Another vote here for Duke of Edinburgh Award - I think she needs to be a bit older though. Ds enjoyed archery - lots of girls there too - and that's good for shyness - doing and talking about something specific but not having to talk all the time! got plenty of kudos at school too!

Oh yes, I didn't note the OP's dd's age. You can't complete the D of E bronze award (the first level) until you are 14 and a half, although you can start when you are about 13 and a half. It's still worth looking into for the future though...

Sorry to hijack this

My 13 year old ds's ONLY interest is computers. However he really loves animals, and would like to volunteer for RSPCA etc, but he is too young. Does anyone know anything similar for his age group?

Tigana · 08/03/2007 16:35

When I was that age, my 'hobbies' were sitting in my room listening to music, reading and trying to work out if 'that' boy had looked at me at school or not....oh and going out into town on saturdays with friends...pathetic...but normal (?!)

Tigana · 08/03/2007 16:35

DH at that age was in a band and played guitar and listened to music. Also rode motorbikes.

another vote for DofE here,dd loves it.

Fizzbuzz - are there any animal rescue places near you that might need dog walkers etc? Or a stables that might want helpers for grooming/mucking out? Don't know what the age restrictions might be but particularly if they are a small local concern they might have less strict age guidelines.

(Don't know if thre are any employment laws that would prevent them working - I know kids can have paper rounds at 13)

Just to add that at that age my entire free time was taken up by dancing (ballet and Spanish dance) and drama, and in the holidays I went to a theatre workshop. This was a brilliant way of building confidence in a previously shy girl.

I have DD2 17 and DD3 15 both enjoy drama and go to Drama clases every week. they are both in shows in April. DD3 was in Guides at your daughters age and really enjoyed it.she left last July aged 14.5.
She has recently got interested in playing football and wants to join a club for her age.
They both spend quite a lot of time chatting on MSN.

Dd(13) is in a swim club, trains 4 times a week. Gave up Guides last summer, after going throught the whole rainbows/brownies thing, as nothing happening. Goes to drama, just finished doing a show which had been in rehearsals since September! Reads, ipods, bit of computer- likes isketch, hangs with friends, messes up her room daily. All her friends have different things- one sings, one gymnastics, one dances, one's still looking.

myturn · 09/03/2007 21:59

dd1 and dd2 enjoy horse riding, badminton and drama. And winding me up.

tatt · 10/03/2007 12:11

guides, youth club, swimming, music lesson. Both my children would play computer games all day if I let them. I'd love my daughter to do martial arts training (great for the less confident girl) but its so expensive here and they'd both want to go. In the summer skating/ scooter.

Could your daughter have guitar lessons arranged through school? The school music teacher should know who does tuition locally.

At that age I spent hours off down country lanes on my bike with a feamle friend but can't see anyone letting teenage girls do that now. Another friend had a horse and would sometimes let me try to ride it.

fizzbuzz animal rescue places near you might welcome a helper or a local kennel. Maybe put up a card at the vet offering to dog walk for elderly people?
