My 12 YO DD started secondary school last September, she has ASD and is in a mainstream school with and Autism specific special needs unit, which she has a place in. She does many lessons in the MS part of the school, so is mixing with NT children.

Now my silly question! As the weather is warmer and its not going to be tights weather! what do your daughters wear? she wears a smart uniform (blazer/shirt/tie) I was thinking of just getting her some plain black socks or possibly some frilly black socks, would this be ok?

She wont wear trousers btw, be so much easier if she would!

Black opaques worn all year
(DD 17 )

BaronessEllaSaturday · 11/04/2015 19:31

plain black socks knee high, the school is very strict on uniform and ankle socks are not allowed.

balletgirlmum · 11/04/2015 19:33

Dd has to wear grey tights or grey knee length socks. No ankle socks allowed.

At the school ds will go to it's black or natural opaque tights for girls or black knee length socks.

Bunbaker · 11/04/2015 19:35

At DD's school the girls wear black knee high socks when it is hot. Don't get frilly socks.

We had to wear navy knee length socks

McFarts · 11/04/2015 20:14

Thanks you, DD still want to wear her normal thick winter tights, I will get her some opaques and see how she goes (several pair in her school bag! cos she will no doubt but her finger through them :D ).

Just checked uniform policy and its black ankle or below the knee socks.

I dont really see any of the other children from her school as she travels to and from on SEN transport.

The frilly socks i was on about are the same as the ones you linked NeedAScarf but plain black.

here

Thanks for your help :)

Sorry, I don't understand how the autism determines what she wears...

thetroubleis · 11/04/2015 20:19

You can get 'supercool' rights- not sure how opaque they are.

I bought some for an event last summer and they really were like going bare legged but not. Maybe try those.

Good luck with the minefield that is scho uniform!

McFarts · 11/04/2015 20:22

Because she already stand out because of her disability and I dont want to give any of the other kids more reason to take the piss out her.

Left to her to choose herself she would wear the same thick wool tights all year round as any change makes her anxious. Socially/emotionally she is several years delayed so having a her own taste in fashion isnt something she is interested in at all yet.

My DDs wear black knee high socks if it's too hot for tights, (the knee high tights type ones) but I suspect different schools will have their own fashion in leg coverings.

Twitterqueen · 11/04/2015 20:27

Ah ok, I get it now. Mum of 3 teenagers who wear black tights all the time, every day, unless it's boiling hot, when they wear very tiny trainer socks - ie shorter than ankle socks.

BL00CowWonders · 11/04/2015 20:28

I think if she's happy, then the black opaques will be fine all year round. My dd (year 9) does. Not so many girls beyond year 7 at her school opt for the white ankle socks even though they are on the uniform list as a summer option.

BL00CowWonders · 11/04/2015 20:29

And trainer socks are not allowed at dad's school. Must be ankle.

Flugdrachen · 11/04/2015 20:29

black opaques all year around at dd's school, socks are only worn by year 7s.

Fairylea · 11/04/2015 20:32

I have a 12 year old dd and also a ds aged nearly 3 who is going through assessment for autism (dd doesn't have it but I do understand the anxiety re routine your dd has because ds has that).

Honestly I would just let your dd wear what she wants- the black tights will be fine. It is more important she is happy and comfortable and trust me as the mum of a similar aged dd they are all so body conscious at that age wearing thick tights won't look out of place.

MymumisaG · 11/04/2015 22:26

Black opaques or if a heat wave trainer socks and fake tanned legs - she's 16

Election · 11/04/2015 23:43

Year 9 and small white socks - it longer, tops are folded over.

RandomMess · 11/04/2015 23:46

Frilly socks in vogue here too. Do you know any other parents with dds at the school so you can ask them what is "in"?

ICantFindAFreeNickName · 11/04/2015 23:52

My DD age 12, has said she wants to wear black knee high socks when she goes back after Easter, but they must not be at all frilly or patterned.

ragged · 12/04/2015 18:58

Tan tights (fairly sheer) with skirt & hidden socks.
Mismatched brightly coloured socks if they go bare legged (mismatched is all the rage at DD's school).

Feellikescrooge · 14/04/2015 19:37

Where I work black frilly ankle socks over black opaques seem to be popular for KS3, tights or fake tanned legs for KS4.

Georgethesecond · 14/04/2015 19:40

Can you look at photos on the school website to see what the girls actually wear?
