My dd1 used to do muay Thai (for 3 yrs), swimming lessons (for 5 yrs), athetics (for 1 Yr) and football (for 1 Yr).

She is very good in aĺl but she got bored....but she doesn't know what else to do.

I've suggested art classes as she does enjoy that...but no.

She is a popular girl in her school but she "is not good making friends".. They are her words..

She is on her phone alot but she is not going out

i don't know how old your DD is - but here's what mine did from primary school up to the age of 18

  1. Swimming - both for around 7-10 years until they were fully competent in the water. Lessons from 4-11, some competitive swimming for DD
  2. Netball from 4-20 for DD. She loves netball
  3. Hockey from 6-18 for DD.
  4. Tennis from 4-date for both kids including tennis camps through the summer. They both love tennis
  5. Rugby from 6-18 for DS but he never went to rugby club - just played at school
  6. Cricket from 7-18 for DS - he did go to cricket club and enjoyed the game.
  7. Music. Both did piano from 4-18. DS did singing as well. Cathedral choir from 6-12, plus multiple singing groups since. Music is a key part of their lives
  8. Mindgames. Both were taught chess. Both were taught bridge. Bridge is something DS excels at and it is his major hobby

With hobbies I always tried to encourage those that were life-long rather than time limited. So I always tried to encourage things like tennis, swimming, music, mind-games but I was a bit less enthusiastic about things like rugby which you have to stop playing in your twenties (plus it's dangerous).

it's common for children to try lots of things before they find the thing that they like.

I think the most important thing is that she wants to do it, interests come and go here and I think that is fine, there is so much to choose from in today's world.

biglips · 08/09/2018 08:39

The box..... Yes I agree. she doesn't know what to do next so I'm just suggesting a couple of things to her into see if anything she like to try

DS (16) hates all sports but has now discovered performing arts so is really into musical theatre. he plays bass guitar and drums.

whiteroseredrose · 08/09/2018 09:13

DS learned piano and did school. rugby until Y10. He also enjoyed photography so went out with a friend taking photographs.

He also loved computers but programming not gaming, so self taught a number of computer languages. He and school friends won a competition with that with a mobile phone each as prize.

DD now just does Stagecoach which is singing / dancing / acting and helps out at Rainbows.

She did karate for a few years but dropped out when it became more about actual fighting!

Aragog · 08/09/2018 09:16

Dd (16) enjoys drama and singing - she goes to a theatre group for both of these once a week.

That's the only organised type activity she does, though she's being doing that since she was around 5/6 years old.

biglips · 08/09/2018 21:44

Interesting

Thanks again

My DD did cubs, scouts and now does explorers. Loads of activities and travel and camps! Been to Italy with them this summer, next year USA. She's 15. Been an absolute lifesaver for her during tough years of anxiety and school refusal. They do D of E as well. Apart from that just Netflix and phone!

KingscoteStaff · 09/09/2018 08:24

DD14 does Netball, Cricket and Hockey (school and club), helps with Lighting and Scenary for school shows ( her friends are acting types) and goes to a lot of films - she got a membership card for her last birthday and is taking full advantage of it!

DS16 does Rugby + cricket (school and club), plays electric bass in the school big band and cello in a couple of orchestras/chamber groups. He is also starting to get involved with the MUNGA set up.

I wish they’d do D of E, but neither fancies it.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 09/09/2018 08:31

DS does Cricket, both after school and with a Cricket Club, and Explorers and will try for the other 22 hours a day on the Xbox if he can. We’ve introduced a couple of technology breaks recently so that we see him and remember what he looks like.

DD is a bit younger but does Guides, Cricket and climbing.

biglips · 09/09/2018 11:35

Do you mind putting a link of the explorers on please.

OP posts:
biglips · 09/09/2018 11:37

Do you mind putting a link of the explorers on please. No problem at all it’s here Smile

DS loves it. They’re going to the Cinema tomorrow and they’ve got a sailing course planned already for this term. His group has a good mix of both sexes. I’ve never known him spend so long in the bathroom getting ready Grin
