when we ( bought and) paid for their insurance.
Initially Ds1 passed at 17 and my car is just a regular Ford a couple of years old no modifications. We were going to allow him to have the car when I didnt need it. We live in an area that insurance is tmriddculas high compared to our neighbouring towns. The wanted £12 000. Yrs 12k!
It was easier to buy him a newer car. Even looking at cars 6 years old insurance was around 6k.
We got him a new car and the insurance was 2.5k with a black box and 12,000 miles. The following year it was £1,900. He pays himself now so I'm not sure how much it us.
Ds2 pased at 18. We went through the same again and bought him a Megane. The insurance was £2,600 for the first year and now it is £2 100 with 12,000 miles on a black box.
However circumstances have changed and we are going to have to re negotiate the miles as it is no where near enough.

78percentLindt · 18/07/2019 11:58

We found that some Companies don't like young drivers. Our company added DS to my insurance when he passed the test at 17, but they made it clear they did not want his business if he got a car.
Check on Money saving expert for on line search engines and they also list some companies that the search engines don't consider.
DS has just moved to Adrian Flux from Admiral. He used Admiral when he bought a Golf GTI ( I know!) but he was 21. They do 10 month policies and then give a full year's bonus. He found adding us as named drivers reduced the cost initially. Also Pass Plus can help with some companies.
DS 's friend , who goes for the souped up numbers used Adrian Flux from quite a young age.
