Daughter at Uni requesting mid term 'care package' What would you put in it?

Disclaimer - she's not really a teen. She's 21, has just finished her degree and started a PGCE, but I didn't really know where else to post it.

So please can you help, my imagination is failing me - what would you put in a mid term 'care package' for your daughter? FI, she won't be able to get home until Christmas (PGCE is very full on).

Also warm tights and socks

RideSallyRide · 26/09/2017 00:53

My mum once sent me a Betty Crocker cake mix with icing. It was filth and nothing she would normally serve but my goodness me did I need it.

Useful things:
Anti bac hand gel
Hand cream
Small packets of tissues
Throat sweets
Halloween dressing up bits?
Haribo
Fancy biscuits
Good coffee
Emery boards
Pretzels
Cosy pillow
Blanket
Hot water bottle
STABILO pens
Slippers
Eyemask
Face packs

If she uses a laundrette then a bag of 20 pence pieces.

whoseafraidofnaomiwolf · 26/09/2017 07:42

Her request was a little tongue-in-cheek, I've chosen to make it a reality. I really wouldn't get too caught up in the terminology. She works hard for no money, and I love and miss her - why wouldn't I send her a nice parcel of goodies?

Ridesallyride - I love Betty Crocker :) All those chemicals smell like 70's nostalgia to me ;)

I think 'care package' is an American term for what is Enid Blyton fans call 'tuck boxes'

BertrandRussell · 26/09/2017 08:41

Don't worry, 'whosafraidofnaimiwolf someone will be along in a minute to say that she is over 14-she should be knitting her own socks. Oh, and that you are being needy by sending her a parcel! Grin My dd is nearly 22 and I love sending her homely things and to remind her that she is loved and thought about. It makes us both happy.

kuniloofdooksa · 26/09/2017 08:49

I haven't read the whole thread but the early suggestions really don't have enough food, wine and chocolate in them. A care package should be mostly edible/drinkable with no more than 20% being other stuff.

Non-perishable wherewithal for at least 3 meals
2 bottles wine
Box fancy chocs and 2 bars simple chocolate

Opheliasgoldenwine · 26/09/2017 10:48

Haven't read all but seen a few and didn't see the mention of sanitary products. They're really useful Smile

FinallyHere · 26/09/2017 12:32

We referred to them as 'red cross food parcels' in the 70's. Motherly love in a box, basically.

Love the idea of Betty Crocker cake mix.

Its not exactly my own taste, but DSS2 still mentions the 1kg bars of Cadbury's Dairy Milk i sent him around exam times, ahhhhh....

AdoraBell · 26/09/2017 12:41

I was going suggest a Costa gift card too.

sashh · 26/09/2017 12:49

As she's doing PGCE I'd put some glittery stars in, maybe some stickers.
cake, chocolate, biscuits.

I have actually sent 'emergency chocolate' www.chocablog.com/reviews/bloomsberry-emergency-chocolate/

Spare tights and leather insoles for when she is teaching.

Maybe an Laser clicker - works like a mouse but from anywhere in the room so you can stand next tot he naughty kid and still flick through presentations.

www.amazon.co.uk/Duronic-SP400-Smart-Pointer-Wireless-Presenter/dp/B003MVN0ZG?tag=mumsnetforum-21

coffee, tea, hot chocolate.

Voucher for a clothes shop, some schools have strict dress codes so she might need to buy a jacket or a longer or shorter skirt.

Candles if she is allowed them, if not you can get artificial ones.

Perfume.

Anything from urban decay.

hand cream and hand sanitiser.

Who does she normally get Chritmas presents for? Could you buy them for her to save the manic dash to the shops in between teaching practice and home - maybe include photos of them, sort of, "got this for aunt Jan from you".

just5morepeas · 26/09/2017 12:51

Nearly everything I was going to suggest has already been mentioned but also, how about a gift card for a restaurant she likes?

That way you know the money's going to go on a nice treat for herself not just disappear into whatever it is students spend their money on. ;)

Leatherboundanddown · 26/09/2017 12:52

If she is doing PGCE then a decent thermal mug that doesn't leak would be great. After extensive research I find the Bodum ones the best. You can often find in tk maxx.

Also a water bottle with a note reminding her to drink water. Teaching is so full on you can neglect yourself.

Practical stuff : cold and flu meds, olbas oil/inhaler, strepsils, hand sanitiser.

Any nice toiletries, I like ones from Lush.

Biscuits/treats/ bottle of wine to share with her housemates.

Rather than buying all this and paying the expensive postage you could do an online order with a supermarket and get free or cheap delivery to her.

Ps please will you also be my mum?

wannabestressfree · 26/09/2017 12:58

I am a cynical old boot and I think its lovely...... am definitely going to do the same for DS.

Orangeplastic · 26/09/2017 13:04

Homemade sea salt fudge or another homemade treat.
A few quid for a few beers
Silly Halloween stuff
Photos of the dog and a personal note from everyone in the family.
Nice olive oil, some Maldon sea salt, jam, coffee

Thingywhatsit · 26/09/2017 13:18

Homemade biscuits 😄

My grandmother used to do this for me and my brother. We'd get sent a small ice cream tub of her yummy biscuits with a note and sometimes £20. Best care package we could have! (well I would have liked one of her apple pies, but that wouldn't have posted well!)

It doesn't have to cost the earth and be all extravagant and materialistic. Simple things in life and all that.....

Got tears welling in my eyes now as it's 10 years since she passed and I still miss her comforting biscuits!

Bblu3Sky · 26/09/2017 13:35

I would not be sending anything heavy, due to cost/breakable

I have sent home made biscuits
Letters, postcards, pictures & homemeade cards
Chocolate
A small momento from home
Something funny to make her laugh

My friend who is a mature student, but living at home is doing similar course
Does she need a "care package too ?"

BertrandRussell · 26/09/2017 13:38

Up to 5kg is 6 quid via Hermes. They'll pick it up for an extra 50p. Bargain.

MagicFajita · 26/09/2017 13:41

A corkcicle travel mug , a paperchase voucher card , some systema tuperware ( the soup mug is my favourite) . Her favourite toiletries and some lovely wine.

specialsubject · 26/09/2017 14:34

If shared house, still no scented candles or sprays. Many people find them disgusting apart from the candle fire risk.
