He showers every morning at 7am and uses Mitchum roll on after the shower. When he arrives home from school at 5 he honks of BO. Really bad. I have to make him shower again as soon as he comes in because the smell takes over the whole room. I’ve told him to take his roll on and wipes to school with him and he says he uses them but I don’t think he does.

Is there a better anti perspirant/deodorant I can buy him?

Have a look at the soap thread and move him to bar soap, loads of MNers found it helpful with bo.

Are his shirts stinky under the arms? Soak in dissolvable aspirin and wash with loads of stain remover and Dettol anti bacterial and see if it's those?

Sugarhunnyicedtea · 14/05/2018 19:46

My son was like this for a few months at 12. He doesn't smell at all now - I think it must be hormonal

The3 · 14/05/2018 19:49

Shower with soap last thing at night and apply the deodorant then. Mitchum is most effective applied the night before.

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 14/05/2018 19:54

Oh it could be the shirts! He has a fresh one every day. They are washed with Daz biological, bit of zoflora and vanish gold.

Will try the night showering and soap. Thank you.

A way to tell if it's the shirts... iron the underarm. The warmth of the iron really brings out any lingering sweat smells.

Slightlyperturbedowlagain · 14/05/2018 19:56

(You probably are already but make sure he is actually washing his armpits thoroughly, just speaking from experience Hmm)

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 14/05/2018 19:56

Thanks pickle! Will try that.

slightly I have threatened to stand in the bathroom and scrub him myself. I feel bad if it’s not his fault Blush

it is pretty common judging by all the early high school boys I pass on a daily basis. Today was a ripe old day.

I feel for them wearing blazers all day but they dont take them off to walk home

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 14/05/2018 19:58

Any recommendations for a good soap for BO?

If he wears a blazer check the lining as well as checking shirts. Blazers can get quite whiffy.

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 14/05/2018 20:00

I have huge sympathy for all the teachers and bus drivers and more pleasant smelling teens who have to share space with these smelly boys.

Any soap without moisturizing nonsense will do. Imperial leather or pears.

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 14/05/2018 20:01

The blazer gets washed every weekend. So it was fresh on this morning. Will give it a go with the antibacterial stuff though.

Secondary school teacher here. Yes, they all smell. Some of them 'mask' it with clouds of Lynx.

Agree with all the suggestions here.

Also take off the blazer (and jumper) when you can.

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 14/05/2018 20:01

Thanks donajimena

No jumper, thankfully. I will tell him to air out his shirt on the walk home.

White vinegar and boiling water on the pits of his shirts before a wash will also kill the stinky bacteria (and cheaper than the sports wash stuff).

Poor kid. I'm a sweaty person, it's rubbish. The sure sports 24h deodorant or triple dry work for me.

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 14/05/2018 20:03

Thanks last

Wrights Coal tar soap is always a good shout. It's a natural antibacterial..it can't hurt.

LondonGin · 14/05/2018 20:06

You want antiperspirant- this stops sweat.
Deodorant just tries and masks the smell.
The smell is form bacteria.
Definitely get him to use Mitchum after his shower once his dry. It works much better on clean armpits.

mrsnoon · 14/05/2018 20:07

I'm a bit of a sweaty Betty, I find with Mitchum it works really well but I need to make sure it's properly dry before getting dressed or starting to move around and make myself sweat. I normally dry it with the hairdryer on a cool setting because otherwise it does take quite a while to dry. Also an advocate of washing under the arms with proper soap.

OhDearMavis · 14/05/2018 20:07

Another vote for soap. Shield do an antibacterial soap if you want (it's in sainsburies) but most seem to work nicely.

OhDearMavis · 14/05/2018 20:09

Oh and nesti dante cypress soap smells wonderful and fresh and is probably masculine enough for a teenage boy

mommybear1 · 14/05/2018 20:09

@ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo I remember my younger brother had this at about the same age as your DS - agree with other posters re shirts and Mitchum use we also used Driclor Solution I'm pretty sure this was used at night after a shower and before bed - hope this is solved for your DS
