I've got 2 DSs so not sure what girls do. My boys played a lot of computer games at that age. One is extremely sporty and the other was not remotely sporty. All I know is that you can't force a teenager to do anything they don't want to but if they do have hobbies/interests it makes life a bit easier for everyone (less tantrums etc) and will help the CV for work, college, university etc - as well as making them more interesting people.

pinkbubble · 12/02/2007 21:52

well the trouble is she does want to do something, shes just unsure what she wants to do. To make matters worse is she is very shy and self conscious! bless oh and quite a tom boy!

obviously the other forces do cadets too. Or St Johns ambulance?
DD loves cadets

brimfull · 12/02/2007 22:00

My dd is 15 but at 13 she was still in guides, gave that up at 14.
She plays the flute, swims, does kick boxing lessons and street dance lessons
At school she sings on choir and plays in a few musical groups

But her main hobby is msn and shopping

pinkbubble · 12/02/2007 22:05

Can I be really honest -arent you worried about your DC being on mSN as I continuously worry when shes talking to penpal and keep popping in and out of the study!

Yep. msn and texting her mates is top priority with my dd too who is 15. She loves spending money but is a bit lazy and needs a kick up the arse to get her to actually earn it! Once she gets going she is pretty good though. She usually goes into town with her mates at the weekends, reads a lot and listens to music n her room.

She also goes to a weekly theatre/drama group and loves it so much she wants to be an actress.

brimfull · 12/02/2007 22:06

dd only talks to her school friends on msn.

jampot · 12/02/2007 22:07

MY dd has been doing horseriding since she was 4 - she's 14 in a few weeks. Although she has decided to shelve that particular hobby now for a while. She is planning to take up kickboxing to keep fit and as a form of self defence.

jampot · 12/02/2007 22:08

and of course msn and myspace, shopping and cinema.

nappyaddict · 12/02/2007 23:26

at that age i did singing, drama and dance out of school and any sport that was going at school.

other than that i didnt do a lot else apart from shopping, seeing my mates, texting, talking on the phone, msn and occasionally reading.

nappyaddict · 12/02/2007 23:30

horse riding might be good for someone quite shy.

is she sporty? what about joining a swimming, netball or athletics club?

how about playing an instrument like the clarinet, flute or violin?

pinkbubble · 12/02/2007 23:32

Maybe I will let her go on MSN and talk to friends only- mind you shes on a weeks ban of the computer at the mo. Will have achat with her tomorrow!

pinkbubble · 12/02/2007 23:35

wotzsaname · 12/02/2007 23:36

pink tell me about it. my dd wants to play and i have got libary books and tried the first 3 cords. But I think i need a someone who needs payment to tach her the guitar shes had for nearly 10 months!

pinkbubble · 12/02/2007 23:39

Im such a horrible mother that I wont buy her the guitar until we have music lessons sorted- I cant bear the thought of the off key screeching- (should be grateful its not drums!!)

Is there a music shop anywhere near you, pb? The one in our town has a noticeboard full of cards from music teachers (and people selling instruments etc). DS1 has just started lessons with a bloke he found on the board and he seems like a good teacher.

pinkbubble · 12/02/2007 23:47

Come to think about yes there is, Right im on a mission now, hopefully DD2 will be well enough for me to pop down there tomorrow if not Im sure I can find number in phone book, DD1 was getting rather jealous of how poorly DD2 was so maybe this is away of showing her shes not left out! PS THANK YOU

My 13 year old dsd has just started doing the Duke of Edinburgh award, which seems to be a really great way to get kids doing lots of interesting things. You have to do a variety of activities and she is now doing first aid at St John's Ambulance, ballroom dancing, and guitar. But you have free range in choosing the activities you wnat to do. You also get to go on outdoor expeditions. She seems to be loving it all. I would recommend having a look at the the Duke of Edinburgh award web site for lots of ideas for activities, even if she does not wnat to do the award itself.

He swims for a club and trains for 4 hours a week.

Other than that, being stroppy; treating us to his examples of his Bad Attitude; tormenting his sister and drugging his mind with his Play Station

GameGirly · 07/03/2007 11:27

Very keen on guides, and would spend most of her life playing SIMS on the PC, given half a chance. Loves riding but only allowed every other week 'cos it's expensive. Wants to start latin/ballroom dancing!

Housemum · 07/03/2007 11:44

The 13 year old DD dances (but she has been since she was 4). More practical idea is Scouts but it depends on your area. She won't admit to more than a few people at school that she goes - it's not a "girl thing"! You need to suss out your local packs - she goes to the one that's not nearest our house, but that's because it's the one that's almost half girls.

Apart from that she would spend all her free time between Gameboy/Wii/MSN/texting/listening to her MP3 if I'd let her.

What do your other DDs do that she doesn't fancy? How about going to a gym if your local sports centre has teen classes? Mine did that for a while until she took on more dance classes.
